Basically, in the modern world that trades and offers more than resources for commerce, resources mean little for your wealth (although it can contribute, look at countries like Korea, Japan, Australia- very little resources, extreme wealth). (2). The reason Africa is so poor in the modern era is for four reasons: 1) because their advancement has always been so far behind the rest of the world, 2) because they are multiplying at rates they cannot sustain, 3) corrupt current governments, (here is a good example of the UK’s aid money going to the leader), 4) the mass violence, crime, murders. Disease and famine may also play a role (but that is debatable.) (2).
Africa’s poverty actually has little to nothing to do with colonization- in fact, colonization may have very well benefited the colonized. (2). Hell, even Obama said “ Africa should stop blaming history for its economic problems.”

Poverty is heavily present in Ukraine, the Baltic States, Hungary, Russia, Moldova, Romania, Ireland, Greece, Spain (one of the colonizing countries). Did Europeans colonize and often use the resources of Africa? They did, that is true. But they did the same to Hong Kong and Taiwan. If the effects of colonialism determine modern wealth, why is Hong Kong rich and Taiwan well off?

China and the Far East in general were ahead of everyone for a long time, and China and Europe were about even in the first few centuries AD. European productivity surpassed that of China, the former world leader, somewhere between 1500-1800. We don’t particularly know the reason for this, some say creativity, some say greed, but Europe was already rich before colonialism began.
East Africa (not as much the West) was already poor before colonialism. This is due for many of the reasons above, but also remember that Africa lacked the unity Europe had, possibly due to the Sahara. Europe was already advanced and well off. Keep in mind that Europe did suffer a severe setback after the fall of Rome, but they recovered. This is almost entirely attributed to the Reformation, Renaissance, and Industrial Revolution.
(Arabs were advanced for a period of time but experienced a major setback after Mongol attacks.)
The blunt truth is that Europe and Eastern Asia were far more advanced than the rest of the world at the time of the colonial era.
