The Darkness - I Believe in a Thing Called Love 2003

"I Believe in a Thing Called Love" is a song by English rockband the Darkness, released as the third single from their debut studio album, Permission to Land. When released as a single in September 2003, it peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart. The song also charted worldwide, becoming a top-10 hit in Ireland, New Zealand, and Sweden, as well as on the US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart.

The single helped the album sell 647,000 copies in the US as of February 2012. The song became the second highest charting single in the US from a UK band in 2003, finishing behind Lostprophets' single "Last Train Home", released in December of that year. The music video for the song was designed to launch the band onto the US market. Directed by Alex Smith, the band are shown on a spaceship, performing, and battling aliens and monsters.

"I Believe in a Thing Called Love" was named the 94th best hard rock song of all time by VH1. In a 2020 poll, Classic Rock readers awarded the song the "Greatest Song of the Century (so far)." It was featured as a playable track on the music video games Karaoke Revolution Volume 2, Guitar Hero On Tour: Decades and Dancing Stage Fusion, as source music in an episode of The Bill, and as part of the soundtracks for the films Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, The Fall Guy, and Novocaine. The song was also featured on the original version of SingStar. It is featured in both Rocksmith and Rock Band 3 as downloadable content. It was featured in a 2012 commercial during Super Bowl XLVI for the Samsung Galaxy Note, which propelled the song to the number one spot on US iTunes rock chart.

Wallace Collection - Daydream 1969

"Daydream" is a song recorded in 1969 by the Belgian band Wallace Collection as the final track on their debut album Laughing Cavalier. It was composed by band members Sylvain Vanholme and Raymond Vincent, with David MacKay who also produced the single. The song is in the symphonic pop/rock genre, and uses strings and flutes. Its melody is borrowed from the Act II finale of Pyotr Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake. It was released as a single in over 20 countries and was a hit in mainland Europe, though its popularity did not extend to English-speaking countries, despite its use of English lyrics.

The song was covered several times, most notably by the Günter Kallmann Choir in 1970; this version was used on a popular easy listening record of the time. As such Kallmann is occasionally mis-credited as the original author of the song. In 2001, English electronic group I Monster had a UK chart hit with "Daydream in Blue", a remix of the Günter Kallmann Choir's version of the song; the track peaked at number 20 in the UK Singles Chart. Günter Kallmann Choir's version was sampled in 2006 by American rapper Lupe Fiasco in "Daydreamin'", featuring soul singer Jill Scott. Fiasco's cover won the Grammy Award for Best Urban/Alternative Performance. The "Daydream" bassline and a similar arrangement were used by Isaac Hayes on "Ike's Rap II", which has in turn been sampled by Portishead, Tricky and Alessia Cara.

The 2009 science fiction drama film Mr. Nobody (starring Jared Leto, Diane Kruger, Rhys Ifans, Toby Regbo, Juno Temple) used "Daydream" several times throughout the movie. In 2016, "Daydream in Blue" by I Monster was featured in the second season of the US television show Mr. Robot starring Rami Malek and Christian Slater. The song was also used in the Marvel series (set in a universe parallel to the X-Men film series) Legion starring Dan Stevens and Aubrey Plaza, in the fourth episode of season three, in 2019. The first season of the psychological thriller series Severance (2022) has also made use of the I Monster version in trailers and during the closing credits of its first season's second episode. The 2005 BBC television series How to be a Gardener written and presented by Alan Titchmarsh used "Daydream in Blue" as part of its extensive soundtrack.

One correction:

The old lady is not in her home. She is at work. She's meant to be what in Italian is called "la portinaia", aka a cross between a doorwoman and cleaner of a residential building. She's in her small "office" space, at the entrance of the building, from where she can survey the coming and goings of the inhabitants. It's a job that has mostly disappeared, but is culturally very clear to us as having the connotation of "potentially gossipy, one-million-percent judgmental woman who sees everything that goes on in the apartment complex, knows everyone and their secrets, and has Strong Opinions™️".

In this case, thankfully, the Strong Opinion™️ is that those two men are ridiculous with their teeny tiny flag for ants.

I would like to add to the description that one of the young women in the photograph (the one on the left) looks very much like the old woman, and she runs her fingertips over the image of the other woman (on the right), so it's implied that this is a photo of her and a partner when they were young.
