I can blab endlessly about how convinced I am that Jen is related to Rian and Deet.

One of the many reasons is the psychical similarities between Jen and Rian.

It’s super hard to get a good reference on Jen’s eye colour, a lot of poorer quality clips and pics from the movie make his eyes look brown when in actuality, Jen’s eyes are blue and brown just like Rian’s.

Beyond that, the biggest differences between Rian and Jen seem to be due to the differences in how the gelflings were made for the movie Vs how they were made for the tv show. For instance, Jen has a longer snout than the aor gelflings. This is primarily because he is the very first gelfing puppet they designed and the Jim Henson company was basically working out how to make a small headed gelfling that could accommodate the puppeteer’s hand.

If course I’m just speculating but I feel like if Jen were designed by the Jim Henson company today he would basically be Rian’s twin.

That being said I also feel like Jen has some of Deet’s features even if they are much less noticeable than Rian’s features.

Jen’s face is a little rounder than Rian’s face and his face shape appears favour Deet’s face shape. Jen’s eyelids also appear to have slight epicanthic folds like Deet.

It also looks like Deet has a slightly longer snout too.

The next thing Jen probably got from Deet is definitely the hair. Jen’s hair might look like Rian’s at a glance but when you compare his hair to Deet you’ll notice that they have the same thin texture where Rian’s hair is very thick. If course Jen also has white/silvery streaks in his hair and Rian doesn’t so it’s not a stretch to assume he got that from Deet too.

Moreover:

Jen bears a fairly strong resemblance to Bobb'n. Baby Jen is were you can really see the grottan features from the round face to the flat cheekbones to the thin silver hair.

Am I over thinking the genetics of a bunch of puppets?

Absolutely. But also consider that if they really are building up to two characters being related to Jen in anyway they’re going to make sure those characters have some physical similarities to Jen. It’s not super unreasonable to think that Rian in particular might be related to Jen because his design seems to have taken quite a bit of inspiration from Jen’s design.

So in anticipation for the 4th and final issue of The Glaive Arc of The Dark Crystal: Graphic Novel, I desided to re-ready the avalaibe 3 issues already out now. And while reading, I found myself real intrigued by this bit of dialogue between Ordon and Fara.

This scene basically boils down to Ordon talking about how diffrent Ordon And Shoni are too each other and how Shoni brings life into his otherwise death-filled life. He comments that he’s given her everything that she’s possibly ever wanted, all except for one thing: Children.

It’s heavily implied in this scene that Shoni and Ordon suffer from some Infertility issues. It’s more heavily imploded to Ordon more then Shoni, as he says he’s the one who haven’t given her everything. And if that’s the case, then that means Rian is basically a miracle baby to Ordon And Shoni.

But this could also hold some very interesting future storytelling storybeats on how they could incorporate Rians little sister and brother into the story. My guess is that it was probably too difficult for Shoni and Ordon to get pregnant again. Not wanting to go through that Emotional roller-coster again, the two come into agreement that Rian could be their first and only biological baby. And that Mythra And Timtree would be their adoptive children.

It would be really cool if it came to fruition. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a main-stream fantasy franchise have a prominent character tackle Infertility before, especially if it’s a male character dealing with it. I’d also bet money that near the end of the issue, Shoni’s going to reveal that she’s pregnant to Ordon, thus giving him a reason to quit the soldier life (at least for a little until he becomes Captain of the guard). If that happens, I will squeal with joy because that would be so damn wholesome.

Dark Crystal seems to have such an interesting story and a strong aesthetic of its own. I haven’t actually seen the films yet but I’m gonna have to

soon now that the Netflix show is out. This piece is for a show that is going on in my local neighborhood comic shop. I may have spoiled myself a smidgen in order to know a little bit about the characters and draw them Deet is just a Darlin, I look forward to seeing and learning more about her in this and other seasons.
