Martha, Mary, and Lazarus

Martha, Mary, and Lazarus were siblings who lived in Bethany and were friends and disciples of Jesus. According to Luke, Martha played hostess when Jesus came to visit (Luke 10:38-42), while Mary (not to be confused with Mary Magdalene or the other Mary's in the Gospels) "played the better part" of listening to Jesus. Mary is also identified as the woman who anointed Jesus' feet and dried them with her hair (John 11:2). Their brother suddenly died. Lazarus was buried for four days before Jesus raised him from the dead, though the rest of the bible does not expound on Lazarus' life after this miracle.

Outside the bible there is not much known about these siblings. According to legend, Martha traveled to Tarascon, France, where a monster was a threat to the population. She sprinkled the beast with holy water, placed her sash around its neck, and tamed it. Her relics allegedly still reside there. Mary may have traveled to Ephesus with St. John and spent the rest of her days there or she went to France with Lazarus and Martha. Lazarus is said to become a missionary to Gaul (Latin name for France) and became the first bishop of Marseilles. He was beheaded during the persecutions of Emperor Domitian

Martha is the patron saint of butlers, cooks, dietitians, domestic servants, homemakers, housewives, hotels, innkeepers, laundry workers, servants, servers, single laywomen, travelers; Marseilles, France; Villajoyosa, Spain; Congregation of Martha and Mary.

Mary of Bethany is the patron saint of penitent women, single laywomen, converts, students, for those seeking spiritual guidance, deep understanding of Jesus' teachings.

Lazarus is the patron saint of grave diggers, homemakers; Cyprus, Aix-en-Provence, France and Marseilles, France.

Notes: In Luke 10:40-41, Martha asks Jesus to scold her sister, Mary, for not helping with meal preparations. Jesus gently rebukes Martha, stating she is anxious about many things, while Mary has chosen the "good portion"—prioritizing spiritual intimacy with Him over cultural hosting duties.
