Hi Cassie, I loved Chog! I just wanted to ask if we would eventually be seeing Tessa talk to James and Lucie about her heritage? James is really struggling with those parts of himself and I think it could help him if her were to actually talk to his mother. Thank you!

That may happen at some point; it’s also very likely (and implied) he’s had these conversations with them before COI begins, in the months between books. Usually, unless these conversations are about something really specific, they sound more interesting in theory than they are on the page. :)

Dru has at least one love interest as the books begin but she’ll add at least one more before they’re over!

Hey Cassie! Do you find that you write the epilogues of your final book in a trilogy before you write the main body of the book? I honestly don’t think I’m ready for the epilogue that wraps up TLH 😭😭

No, actually, I usually hand the books in without epilogues. Only after I do a full edit and rewrite do I write the epilogues, because only then do I know the full and final story.

Charlotte is concerned and does try to intervene in a small way. As a result, Matthew moves out.

He has kept Jem away to cover up his alcoholism, correct — there is one other issue, which gets brought up in COI (it’s related to the shocking thing he says to James. Which makes it sound like maybe he’s into something weird, like Edwardian porn of penguins, so I can say it’s not that.)

Hi! I’m worried about Ty’s mental health, and wondered if you can talk a little about it. You wrote very briefly about his self harm in QOAAD, and while I think it’s a very good thing to talk about because it’s unfortunately something a lot of people who experience trauma go through, but we didn’t get to see any real conclusion to his actions, not by him or any other character. I’m obviously scared for future him but I would also love for you to elaborate a bit about this topic, if you can. Tnx

I don’t think of Ty as having self-harmed.

I have seen people discuss this before, because of the mentions of Ty having bruises, etc. I thought it was clear when Dru went into his room that what was going on was that Ty, while outwardly calm, was smashing up his room — breaking the furniture, kicking the walls — as an expression of his rage and trauma over Livvy’s death.

That is a specific kind of expression of trauma, and not uncommon. It is, however, not self-harm. Self-harm (something I have done myself in the past) is specifically about hurting yourself — punching yourself, cutting yourself, burning yourself. Self-harm is defined as hurting yourself on purpose.

Ty did get hurt, but as a side effect of breaking things in his room — rather like Jace punching a window in COG. I didn’t write a conclusion to Ty self-harming because I didn’t think he did self-harm, and while I can see now how people might have read it that way, it never occurred to me at the time. I thought, “Well, there’s a mystery here about where Ty is getting these bruises, and it will be solved when we find out he busted up his room.”

Taking out rage and anger on your surroundings is a valid and common expression of shock/grief/trauma, just as self-harm is. It is not itself the trauma, it’s the response to trauma. (Just as self-harm isn’t the trauma. It’s the response to trauma.)

Everyone in the books has their own response to trauma — Julian has his, which is pretty intense; Emma has hers, Helen has hers, etc. We’ve seen other characters’ in the past, from Isabelle’s rage to Will’s stark despair.

Jem was not dead, but some bit of Will had gone with him when he’d left, some bit chiseled out of Will’s heart and buried down there among the whispering bones. And Tessa had worried, for that first week just after, that Will would not recover, that he would always be a sort of ghost, wandering about the Institute, not eating, always turning to speak to someone who was not there, the light in his face dying as he remembered and fell silent.

Tessa and friends help Will out of his crushing depression, but I think in Queen itself, Ty’s family isn’t in a place where his response to the loss of his twin seems outsized (most of them don’t know about the necromancy!) nor do they have the distance on it to be able to look at his reactions and determine them to be something they need to intervene in, rather than letting him grieve as he needs — even if that means breaking all his stuff.

I feel complexly about writing this at all. I want readers to have permission to continue to see Ty’s experience in their own — what he was going through was certainly self-destructive, and the self-destructiveness born of trauma is much larger than only self-harm. But at the same time, I worry that people will be looking for Ty self-harming to be addressed in TWP. His grief, his trauma, will be addressed, but not from the perspective of self-harm specifically. Ty has plenty to process and work through even so, and that we will see.

Twenty-nine chapters. It hasn’t been laid out yet, so I don’t know the page count, though it’s 641 in Word.

Hey Cassie! Sending good thoughts and love! I'm currently rereading Queen of Air and Darkness, and I'm wondering, will we get POVs from Cristina Mark and Kieran in TWP? Will we know more about why Cristina is considered to be shadowhunter royalty?

We will certainly see them and learn more about them, but it’s way too early for me to know what POVs will be in TWP! Also I’m holding back on answering POV questions, even about Chain of Iron, because I feel like my feelings about POV are not everyone else’s and I notice that often answering questions about POV leads to fights — it’s really hard to judge what POV in a book means without any context. Like if I had said “We go out of Chain of Gold on Tatiana’s POV” before the book came out, there would have been a lot of reactions assuming that meant she was sympathetic/a main character when she is neither! So I’m holding off.

But we trust your judgement.)

3. Then email a link to that post to

[email protected] before August 7th. We have to be able to click the link and see the image so it must be publicly available. If it is on a private or locked account we can’t see it so we can’t include it as an entry.

The giveaway will end on August 7th, midnight EST. Winners will be contacted shortly after the contest ends and the ARCs will be mailed to them posthaste so they get them before Lost Book of the White is released.

Not Ariadne and Thomas specifically (I think they do speak, but not extensively) but others — Ariadne and Lucie, for instance, and we see sides of relationships we know exist but haven’t gotten real glimpses of yet, like Anna and Thomas.

“Were you ever going to tell me?” James’ voice echoed in his mind. Matthew had woken up in the middle of the night, drenched in sweat, his chest felt like was on fire and every single breath, the flames were scorching and eating him alive from inside out. Like an insatiable fire, it burnt everything and turned them into ashes. No longer colorful. No longer beautiful. The nausea swirled unrestrained in his empty stomach which made him bend doubled when he was reminded of what had happened the day before.

“Were you ever going to tell me?” James demanded, he couldn’t move a muscle in his body, it felt as if he was stuck in quicksand and he was drowning. He didn’t understand why Grace did it—why Matthew did it. He didn’t understand any of it.

Matthew only shook his head, trembling hands trying to open to top of his flask. He swallowed loudly, downing the content in big gulps. “Does it matter?” He sneered,” you wouldn’t have believed me anyway! I kissed her, James, I didn’t want to but I did,” his green eyes glossed.

“I-what do you mean?” James’ mouth went dry, his head was spinning and his vision blurred. James knew what Matthew meant. Grace made Matthew kiss her. James felt like an invisible knife sat precariously on his skin, it was soft enough to not pierce his neck, hard enough to enforce the intended message. The harsh metal should have been cold and raw against his bare skin, but his numb body could not feel anything except for the excruciating pain of betrayal. His throat and heart held in a silver grasp, and all he could do was stare lifelessly at the beautiful eyes that would have held the blade and the terrifying coldness he had never seen before. He was waking up to see the real Grace Blackthorn.

James knew fully well that Matthew wouldn’t lie to him. Matthew was his best friend, his parabatai, his brother. He knew. But he wasn’t ready—he wasn’t ready to see Grace for who she actually was—cruel, cold, manipulative. He wasn’t ready to admit to himself that for years it was neither blind infatuation and nor the love he yearned for. He wasn’t ready to wake up.

“SAY SOMETHING!” Matthew shrieked, he sounded desperate—so desperate. Almost as desperate as James felt to cling on to his Grace— victim, gentle, lovely. He could feel her slowly fading away like a curtain revealing the final show. The real show. The real Grace. He couldn’t breathe then, he felt like he was drowning as the truth slowly sunk in.

“Say something!” Matthew’s voice echoed in his mind.
