Lorna what's happening in your country?? šš
Peaceful protests in many cities across the country against the unlawful arrest of opposition leader Alexei Navalny and against Putinās corrupt regime in general. Navalny was poisoned by guess who, went into coma, was treated in Germany for months, published a detailed investigation of his poisoning, then came back to Russia a few days ago and was arrested at the airport and imprisoned. Soon after that his team published the results of their newest investigation: a long video revealing Putinās secret palace built on stolen money. (the second link is to the youtube video with Eng subs). For the record, I personally donāt consider myself a Navalny supporter, but this is much bigger than him, his treatment is a demonstration of how bad things are over here when it comes to opposition or freedom in general, so this fight needs to be fought regardless of how one feels about him as one person specifically.Ā Ā Police has been arresting people all day, hours before the protests even started, using the usual scare tactics, grabbing and arresting people at random, beating the protesters. Minors are being arrested (for just participating in a PEACEFUL PROTEST). Thereās been a violent crackdown on activists, journalists, and basically anyone who was inviting people to join the protests today.Ā This time the major percentage of protesters are the youth (kids notably used TikTok to organise and prepare) who want to fight for their countryās freedom and their own future, the government has been scrambling to prevent young people from attending by all means. Kids were summoned to school and compulsory school events from home (covid is still a thing) and in some instances were literally locked up by teachers with lock and key. Students of universities were told that anyone attending the protest would be expelled immediately (which is unlawful, but scare tactics + never stopped them before, we were told the same thing back in 2012 when I was a student myself) etc.Ā Thatās the gist of it but itās the tip of the iceberg. can i just add that since there were a lot of arrests today, you can donate to help the cause: https://donate.ovdinfo.org/en#

From JK:
I donāt remember exactly what event brought about this song (I could look it up) but there is/was a real sense that we donāt know what weāre doing here. Ā Weāve been making decisions that can prove to have such dreadful and dire consequences not just in the immediate future, but for generations to come. Ā Itās so easy to be cynical. Ā I spent years and usually half of every day being sick of this and tired of that, feeling like thereās no point to fighting anymore, BUTā¦thatās far too simple. Ā There is reason to carry on and there is reason to fight. Ā Whatever that fight may be, I should think that the future of humanity and the healthy existence of the planet on which we live should be high atop the list of inspiring reasons to get out of bed in the morning. Ā
Thereās a line in this song. Ā "The first chance we get, youāre outā. Ā I guess I have to admit I was wrong here, but letās make it the second chance, yeah? Ā
Disagreements are okay. Ā Debate is good. Ā Authoritarianism and fascism is not. Ā Cheating, voter suppression, dishonourable re-writing of the rules, and constant FUCKING lying is not. Whatās really not good, is violence. Ā Thatās what we have in store for us if we donāt calm down and try and remember that weāre all the same and weāre all in this together. Ā I urge everyone to have a little quiet, take a long hard look, itās us that can keep us here and keep us aliveā¦
ā¦just as itās us that can bring about the opposite.

You Don't Know What You're Doing
You don't know what you're doing Wait whoām I addressing Iām broken But I wonāt go In for a fixing Iāve never seen it this bad All we want is a little love Is that so hard
Iāve never seen so much dread on faces And unwillingness to face the new day Youāre a sex scandal Youāre an earthquake Maybe Iāll just cut my own head off Weāve got our eye on you The first chance we get Youāre out I donāt know what Iāve become Maybe I never was
As your eyes are welling up Take a long hard look Donāt you know Itās us that keep it alive
It hurts way more now Serrated knife You set the sun The world over Are you proud of what youāve done
As your eyes are welling up Thereās so much to be enraged about Donāt you know Letās have some quiet Take a long hard look Donāt you know Itās us that keep it alive
A message from Josh:
This song, like most of the songs on the 1ās record, was written on piano, but I was going to play it more like this on tour. Again, I thought about using the Roland CR-78 that you hear on the record but it seemed more fun to play it like this. This song was born July 4th, 2015, thirty minutes before āFall From Grace.ā Ā Funny how that happens sometimes. I remember going up north with some friends a few days later and playing both of those songs on a beautiful old sun stroked piano. I had called it āSaveā that day but didnāt know how, whom, or what kind of saving was being done. I think in the end it was a combination of saviors and kinds of saving. One place my mind always drifted back to was this little clip from the beautiful movie āReds,ā of Henry Miller sayingā¦
āI think a guy whoās always interested in the condition of the world and changing it, either has no problems of his own, or refuses to face them.ā Ā
I had that as the outgoing message of my voicemail for ages.

āAnd so just thinking of the constant struggle of just trying to play everywhere ā people sometimes closed their doors in our faces, but Iād take that energy, that negative energy that was being thrown at me, and make it into a bullet, a silver bullet that Iād use as a defense mechanism.ā
