“You’re welcome. You probably shouldn’t take my word as gospel, though. I’ve been told that I tend to over-analyze things.” Beth replied. “I call it being careful, but apparently you can’t please everyone.”

“I think you’re just being helpful, but thanks. Maybe I’ll get a second opinion before I start drawing anything, though. You can never be too careful. You seem like a smart woman. I mean, you can still try.”

“Aw, don’t give me that face. It’s a good idea, right?” Alexandria wanted Rowena to like her, wanted her to accept her, but she also wanted Rowena to approve of her ideas. It was a funny thing, the bond between witch and familiar.

“You tend to work our slower nights, but I’m sure I could show you a thing or two about getting more tips. Years of practice means I know exactly which scumbag is willing to drop a twenty, and which one will hardly tip fifty cents.”

“You’re the best. It’s so great how you just know everything about this stuff. You could totally be the manager one day. But not before you finish teaching me how to be a real bartender, like Tom Cruise in Cocktail. I’ll need to know everything I possibly can before you leave me alone back here.”

“Sweetheart, you just keep being your perky lil self and those tips will come rolling in faster than the Stones. Sayin’ that, you follow your heart. Hey, another idea- you could make a big production of hopping up onto the bar and pulling a Coyote Ugly when you get the real big bucks. You’d make enough to retire from me alone.” A-wink. 

“That’s so nice, thanks! I’m hoping flowers will help, but you never know until you try. Oh gosh, I don’t know if I could pull that off. Maybe that should be saved for a special occasion, when there’s another bartender working. You know, several of the other girls here could totally work it, I’m sure. They can even flip bottles behind their backs. That would be the show you should drop the big bucks on.”

“Pretty sure that’s not how that works,” But Asher wasn’t going to argue with the girl, if she continued to insist. There wasn’t really much of a point in it, she would probably never back down. “Yeah, sure, but grilled cheese? Who wants to specialize in that? There’s one way to do it- butter, bread, cheese. The only way to do it wrong is in the microwave.” He shook his head, laughing an amused little laugh. “I won’t even deny that, but I’m not eating that grilled cheese. You couldn’t pay me to eat that grilled cheese.”

“Maybe they make specialty grilled cheese. Like....Ham and cheddar with apple slices, or pastrami and provolone on rye bread. What do they call it on Master Chef? Upscaling? That’s what they’re doing here.” She gave him a scrutinous look. “You don’t cook, do you? There’s always a way to make it more fun. I don’t know, some food can be better in the microwave. Have you ever tried making a cake in a mug? You just put all the ingredients together in a big mug, pop it in the microwave for a few minutes, and you’ve got a little cake. It’s great.” Maybe she was overdoing the friendliness, not everyone appreciated it the way she did. “Please eat something, at least. I won’t go away until you do.”

“Its quite obvious you put effort into it so I hope as well.”

“I’m hoping to dress the whole place up a little, but with Christmas coming up, it can’t be anything too drastic. Just a little something here and there to make the place look brand new.”

“In that case, I suppose it depends on your typical clientele. A friendly message will be more obvious, while flowers would be more subtle, but still draw the eye. You could do both, but it’s only a small jar, so that might look cluttered and desperate, or like you had a little too much free time on your hands.”

“A lot of tough guys, trucker types, but with the town filling up there are a lot more people visiting us. That’s a really good point, we wouldn’t want anything thinking we’re slacking off around here.” She said with a laugh. “I think I’m going with the flowers, then. We don’t want to be too obvious, you know? Thanks.”

“You can’t scientifically prove an opinion, but- sure, okay. I just don’t get the point of a food truck dedicated purely to grilled cheese. Sure, it’s good, but it’s not that good.” He raised his eyebrows, watching her for a moment before sighing. “I’m not grumpy, I’m like this all the time.” God, she was peppy.

“Then it must be a fact, right?” Alexandria said with a laugh. He seemed like a nice kid, despite his pessimistic leanings, and she was positive she could get him to see the light easily. “I think it’s because this way you know they’ll do it right. If you have a food truck that does pizza and sandwiches and smoothies, you know everything they make will be pretty good. But if the truck has a specialty, you know the food will be great.” She shrugged. “I think that’s called moody, then. Probably because you didn’t eat breakfast. You should get a grilled cheese.”

“Do you just want my money? Or are you genuinely asking for my advice?”

“Well, if you wanted to tip I wouldn’t stop you, but I was asking for advice. Do you think flowers would work, or should we draw a friendly message instead?”

*· ☆,.- “Maybe?” Skyler shrugged her shoulders before giving the other a small nod. “Like, you are sort of asking thw rong one here. Flowers are not exactly my thing. Really not.”

“How can flowers not be your thing? Even people who don’t know a lot about them like them.” Alexandria said with a smile. “Well, you can at least tell me if this looks right.” She drew some petals on the jar with a marker and showed it to the other woman. “Should I add leaves to this?”

“Thank you! I hope the rest of the customers agree.”

“I was ten seconds away from telling you what a terrible idea that is, but knowing you, that might actually work.”

“I hope it will. I’m tired of splitting the six dimes left by closing with you. Not that I mind the sharing part, but it would be nice to have something a little more substantial to take home. I’d even be happy with two dollars. Or a couple of those little stamp-cards with almost all the stamps filled in. I love it when people leave those.”

“You would? You might be the only person in here who would. The day drinkers are usually the worst tippers.” Alexandria quickly scribbled a couple vines and petals onto the jar. “Does this look like a tulip to you?”
