Okay but this reminds me of the stories that Mum told me about my Mamgu who grew up on the island of Jersey during world war 2, when it was occupied by Germany. They had severe problems with food imports there, especially towards the end of the war when the axis was driven back from the mainland but still had enough of a hold on the channel islands to mean it was very very difficult to get any sort of food there. Mamgu and her mother were stuck there, with Mamgu’s dad away as part of the british navy and not knowing if they would see each other again.
Mamgu died when I was 7 or 8 or so, so most of what I know is the stories mum told me about her, and most of that was in recent years now that I’m grown up. Mamgu never really talked a lot about the occupation, but when she did it was the hopeful parts- a story about a bag of potatoes bought on the black market that a passing german soldier helped them smuggle into their house, for instance. And Mum passed on some more amusing stories too, such as the time when Mum had a loyalty card for a big supermarket and took Mamgu shopping and Mamgu filled two trolleys full of food (…though it has really good reasoning if you stop to think about it). Mamgu never really talked about the bad parts, the hard parts, except when it was unavoidable- Mum told me about a time that she and Mamgu (or it might have been Mamgu’s mother, I can’t quite remember) visited a museum at the remains of a wartime hospital back on Jersey and that she broke down crying- the photos on the walls were of people she knew, people who had died in the war.
What stories will we share about this current crisis we’re living through, I wonder? The hopeful parts? The funny anecdotes? The pain of loss that we lived through? All three, in different ways? I think all three are important in different ways- to remember that we helped each other, to remember that it was hard, to remember that there were good days and bad days in spite of the entire thing.

Does anybody else get legitimately worried when a fanfic author who was updating regularly just suddenly disappears with no warning? Like, is it a serious case of writers block or are they in a coma? Did they just up and quit? Was it me? Were my reviews not good enough?! Did they die 😳?! Were they kidnapped? Do I need to file a missing persons report? Excuse me officer, there’s been 13 weekly updates and now nothing for months! Find them! What’s their name?! Name!? I don’t know their name but they write 3k+ chapters and I need them safe and back in my life!
Sir, that’s my emotional support fanfic author.
Officer: i’m sorry, but you can’t file this person missing.
Me: you don’t have the facts.
Officer: which are?
Me: i love them.
