It wasn’t exactly rare to have someone knock on Bernadetta’s door. People got rooms wrong all the time, or just wanted to check in on their favorite shut-in. This time, of course, it was the latter. While she saw her regularly enough in the web design classes she was the TA for, Shamir had never come to her room directly. That is, until now.

The tweet the poor girl had posted was likely on accident, but she wasn’t about to let an opportunity to ease a student into campus activities go to waste. Especially ones that weren’t a waste of time, and actually helped the entire campus! Plus, there was the fact that one of the professors she reported to was promising coffee on them for any TA that brought along a student from their class. 

Knocking purposefully, if not loudly, she says, “Bernadetta. It’s your TA, Shamir. I noticed you were interested in the campus event. Did you need any help getting started outside?”

“You know, I don’t think we’re qualified to be checking how well trees are planted.” Sending a TA that specialized in STEM and a history professor of all people seemed a little cruel. Maybe like the start of a really boring joke, even. Thinking back, she probably took a single biology class in her whole academic career.

Checking the clipboard that held the tree planting standards for the #TeamTrees movement, she compares it against a newly planted tree nearby. She couldn’t complain too much. It was preferable to actually lugging around the saplings and planting them herself. Besides, it was useful, right? “Have you ever been to one of these events before? I don’t think I’ve ever seen one in person.”

chiaki normally wasn’t too concerned about how people viewed her, but even she had to admit this was a little embarrassing. she folded her arms, fingers curling slightly in her navy hoodie, shifting her eyes to the side.

”i’m sorry…i do want to learn, i just have a hard time in the mornings.”

when shamir mentioned coffee, the girl tapped her chin in thought, thinking through all the caffeinated drinks she had ever had in her life.

”mmm…maybe you’re right. i usually do much better with energy drinks, so maybe coffee couldn’t cut it. y’know, monsters and stuff. i don’t like the taste but when you drink it all the time for your work, you don’t really mind it anymore, y’know? i did see a thing on twitter about someone brewing their coffee using an energy drink instead of water…do you think that would help, maybe?”

there was a lot to unpack here.

“I understand that getting up early can take a lot to get used to. Is this your only morning class or do you have more?” If she was like this in her others, there could be a big problem they’d need to tackle somehow. 

“Uh.” Maybe it was just time to throw the whole suitcase away. “Energy drinks can be... okay in moderation if you’re using them for the caffeine, but I don’t recommend them for the long run. And it’s definitely dangerous to brew coffee using energy drinks.” Not to mention plain disgusting. She wondered if this girl possessed taste buds at all. Or cooked regularly. “Let’s try a few other methods before you go a more extreme route. Do you go to bed late? Do you take naps when you don’t have class? Maybe your sleep schedule could just use adjustment.”

❝You okay?❞ Hitoshi asks after watching a sobbing customer leave the tattoo parlour. The girl was booked for a piercing on her ears and her nose but as soon as she sat down and saw the sterilized needle, she just started freaking out. If it weren’t for her girlfriend who convinced her to push through it, she would have wasted her booking. 

But now it looks like the whole deafening fiasco has put Shamir in a bad mood.

He couldn’t blame her though. The customer wouldn’t stop squirming on her seat and had the gall to raise her voice at the woman she was paying to do what she wanted her to do in the first place. Hitoshi couldn’t imagine himself having the patience to do the job with a vulgar customer like that. Good thing he’s just an assistant and didn’t have to deal with her as much as Shamir had.

❝Want me to get you something? Water? Coffee? A murder weapon? You name it.❞

“I’m just... annoyed.” It was far from the rage she had felt earlier. Being a piercer was a taxing job at times, but she was glad the outbursts from customers were something she didn’t have to experience so often. Usually they just said what they wanted, sat there and let her do her job. Why couldn’t all people just be clinical about it? Sometimes, she wondered if taking out human interaction all together would make a better job.

“Sure, thanks. Maybe just a coffee.” A murder weapon? “The needle’s enough for murder already.” It was sharp enough, and there wasn’t a safety on it like those gross piercing guns at the mall and kiosks had. “But as awful as that was, murder’s not worth losing my job over.” Even if their boss was understanding as he could be. She sets to cleaning her station and her implements, wondering if another customer would wander in soon to erase her memory of the previous ones. If she was lucky, they would even tip.

A heaving sigh leaves her lips as she drags her tired body through the glass door of her apartment complex. Weighed down by large sack filled with papers to grade and a large backpack that looked comically oversized on her lithe frame, it took almost all she had to stumble into the elevator and slowly slide down until she sat on the floor disregarding the other woman who had walked in after her.

Doing her best to avoid eye contact, she pulled out her phone and fired up her chat app.

She had never thought herself to be one to rely on social media so much for interaction. That was for nerds. For shut-ins. All the stereotypes and stigmas she was convinced she didn’t embody at all. Yet, she’s happy enough to board the elevator behind her neighbor, ignoring their plight for now. She didn’t ask for help after all and seemed to board just fine.

Pressing the up button, she turns her attention back to her phone. A new notification had popped up.

hello! life has been kicking me for the past few weeks, but i’m finally able to be active again. 

going to discard my last starter call since a few people have dropped since then, but like this post for an event related starter. capped at 3!

a final loud snore came out of chiaki as shamir shook her to consciousness, a few locks of hair sticking up on the side of her head where she was leaning against the desk. she rubbed her eyes with her sleeve, blinking slowly as she looked around the room, and then at her t.a.

”nnn…did we have a fire drill?”

she looked just past shamir and up at the clock on the wall, blinking again. oh, class had just ended, and she just got caught falling asleep. not good. she swallowed and straightened herself out, scratching her head and fixing the messed up hair a bit.

”i’m sorry…it was a pretty long night for me, and i didn’t have time to get coffee…am i in trouble?”

“No. We didn’t.” She quirks a brow at her student, amazed she could fall asleep for such a short time and be so out of it so quick.

“You fell asleep is what happened.” Realizing she’s probably donning a tone fit for one of those professors that treat all adult students like disobedient children, she changes her position to sitting on the table nearest to Chiaki. “Look. I’m not going to tell you how to live your life or scold you or anything. You’re an adult.” Considering the homework and projects largely relied on class hour materials and demonstrations, she knew there would need to be some sort of change.

“You need to stay focused or you won’t be able to pass this class. If you keep falling asleep, you willfail. And I doubt you want to keep failing your first required coding class your entire academic career.” She crosses her arms. “Will coffee really keep you awake?” As much as she loved it herself, she doubted this girl would handle six espresso shots well.

usually across the board, students don’t have a hard time paying attention to classes dealing with their own major in comparison to other core or mandatory classes just for credits. chiaki didn’t share that ability. at least she was not discriminatory in that she could fall asleep anywhere at any time. she tried to stay focused through her 10 a.m. intro to coding class through a variety of methods: rapid blinking, swaying her legs, occasionally pinching in between her fingers. she had to stay focused, she had an instructor, a t.a. and about twenty other first-years huddled around her.

however, almost fifteen minutes until the end of class, she couldn’t resist her exhaustion any further. that, or she gave up, either or. her head slumped, pencil lazily sliding back to the desk, and she was promptly unconscious.

It's not hard for Shamir to notice students when they slack off blatantly. Going on social media, watching movies, working on assignments for other classes... The distractions went on and on. Even as a TA, she ignored most cases unless they were somehow disruptive or worrying. They were all paying to be there after all. Which meant they were paying to learn however they wanted, whether that involved covert Snapchat stories or drawing all over their notes. Why should she baby them just because she was assisting the instructor?

Yet, it was hard to ignore a student just sleeping. The other first years noticed too, but under her steely gaze, they weren't bold enough to try anything. Even if they did, they should know from the syllabus she wasn't shy on calling them out. Soon enough, the last fifteen minutes of class are over, with the student still snoring softly.

According to the roster, this was Chiaki. With a free time slot for this room after this class, it's safe to say she would be able to sleep through her next class without anyone interrupting her. Fortunately, that possibility is dashed once Shamir shakes her shoulder roughly.

"Hey. Chiaki?" She waits for her to rouse before continuing.
