every once in awhile people will say "[my name], you have good taste in screen-based narrative stuff, what would you say is your favourite tv show" and i'll go "well first of all i don't have one of those because it's all dependent on what one is feeling like at a given time, but i sense that you're really asking what i like that's really really good" and they will say "yes you're right about that i would like advice on something to watch that's really really good" and i'll say "have you ever heard of the show black sails?" and they'll answer "oh isn't that the show about macho pirates that's like game of thrones i think i watched the first episode of that or something" and i will nod patiently and then reply that "it's actually possibly one of the most rewarding pieces of tv i've ever seen, it simply asks you to trust it and i know that's difficult in the climate of everything either goes on forever without a plan or else gets cancelled after two seasons but this one does neither of those, it's incredibly beautiful, and it's very politically cognisant as well" and i will get a blink and a "oh, well, im glad you like it" and i will wonder why i was being asked for recommendations in the first place
similarly to how you should never trust gamers with a nonbinary character i feel like you can also never trust a fandom with an aroace character. whether it's explicitly canon or implied it just ends up the same
every time an allo person wants to ship an aroace spec coded character they should write an essay with MLA format citations on how this serves the themes of the story and is necessary for the character and how their ship is any different than the relationships said character already has and they should also send $500 dollars minimum to at least one aroace person in their fandom
"but people can do whatever they want!!!" i don't caaaaaare go examine your biases and cry about it or i'm blowing both of us up
never related to authors being like "childhood is such a blessed innocent time", catch me with that jane eyre shit like "such dread as children only can feel" and "I then sat with my doll on my knee til the fire got low, glancing round occasionally to make sure nothing worse than myself haunted the shadowy room"
"Adults can change their circumstances; children cannot. Children are powerless, and in difficult situations they are the victims of every sorrow and mischance and rage around them, for children feel all of these things but without any of the ability that adults have to change them. Whatever can take a child beyond such circumstances, therefore, is an alleviation and a blessing."
I find this passage from the Mary Oliver essay "Staying Alive" very poignant and true.
So I thought y'all would like this too This great white comes to the jersey shore every year and this year they named her and have been tracking her hella so this is Mary Lee and she decided to show herself under this rainbow for pride month A true gay icon
#This is the representation Iāve been looking for
THE UNTAMED | episode 22
never let the fact that you were born a girl stop you from being the gayest man alive
Happy pride to those 5 seconds where Charlie Swan thought Jacob was coming out to him in the most insane way possible
"thanks mum"
it mustāve been so embarrassing for everyone on game of thrones when they fumbled the ending so bad after black sails managed to achieve everything they were trying for two years earlier with a much smaller budget. like well lit fight scenes, intricate politics, morally gray characters with shifting alliances, sea battles, epic stories told on a focused character level, waxing poetic on the nature of stories and storytelling and the way they shape reality⦠like damn yāall really are just out there reheating jonathan steinberg and robert levineās nachos
maybe i was made for loving things. maybe that's what life is all about.
This is how June is going to feel
there's not a single casual bone in my body. everything means something to me
james flint's most endearing trait is that he understands women to be inherently three-dimensional, complex and deserving of respect (especially for the positions of authority they occupy). in contrast, he is barely convinced that most men have brains.
flintmiranda - staying still (noah kahan)
in Finland, it is illegal to kill a bear when itās hibernating. If you ask a hunter why that is, a number of them will tell you itās wrong simply because it is the law, and they donāt make a distinction between what is right, and what is legal. Most people like that are perfectly normal, decent and respectable people, just like the rest of us.
Ā But if you ask people who think about things, the answer is vague. Killing a hibernating bear would just feel⦠impolite? You canāt fucking shoot a man when heās sleeping, thatās just fucking rude. Itās just not the right thing to do.
Ā Long before hunting laws were established in Finland, you couldnāt kill a sleeping bear, and what commands you is something older than law: tradition. Even at a time when hunting was a matter of life and death, and a bear fighting for its life is mainly a matter of death, you just didnāt kill a hibernating bear, you have to wake it up first. Hunters risked their lives, the lives of their brothers and everyone in the hunting party, who were friends, family and men that they loved, to give the bear a fighting chance.
Ā In the modern time, the hunting season of bears is in the summer, for the warmest summer months. There are many reasons for why they are allowed to tread safely in autumn and to sleep in peace through the cold months, almost all of which are rational and scientific, and do not touch the old traditions.
Ā Old faith says a living thing has many souls - henki, luonto, itse. Plants only have one - the one that wills them to grow. Animals have two, both the spark of life and nature that enables them to act. A human being also has the third, one that makes them a person, personality, itse, literally āselfā. But the soul that travels in your dreams is not the soul that defines a human - animals have that one as well. When your dog runs in her sleep, her soul is elsewhere, where a dog is needed.
Ā Oneās waking soul is elsewhere when they sleep and dream. A bearās soul is somewhere else when they are hibernating - there are two words for āhibernationā in finnish, one of which is talviuni, āwinter sleepā, and that is the one that bears have - and if you kill a sleeping bear, their soul is not in the body, it is still out there, and it can find you, and as a revenge for killing its body, Ghost Bear will kill your entire fucking family.
