2024: Waves On A Shore

I remember Y2K. The excitement, the novelty, of flipping those first two numbers over, entering a new millennium. Now the 2000's are a quarter of the way over. We will survive. We will persevere. They can't take away our hope. There will always be quiet moments, small gestures, little joys. A snuggle with your cat. A day at the museum. An old sitcom. Strawberry candy. Games nights with friends. Comic books and pop songs. A new year is whatever you make of it. What do you want this year to be? What direction are you pointing your toes in? What mentality are you carrying with you? On the coldest days, the sun still shines.

In one hand the past, in the other the future. Shuffle the deck. It took longer than I wished but I've reached the place where I wanted to be for a long time. Married, happy, building a home and a life together. We're in the best place in our relationship that we've ever been and from here the rest will hopefully sort itself out. After years of waiting, my boss finally entered me into the management training course and I finished with flying colors. This time next year I'll be running my own store and theoretically making proper adult money finally in my late thirties, an annual salary instead of an hourly one for the first time. From there, more opportunities. A chance to travel, to leave North America for the first time? A chance to try to make more of my dreams come true? No matter how far I drift, I am always anchored by my past. I don't make five zines per year like I did in my younger days but I sell more than ever when I table at the annual zine fair here every October. I don't fall in love with as many new artists per year as I would like but certain gems still find their way in and I don't give up on the search. In the meantime, I revisit forgotten favorites from days gone by. We've got a long cold stretch ahead of us. Build a fire in your heart.

2022: In A Sunshine State

When the year began, the COVID-19 pandemic had begun to loosen its grip but the future was still cloudy. Would we be able to go places again in the summer? See our friends regularly? By the end of the year it felt largely, finally behind us. I got married this year. We honeymooned in California. I tabled at a zine fair for the first time in years and sold more zines than I had in ten years. I continued to make mixtapes for myself and co-host a weekly professional wrestling podcast with new episodes coming out every week. While Fallen Love might be buried, I still find artistic outlets where I can. No matter how the world changes, for better, for worse, I have my tent poles. Indiepop will always fuel me. Alternative comics. Old cartoon shows. My cats. My wife. A walk in the woods. A trip to the beach. They can't take that away from us. There are small joys all around you if you can find them.

2021: Sincerely Yours

2021 was the first year in our 9+ years of existence that Fallen Love did nothing. We've never been the most prolific of labels, my ambitions greater than the balance of my bank account. 2013 we put out six releases and we never again came close to that figure. In 2016 and 2019 we put out no new releases whatsoever but we did run a show or two and I interviewed some artists for this blog so we still existed in some capacity. But this year seemed to mark a true end. I'm 36, engaged, still just working in retail, and you take stock of your life at certain points. Fallen Love put out some wonderful music that I'm truly proud of. We've also lost $4526.49 to date. And at times I wonder if I wouldn't be happier with $4500 in my bank account and no record label in my memories. Would I make that trade? Honestly? Probably not. I've spent my life investing hours into these highly-personalized little hobbies of mine: booking all-ages concerts, publishing zines, writing children's novels, putting out indiepop compilations. Who cares if I never made any money? Who cares if I lost a small fortune? It wasn't all for nothing. I have the memories and the friendships and some things I can point to and say "I helped create that." "That might not exist without me." Maybe Fallen Love will return decades from now. Maybe I'll have a daughter and she'll start a band and need someone to put out their first EP. Reboots are pretty trendy in pop culture right now. Maybe I won't. Maybe Text Me When You Get Here will be the final thing Fallen Love ever does. If so, that's alright. I'm as proud of that as I am of anything we've done. Regardless of what the future holds, the music remains. Fallen Love will never be spoken of in the same conversations as the fabled pop labels of old that inspired me. But in the same way that Yay! Records out of Oxnard, California and WeePOP! out of England managed to find their way to snowy Canada in 2008 and change my life forever, maybe Fallen Love has done the same for someone somewhere in some little way. A good pop song is boundaryless. Thank you for listening. Take care of yourselves out there. I wouldn't trade any of this for the world.

2021: The Best Of

As the pandemic dragged on, I found myself retreating more than usual into old movies and reliable songs. A touch of comfort through another year of blah. There were only a couple new albums that I played regularly and only a few releases that I really let in. Stand-alone songs from upstart artists were more exciting and perhaps a bright indicator of the next year or two to come. I miss releasing music. I miss making zines. I miss mailing mixtapes to pen pals and falling head over heels with an obscure new twee pop band. The past two years have seen our spirits beaten down and my optimism dashed on the rocks. And winter has just begun. But maybe things will be different next year. Maybe we can feel again.

2020: Six Feet Apart

This year we turned eight years old and put out our first release in over a year and a half. Text Me When You Get Here is a collection of 18 home recordings from the lockdown months of COVID-19. It was our attempt to document what was by far the most surreal spring of our lives.

If Fallen Love never amounts to anything more than an ephemeral whisper, a quiet cloud drifting across your sky every so often, maybe that's alright. Maybe it's enough. Could we be that old friend that you run into on the street, pausing for a moment to share a memory and catch up, going our separate ways again with promises to see each other real soon? Then another three years go by. Dreams are cotton candy stretched thin and spun cyclical. My aspirations at fifteen were different than at twenty and thirty and today. Maybe I still miss you. Maybe I wish we could do more. But maybe I don't get an aching pang of want anymore when I think about what could have been. Goal lines shift and this feels like it could be enough. We promise to stay restless, to roll over every so often, just frequently enough so that the dirt doesn't collect. Let us stay unburied and feel that rain on our faces. Let us lurch into the sunlight when the opportunity arises. And at night we can sleep and on cool days we can blanket ourselves and if all of the magic somehow manages to coalesce again, someday, into something resembling a potion, then we'll drink. And we'll pass the bottle. And tell you how lovely it is to see you again.

2020: The Best Of

Somehow we survived a year unlike any other. We stayed apart. We stayed indoors. We watched from windows as the trees grew buds, then leaves, then shed them. Long walks in the forest the only escape from our isolation. We missed holidays and birthdays and rituals and we'll continue to do so. Some things are more important. Through it all console yourself with the constants. A good book, a warm meal, a purring cat, and a new record.

7/6/2020 - self-isolation

Dear Betty, Some days it felt like I only existed in the letters I mailed to you, my spirit only evident in the pregnant pause between mixtape tracks. In my youth I spent so many years on my own. Loneliness consumed me like wheat into a thresher. I would fill the days by researching obscure twee labels, watching old sitcoms, or burying myself in graphic novels. Reveling in the stories of other lost and lonely characters gave me a thin sense of solace. It was a decade plus of self-isolation. A pandemic of heartache. While others cloistered I spent this spring riding empty buses and subways to my day job. My co-workers and I donned our masks and sanitized the checkout counters and shopping baskets every three hours. I turned away customers hoping naïvely that we might have finally received rubbing alcohol or thermometers, informing them that we hadn't seen any in months and that I wasn't optimistic anymore. Every afternoon I returned home overworked and exhausted, wondering if I had been secretly contaminated by one of them, if I was harboring something dark inside of me that might not show itself for days. Life in a horror movie. It took a lockdown to fan the embers of this little label back into something half resembling a flame. I thought the magic had waned. I feared that the realities of adulthood had grown too burdensome to bear. How much of yourself can you pour into something if the passion only drains out the other end and dissipates in the mud? I'm not a strong man. My heart is made of balsa wood and held together with string and tape. It was a different kind of loneliness that cloaked itself around my shoulders this spring. Because I knew that I wasn't alone. It was your mail that kept me aloft through my younger days but I had new letters now. From Vancouver to Charleston, Tokyo to Berlin, they arrived in my mailbox and drew the corners of the globe a little tighter, near enough that I could almost see their faces. The doors have since opened but the masks remain on. An invisible danger yet persists. The future is oblique but our friendships prop us up, unsteady though our legs may be. 2019: Treading Water

2019 was the quietest of the seven years in Fallen Love's existence. We ended 2018 with what remains our most recent release, FAL015, and ran one live event in February. That was it.

I'm still passionate about indiepop. Yesterday I posted a long list of releases that I loved this year. Just in this last month I discovered great new pop bands, active in my own hometown, like Ducks Unlimited and Tea Room. It almost makes me want to book shows again. And I'd almost consider it, if it weren't so hard. It's hard to run live gigs in a big city. To find venues that will give you a space, a date other than a Monday or Tuesday night, to find people who will come out to support when there is so much competition for their time and money. Running shows was something that I loved at one point but it was a different city in a different time. I don't have that community anymore and my interests shifted. I would love for Fallen Love to be more. We said for years that our goal was to be the best indiepop label in Canada. I want to be Fortuna Pop. I want to be Shelflife. I started this thing because of labels like Yay Records, WeePop!, Happy Happy Birthday To Me, Magic Marker, Elefant, Labrador, Cloudberry, Matinée, etc. I stand in admiration and awe at their bodies of work. I strive to reach that. I think the closest we've come is Secret Gardens. But it's hard. How do you run a record label in the era of streaming? There's no money in Spotify or YouTube. The number of people who purchase physical media gets smaller with every passing year. But I love my trinkets. As a fan I want the CD's and cassettes and vinyl. I want to read those liner notes and look at them on my shelf. But everything costs money. The hardware, the mixing, the mastering, the artwork. How do you pay for it? I don't know. I have a Word document on my computer with a list of bands I would love to work with. An album or an EP or just one song on a compilation. It grows every week, 102 names as of this morning. But a year passes by and we do nothing. I work at a dayjob and the money goes to rent and food and a bus pass and my cats. If there's anything left over it gets sprinkled onto the mountain of debt. So I say, "maybe in a couple months." Maybe in the spring I can think about a new compilation tape. Autumn songs? Maybe by summer I can email that band I love and see if they'd like to do something together. Maybe next fall we'll have time to begin work again on that fanzine we started ten months ago that kept getting pushed back and back until it disappeared under a desktop of "responsibilities." Fallen Love is not dead because we still want to exist. The passion and the hope and the visions of what could be remain within us. That's not gone yet. So maybe in 2020 something will happen. Maybe we'll find a solution. Maybe we'll unearth a key. Maybe a couple of our dreams will get to become reality again. It's hard to say.

2019: The Best Of

A decade ends. So much changes in a decade. So much can change in a year. Try to let go of all the hard thoughts, the bad moments. Think of all the good things. Look how we've grown. Look how far we've come. A new year is percolating on the stove of the universe. Listen for the whistle. Don't forget to blow on it before you take your first sip. It will be worth the wait.

9 Questions With... Baby Band

Hi lovers! Here at Fallen Love headquarters we periodically interview people that we adore in order to shine a spotlight on our wonderful pop planet. We post all those interviews right here for your education and enjoyment.

Baby Band are a sad pop band from Toronto, Ontario Canada playing their second gig ever as part of our next Fallen Live show on February 21. They are Melanie Sarazin (guitar & vocals), Shannon Sandwell (guitar), Madison Rae Stoner (bass & vocals), and Becca Howes (drums & vocals). Harley spoke to Madison and Becca. Fallen Love Records: Why did you decide to start a band? Becca: I had been wanting to learn drums for a while so, when my old band broke up, I took that chance to start taking lessons. I told Madison about it and she decided to start taking bass lessons so we could play together. I also knew that after Camp Girls broke up I still wanted to continue to play music with Mel at some point and they were also teaching themselves guitar so we decided that it would be fun and beneficial to start a band where we were all learning together! I found Shannon through a post on Instagram saying she wanted to jam with other queers so I reached out and here we are!! FLR: You've played one show so far! I assume it went great. What was the biggest takeaway? Madison: So fun! It was my first show ever ever so I learned that I love to perform and that having friends in the crowd is super sweet and helpful. B: I was so nervous and thought I was gunna puke during the second last song but it was so much fun. Mel said afterwards that it was the best first show they had ever played and I think I would agree with that! There were just SO MANY pals there. It was such a sweet and wholesome and fun night!! FLR: If you were given a blank check to book your own music festival this summer, who would you try to get on that lineup? B: I guess I am speaking for just myself here but I would get bands like Swearin', Remember Sports, Charly Bliss, etc. But also would book my friends' bands (like PONY, Triples, Feels Fine, etc.) and pay them a ton of money because I love them all so much. FLR: Where is your favorite place in Toronto? M: Bit of a stock answer but I love Trinity Bellwoods when I'm feeling social. It's nice to run into friends and maybe get to introduce friends to each other, pass by people you know, never feel lonely, sit in the sun. B: Hmm... Yeah, I also love summer park hangs with friends, whether it's Bellwoods or Christie Pits or Duff Grove or whatever. Wherever I can sit in the sun and smoke and drink and laugh with my pals. FLR: What toppings do you get on your pizza? M: Vegan cheese, mushrooms, tomatoes, green peppers, black olives. B: I am a classic pep-pep 'n' cheese kinda person. Maybe some bacon if I'm feeling ~fancy~ FLR: We've still got over two months until it finally starts to feel like spring here. What advice do you give for surviving the winter? M: Reading a book in Allan Gardens is a lovely escape, and watching the turtles climb on each other. B: Use your SAD lamp for your plants so they don't die (and I guess use it for yourself too). hahaha FLR: What are your favorite baby-themed TV shows and movies? I was a big fan of Rugrats and obviously Muppet Babies is classic but the movie Baby Geniuses was one of the worst I've ever seen, even with Christopher Lloyd. B: Was definitely a Rugrats fan but I was way more into movies/shows where the main characters were dogs. FLR: What's the best birthday you've ever had? B: Honestly none really come to mind! Definitely not the one that I spent in the hospital. lmao Birthdays always end up to be a little disappointing to me, to be honest. FLR: And why should people come to our show on February 21? New Sky are Nik, Tom, and Yoshi from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. They will be performing as part of Fallen Live: Pisces Rising on February 21. Harley asked the band some questions in preparation. Fallen Love Records: How did you all meet? Yoshi and Tom met in the summer of 2014 serendipitously at the Black Cat gallery in Toronto. Yoshi and Tom met Nik in March of 2016 serendipitously in Kingston, Ontario at a show. FLR: They say the best bands are born out of friendships. What are some things you have in common? We're all the exact same height and have dyed hair. FLR: Who's someone famous you share a birthday with? Yoshi: I was born in April. Not same date but I always remember my childhood friend Manabu and my university teacher, artist Eiji Watanabe, who were also born in April. Tom: I think I have the same birthday as Theodor Herzl. Nik: No idea but I think M. Night Shyamalan is a leo. FLR: If New Sky could share a bill with any active musical act, who would it be? Yo La Tengo, Sloan, or Baby Cages. FLR: What's the most rewarding thing about being in a band? Feeling grooves. Feels good to play songs with your friends. FLR: Did you make any new year resolutions? To make more music and hopefully record something at some point this year. FLR: What were you thinking of when you wrote your last song? T: Organs are expensive. N: Like to hit drum. Feels good to hit drum. Y: Person whose name starts with E. FLR: And why should people come to our show on February 21? Experiencing music is good for you, even if you don't like it, but we are pretty sure you will like it. We really like it.

10 Questions With... Laughed The Boy

Laughed The Boy are a folk-rock band from Toronto, Ontario Canada comprising Chris Panacci, Sean Panacci, and Brennan Hrehoruk. They will be headlining our next Fallen Live show on February 21. Harley interviewed Chris ahead of the show. Fallen Love Records: It's been over three and a half years since you participated in the O Nostalgia! split EP with us. How has Laughed The Boy changed since then? To say it's changed a lot would be a bit of an understatement. Taylor had to leave the project in 2015 so everything was on hold for over a year. Sean and I eventually started recording again and, when we had to start playing live, we didn't want to play acoustically so we added Brennan on bass so we could play live as a trio. Since then we've done an album, an EP, and two singles with another album on the way. FLR: You and Sean were both playing in a band called Busker Bros when we first met. How did BB and LTB differ and why did one drop off while the other kept going? Laughed The Boy songs are primarily written by me whereas Busker Bros. songs were a collaborative effort with Dan and Sean. A lot of the writing was done jamming as a band. Because Busker Bros. was more collaborative it was tougher to keep going as we got older and more busy with other things. The whole songwriting process in Laughed The Boy is more streamlined so it keeps it simple in that we don't all need to be together all the time for things to keep going. FLR: If you could time travel to any year and just hang out for a couple months, which year would it be? Hmm. Probably 1999 so I could show off my Crazy Bones and Pokémon card collections again. FLR: What have you eaten today? A banana, a bagel, and some beef stew from yesterday. FLR: Word is you've been working on a new album for a while and it should be out soon. What can you tell us about it? We went in a few different directions with it that we haven't really done before. I forced myself to try new things. I recorded myself playing piano for the first time. We also had violin recorded for a couple songs, which I'm really excited about. Generally we took our time with it. Here Is Fine was recorded over three days whereas this was recorded periodically over a few months.

FLR: Where is your favorite place in Toronto? Hanlan's Point on Toronto Island. It's nice to get away from the city while still kinda being in the city. I love hanging out with friends there in the summer or even going by myself occasionally to do some reading/writing/play my Game Boy or whatever. FLR: What's your star sign? I'm a Libra. Everything in moderation. FLR: When you were a kid, what was one thing that made you laugh the hardest? Jim Carrey movies. FLR: What video games have you been playing lately? I bought a Switch back in November so I bought Super Mario Odyssey and got Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for Christmas. I still constantly fire up the Wii U to continue playing The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, though. FLR: And why should people come to our show on February 21? Well, even if we weren't playing it I'd be going to see New Sky and Baby Band because they're awesome. This will be our first show of the new year so we finally get to play some songs off the new album live!
