Honestly I think Odyssey handles the stylistic clash really well

Most of the game is still in a typical cartoony style so when realistic NPCs/bosses (New Donk City, the dragon, etc) appear it works the novelty in its favor. They don’t appear for too long so it ends up being a pleasant surprise, compared to, say, Sonic ‘06 where the entire game takes place in a human world with human NPCs and the lack of explanation just leaves you completely confused the whole time

Oh no I completely love the style clash. I think it’s hilarious and was definitely done intentionally and to be cheeky compared to when the 3D Sonic games did it when it just felt like it was confused and wanted to be more “serious”. Sonic characters being plopped into a regular human world and setting feels like they didn’t know how to developed a world around Sonic, while putting high fantasy heavily rendered dragons and JP esqu dinosaurs and normal looking business men and cars all in the Mario Universe as being the same world is funny, it just hurts my brain cause of how drastic the differences are tonally

I think the dragon is supposed to be a reference about Mario's voice actor voicing a dragon in Skyrim. That or they just wanted a realistic dragon
