i saw this and thought "NOOO" so i brought her future girlfriend (tamarack) over to maybe comfort her and tamarack ended up telling renee a story about how tamarack once failed at something and renee was all "WOAH YOURE SO COOOLLL" and now she's happy and vibes with tammy and now TAMARACK wants to be friends you MUST KNOW IM GIGIGLING OVER TAMAREN YURI

Elise being Elise and still in denial of her feelings… like girl everyone except you knows atp you don’t even like anyone else in the town romantically you’re just hopelessly in love with and yearning for your neighbours
Fresh-faced and unfamiliar to the world of Golden Grove, Elise Second is thrown in for a loop. Who thought a small town like this could be this... jarring? Certainly not Elise. Well, it doesn't seem all that bad.
Sure, maybe the entirety of the town is surrounded by icky towering trees and bark, and maybe the buildings itself seem to look like something out of the 1930s. But hey! With her two neighbors in her sight and future, the world can only seem so boring for long.
Elise uses her roller-skates to travel around town. She likes the feeling of the wind blowing against her face, while enjoying the concept of not having to carry a big mini-sized vehicle around. Don't worry! She has good balance... although that gets circumvented by her consistent urge for adventure and recklessness.
PIANO!!! Elise loooovess classical music. Although it's only in the beginning of Step One she formally starts piano lessons, she had a retired music teacher for a neighbor back at her old home, that watched over her when her mama was at work. Elise might have gotten her music taste from the records playing in her recorder, picked up a thing or two from her neighbor and the giant grand piano sitting in her living room.
The nickname 'Eli' was something Elise chose for herself when she moved to Golden Grove. She liked how it sounded, what it implied. (Only friends use her nickname, not everyone does.)
Elise has a very prevalent liking for sparkly, shimmery or shiny things. Like jewelry or stained glass windows. Like she will be mesmerized if she sees something sparkling through a shop window and just stare at it for a good long while before her mama pulls her away. (Extra fact: Elise finds Tamarack's hair and Qiu's eyes VERY sparkly... hmmmm...)
If not evident from her introduction, Elise doesn't like the town OR the forest. Elise finds the town too busy, too empty and too... nothing all at the same time. The forest is icky, dark and way too... whatever. Opal often pokes fun at the fact Elise doesn't ever seem to like anything unfamiliar. (Something she unfortunately cannot deny.)
Elise doesn't like the idea of change. It's scary, unpredictable, and better left off unexplored. Who cares if there's treasure there? She wants out! ...but... if Tamarack wants to go explore... then she supposes it's okay if they explore... for a LITTLE bit. (They proceeded to wander in the forest for 3 hours)
In narration, Elise is often described as a wolf or a unicorn. Occasionally a dragon. No matter how mesmerizing its' dance across the meadow, no matter how glittering the homeland of its jewels are, you very seldom forget the dangers and thrill of treading too near the territory of something so unfamiliar, something you can only watch from afar in admiration and curiosity.
Elise has a habit for fiddling with her hair when she's nervous. Playing with her jacket strings, rubbing her shoulder. She's very good at pretending she's not afraid nor scared. But once you figure out these small habits, you'll notice it actually happens very rarely. (However, she does seem to do this a lot around Qiu and Tamarack, hmm...)
"Oh, Qiu and Tamarack? They're... they're really nice. Very friendly. Very warm. Very autumn. Very pretty! Very smart. They're people I wanna spend the rest of my life with. They're really good friends." Elise was her own historian (I'm crying).
Elise has a very good relationship with her mama Opal! She interchanges from using mama, to mom, to mother depending on the situation (e.g.: mother is used when Elise is talking about her to someone else). Elise is very supportive of her mama, and would do anything to make her mama proud of her. (The moment that crying Opal image comes up Elise is gonna start wailing and bursting into tears and forgetting everything she was mad at Opal prior to this; WE LOVE OPAL SHE'S OUR QUEEEN!!!)
Elise likes watching Disney Movies on rainy days with lots of buttery popcorn. (She doesn't even like popcorn, it just tastes better when watching movies)
Elise likes wearing shorts/pants more than skirts. She just wanted to make a good impression on her first day of school/in Golden Grove. (The second image/headshot of Elise in my illustration is closer to what she would wear. You can tell it's quite similar to Tam's outfit in Step One!! :D)
When Elise is in GG a bit longer (and generally more comfortable around the town), she would def start purposely matching with Tammy and Qiu in the future seasons!!! Like similar overalls, t-shirts, colors etc. (She'd def go out of her way to very subtly hint/ask/cue in Tam and Qiu on what they're wearing the next day lmao)
By the way, this girl is NOT slick at all. Qiu finds out within a week of Elise doing this, Tamarack finds out within a week and a day. Although I imagine the both of them are quite happy to let Elise match with them. (There was definitely one picture day where all of them just straight up wore all yellow with washed out jeans and star clips. Mrs. Murray was crying/laughing the entire time the cul-de-sac kids are not even trying to hide their bias for each other at all).
People would risk everything for a little bit of something beautiful.

This fic will be written with my MC Elise "Eli" Second in Step 2, who uses She/Her (and is in severe denial about the fact "she" doesn't like it.). This takes place after the Step 2 Prologue, prior to any Moments.

She wasn't sure when exactly it happened, the pinpoint where her years met and collide, and suddenly she was no longer who she always thought she was. Or at least, the world said she wasn't. Not anymore. That moment frozen in time, when she blew out thin pink and white candles, stuck right beside the waxy number of twelve. The fine line where cheery childhood met daunting adolescence. Where in a single second, the world broke her apart from that safe comforting field; where in a day, the world no longer saw her as a child, willful and shy, unaware of the dangers of the world.
Elise saw herself every day, her mirror always looming in the corner of her room. It was full-length, tall as opposed to long. There was no hiding away when she looked at it, she saw herself, unfiltered and unprepped, bare-faced, everyday in that mirror. When she woke up and got ready for school, when she was going out that day and needed to make sure she clipped her hair up properly, when she felt the urge to make sure she looked perfect. Pristine. It was a unsworn duty, something she had to indulge in, a culture she was obligated to perform. A promise packaged in the most beautiful silver wrapping paper that caught the moonlight, placed on shoulders that once only knew how to carry a green striped backpack.
Lots of girls said, Elise had a much easier time getting ready than them. Lucky her. Unlucky for them, she laughed. She frowned as her reflection stared back, as she pushed back skin with her palms, trying different angles at the mirror, her nightgown strap loose off her shoulder. She picked at a spot at the side of her cheek. Her shiny blonde hair flowed down free on her back, tussled and reaching her waist. She analyzed the sight. Eyelashes slightly curled, cheeks flushed from burying her face too deeply in blankets and comforters, eyes blue and melancholy. Lips slightly chapped. Always effortlessly glamorous. That was the image she was supposed to project, right? Always beautiful, always something worth worshipping. Always something ethereal, never something real.
Something that could be mythicized to hell and back, consumed in tiny bits and pieces. Broken into body part after body part. A sparkle in her right eye, the mole under it.
The only thing that disturbed that sight, that vision of blonde waves, was the unappealing scar spreading from her hairline across the left side of her face, red and blotchy. It infected her skin like a parasite, threatening to spread across, but it never did. But it didn't matter. It was the only thing that people could see if she pinned her hair up, if she didn't make effort to hide it, if she didn't try to cover it up, she knew it would be the only thing that mattered about her. What would define her appearance.
She could always feel their eyes never meeting hers, shifting to the right. Always the damn right. They could pretend as much as they wanted, they could say whatever to make the wound soften, but she saw the crease of an eyebrow, a frown. The sheer delight and admiration in their eyes dimming, turning mocking, or worse, indifferent.
It didn't matter prior to then, how enchanting, how breathtaking, how charming everyone said she was. How her hair caught the sunlight. How her dimples showed when she smiled. How her eyes creased when she strained to see the whiteboard. How she laughed so feverishly, so crazed, when it was genuine. How her fingers, calloused and cramped, danced across ivory keys in a show of flair, pretending they had not played this song, these notes a thousand times, so much to a point of hatred. The moment the illusion cracked, it was the only thing they would ever see. She wondered blatantly, as boldly as she dared, would they still find her charming, breathtaking, someone something worth paying attention to if she stopped tending to that false image?
Truthfully, it was the only thing Elise could ever see when she saw the mirror. It filled her brain like fog, left her thrashing about, desperate for dry land. The privileges she had now, all these compliments, her talent, all this power as a fourteen year old, was temporary. She would sooner or later expire out of date, like every other would and would no longer be deemed special. She would become like all those girls in her school, her neighborhood. Ordinary and forgettable. Faceless entities that she could not name after all this time. Yet, she didn't find it as terrifying as she said she did. It didn't sound so bad, to be like the others, to be simple-minded. To be the truest form of yourself, not some entity existing on another plane of existence, too far to reach, to only admire. She just didn't want to be that specifically. That- thing, she couldn't find the courage to admit to her most terrifying observer- herself. She didn't really want to be like all the girls in her town. They were lovely, thoughtful and indeed brazen, but that wasn't really what the reason was. The reason being...
She let go of her face, walking a step or two from the mirror. She turned and twisted that body, a frown digging deeper than her face, into her heart and mind. Her hands placed themselves on her chest. It felt wrong, somehow. Something she couldn't name. Everyone at school didn't need words to say she(?) looked... ideal. Their gaze lingered long enough to let her know.
The gaze of boys, sweaty with hormones and something darker she was not willing to entertain. There was almost something familiar about the others though, something familiar and something recognizing Elise. But it faded as quickly as it came. The onlook of girls, basic by nature and pathetic. Ordinary with converse and teased hair. That's what they were supposed to be, but when Elise saw them pass by, a laugh, the curve of their cheek, the way they had no regard over shared lunches and lives, the way they huddled against one another, so intimate yet so mundane, she only viewed a spectrum of something foreign. Something she craved for, yearned for but had no right to.
Special. Ideal. She let the word sink on her tongue, testing it. She was not certain if she liked that word. She was not certain if she liked what it implied, what it said about them. Did everyone else's ideal version of Elise Second look so much different than hers?
Her face was just a face. After years and years of looking at the same expression, the same tired eyes everyday, there was nothing so shocking, so jarring about it. She had a pair of eyes, a nose, a mouth- what could go amiss about it? Apparently, everything. Looking nice and presentable went beyond clothing, it went beyond physical features. It was in how willing you were to conform, how willing you were to bend over to let everyone else walk over you. If you were soft, malleable and thoughtless, you were the best kind. But don't let that sink in, because there would be dozens of thousands of millions of others just like you. It was all wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong and yet it still haunted the echoes of the hallways.
Elise stared, but as it had been for so many days before that she stopped counting, she remembered the words of her next-door neighbor: Qiu Lin. It came back to haunt her, again. Qiu was a blatant idiot, careless in their life and seemingly able to get the things Elise worked so hard, so desperately for. Their life, in theory, was perfect. So perfect it could be framed on a wall. But they never seemed happy. Never truly happy. If Elise was more honest with her feelings, she would say it tugged at her heartstrings. But Qiu was smart, they knew how to trick others. How to convince others of any given truth they wanted. But that logic didn't sit right in her stomach. No matter how much of a mantra Elise had committed to tell herself, it never sunk in. It never clung to her brain like a truth, shape more akin to a excuse. The way Qiu's eyes curved slightly when they teased, notes scattered across the forest floor like a swan song, a graceful arc of their arm, kept interfering with her thoughts.
"I don't want to be anyone. ... How do people figure this out?"
Elise didn't know how, and thought she didn't need to know how. But wondering could only do so much harm, right? She turned and stared out the window right next to her bed. She could see the skyline of blue, dull in autumn, right back at her. A sheet of ivory spread across the blue bedspread, covering it like icing on a blue-lemon cake.
If she was brave, if she was more courageous than she was, someone who loved herself a little more, she would have wondered, if that 'something wrong about her', was something painfully familiar to them. Something familiar she saw in Qiu about herself, and that was why she denied their presence so fervently. That was why they were too dangerous to linger around, because what if indeed, it was true?
Elise looked out the window, towards a blue sky, filled with clouds and light, and turned away. Her gaze floated back into her room, back into the deliriously warm shades of browns and reds. Back to a mirror hung by pearls and ornate decor picked off a thrift store. Slightly chipped at one edge. Through the mirror she saw, a glare of red.
