Bringing Down the Walls
"When you hear the sound of the trumpet, then all the people shall shout with a great shout, and the wall of the city will fall down flat." - Joshua 6:5
Sometimes we forget what God can do through those that have faith in Him. He asked Israel to yell at their enemies, and promised that they would have victory through that act.
We all have mighty walls - challenges in our lives - that we pray to see come down. Today, have faith in God's plan, no matter how crazy it seems to you, and trust that He knows what He's doing. He is, after all, the One who brought down the walls, parted the sea, made the sun stand still, healed the sick, raised the dead... and more!
Why can't God bring down the walls today?
End of Summer Thoughts
(This is an article I wrote for our church's newsletter!)
It's hard to believe summer is almost over. It is one of our busiest times in youth ministry, and this year has been great!
At the end of each summer I take some time to look back over the entire ministry year, Fall through Summer, and think about where we've been and where we're headed. This year a few things stand out to me:
GROWTH. Our group has grown so much this year! I don't mean numerically, although we've added quite a few students and are on an "upswing" as far as attendance to our weekly gatherings goes, but spiritually I've seen so much growth this year. It's one of the most rewarding things to see young men and women step up in their own faith and in leadership roles within the group. Youth Sunday a few weeks ago was a great example of seeing our students lead in worship and in sharing their faith, and it's an awesome thing to see God working in their lives!
WORSHIP. I see a growing heart for worship in our young people. They want to sing, and pray, and express themselves creatively in response to who God is, and that's exciting! I will never forget our students on the mission trip this year wanting to sing and worship first thing in the morning (even before breakfast!) and last thing at night before lights-out. Songs like "How He Loves", "Beautiful Things", and "After All" have become anthems which they sing with open and surrendered hearts, and I really can't tell you how moving it is to worship with them on Wednesday nights and other times!
SERVICE. It's been awesome over the last year to see so many of our youth step out and find ways to serve inside and outside the youth ministry and the church. Many have been involved in homeless ministries, local and foreign missions, and service projects through their schools or other community programs. This generation of middle and high schoolers is a cause-oriented generation, and they won't sit back and be a part of something unless they can make a difference through it. It's awesome to see them pair their faith with action - their talk with their walk - and become the hands and feet of Jesus in our community and even to the ends of the earth!
ADULTS. If you don't know it yet, let me tell you - we have some AMAZING adult volunteers working with our students. Our current team of youth workers is the best group I've ever been a part of in over ten years of youth ministry, and it makes a HUGE difference in our ministry and, more importantly, in our students' lives. Being surrounded by adults who love Jesus and love them makes more difference in young people's lives than anything else we do in youth ministry. We are blessed to have a group of committed, caring adults working in youth ministry at FBCCS!
NEED. This past year has truly been a blessing to me, and so many wonderful things have come out of it. But it has also been one of the most challenging times in my entire ministry career. This past year has reminded me how deep the needs in the lives of today's young people are, and how crucial it is that we have a focused, intentional ministry to them. Divorce, family instability, domestic abuse (physical, emotional, psychological), drug and alcohol usage and addictions, unplanned pregnancy, sexual confusion and identity issues, violence, bullying, suicide, eating disorders, access to pornography and other dangerous content via the internet, and more... these are the tip of the massive iceberg of challenges facing today's teenagers. And all of those pale in comparison to the spiritual need in young people's lives - the need for a life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ!
I'm looking back, reflecting on the past year, but I'm also looking forward to what's ahead. I'm excited about the next year in youth ministry. I have many goals, hopes, and dreams for where we're going in 2012-2013, but more than anything else, my prayer is that we continue to chase after Jesus and gain a greater understanding of who He is and a deeper connection to Him through our worship of Him, and that through that we'll see many lives changed.
This is a short film we taped and showed on a youth-led Sunday morning service at FBCCS. I like doing video testimonies rather than live - you can control the time, make sure people have a chance to say what they want to say, and distill everyone's experiences into a compelling piece of media. It worked great!
For all the single ladies... and gentleman!

Confrontation: Still Learning
Earlier this week I had to deal with some issues in our youth ministry which included some of everyone's favorite part of doing YM: confrontation.
Seriously, most people run from confrontation like it's the plague, but I've learned to embrace it because confrontation can be a positive turning point in someone's life and is always an opportunity for me to grow as a leader. I don't LIKE it, but I never run from it.
Here are a few things I learned/remembered this week as I dealt with this particular issue:
1. Be up front. Don't waste their time or yours beating around the bush all day. I have a tendency to try to "warm up" to the issue, but it's usually best to just come out and lay it on the table. In this particular issue, the person across the table from me literally said "just tell me what's wrong". Don't prolong it for you or them - get it out there and start dealing with it.
2. Be on their side. Seriously. If you can't confront someone with love and with a positive end in mind for them (redemption, restoration, growth), you shouldn't be confronting them in the first place. Remind them of this as well - that you are on their side - and that you want to see this issue resolved in a way that everyone learns and grows through it.
3. Don't overlook spiritual needs. Often we deal with confrontation by addressing the specific issue without ever going deeper and seeing what some of the underlying issues are. Ask questions about the person's walk, how their faith-life is doing, etc. Keep an eye open for areas of weakness that you could help in, because I'm convinced that at the core of most issues is our hearts and who or what is at the center of them.
Confrontation. It's not fun, but it can be an amazing opportunity for you and them to learn and grow. What are you learning about dealing with conflict when it arises?
God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen

"Real"
New song...
-------
I fall in love too easily
With all this world offers me
I'm tired of all this make believe
I give myself away
To all the lies that come my way
I'm sick and tired of the fake
Real... I need something real to believe in
I need something real that I can live for
I need something real to love... to love...
I need You...
I need You...
I need You...
I need You...
Jesus, Jesus how I love You
How I've proved You o'er and o'er
Jesus, Jesus precious Jesus
Oh for grace to trust You more
New Song - "Help Me Believe"
Trisha and I were talking about surrender the other day, and she said something along the lines of, "It's hard to know when trying should end and surrender should begin." That set me off on writing this song. I'll post a video soon, I'm loving singing it right now!
-----
It's hard to know where my trying ends
And surrender begins
Cause I find myself lacking trust in You
So I try
To have faith beyond my sight
-----
Help me believe
Help me believe in You
Help me believe
Help me believe in You
-----
It's hard to know where my failure ends
And forgiveness begins
Cause I find myself doubting Your great love
So I try
To have faith beyond my sight
-----
To see through blinded eyes
To love beyond this broken heart
To know without a doubt that You are with me
With me...

Dealing with Criticism: Feel, Felt, Found
Loved this little nugget of wisdom I heard from Kurt Johnston the other day re: dealing with people who come to you with criticism.
He said that he's trained his knee-jerk response to be:
Feel, Felt, and Found.
What that means is he says "I'm sorry you feel that way..." "Others have felt that way too..." "What I've found is..."
That way you acknowledge (and validate) the person's feelings, you help them to realize that they aren't alone in their criticism (a humbling but helpful perspective to have), and then you give a brief explanation of your actions/words/etc.
I love this, and plan on using it in the future!
