Every major (canon / manga) fight of Juvia's, perhaps more than for any other character, follows a theme - making hard choices and the power of feelings. Starting from her very first appearance there's either

some sort of mind / feelings control (either Juvia is affected herself or the enemy has such a power over someone else),

hurting herself or the one she cares about,

Unison Raid or something very close to it (which is also connected to feelings),

or some combination of the three (like in this instance).
