their comment made him immediately spark up, his unsure expression turning into one of pure joy. he unconsciously tightened his grip around them. “ that makes me happy, ” zero admitted. deciding it best to slowly get them accustomed to the fact that there might not be more hits, he did the complete opposite of his previous actions and lessened his hold enough for them to be able see each other eye to eye. the teen smiled sweetly as he made sure to hold their hand to keep some comfort. “ i mean, i think you are. usually i wouldn’t be this calm so you must be doing something right. ”

they were surprised to feel him hug her tighter, and hear him so happy. “r --- really?” they questioned, eyebrows raised in surprise as they looked up at the other. they hadn’t realized how much he cared. it was a weird feeling, knowing someone cared like that, but it was nice. haruhi softly smiled up at the other. “well, that makes me happy too. glad we could...help each other out.” the words sounded awkward on their tongue, but the meaning was genuine.

“Well, with me you won’t have to worry about that. I think I’ve never slapped anyone yet….” she tilted her head to the side, smiling. Blushing again as she did. “And thank you for thinking I am nice. That is something my mother taught me. Or, let’s better say, she is also a very nice woman, and I always wanted to be like her in that case,” she quickly explained, rubbing her heated cheeks.

“oh, okay. that’s good,” haruhi mumbled, offering the other a small smile. they noticed the other’s faint blush, and felt a blush creeping its way across their own cheeks, too. “that’s nice to hear you learned that from your mother. really, it is,” they murmured, thinking about how they didn’t have a mother to look up to for very long. but they didn’t want to dwell on it. they shook their head, banishing the thought as they spoke up again. “am --- am i making you blush? sorry, i didn’t mean to. sorry.” they gave an awkward smile, blushing as well.

“sounds rough,” haruhi sighed, eyeing the other out of the corner of their eye. they leaned up against the elevator. “well, is there anything i can do to help you remember?”

Wendy laughed softly, shaking her head when Haruhi mentioned that she also could have hit them. “Oh - really? I mean, are such things really happening because of an innocent kiss onto the cheek?” All she could remember herself were her brothers rubbing them off again, making a grimace. Typical guys. At some age they just felt like ‘too mature’ to get a simple, innocent cheek kiss from one of their family members….

“well ---- i don’t know, for sure,” they explained, rubbing the back of their head nervously. “i mean, if someone really didn’t want it, then yeah, they might hit. but i think you’re too nice for that.” they weren’t really one to go around making assumptions about people, but haruhi really meant what they said. wendy had been incredibly kind and positive, and it was a little strange to haruhi almost. a good strange, but strange nonetheless.

“oh. uh...okay. i’m haruhi.” the elevator opened and they stepped inside, keeping the door open so the other could follow. “do you...remember why you’re not remembering stuff? at all?”

he licked his lips and nodded at her statement. it was true, he wasn’t shaking and whimpering like usual – especially with knowing that his beloved jack wasn’t here anymore. things were obviously different know. the other apparently brought him a sense comfort he didn’t know he needed. zero sniffed as he whispered. “ you’re right … and my friend’s not here to help me either. a – am i, uh, helping you ?? ”

they smiled slightly, noticing the other’s demeanor completely shift to something a little more awkward. “yeah. you’re helping me a lot,” they muttered, cheek still pressed up against the other’s chest in fear that another thunderclap might hit soon. “am i helping you?” the question was hesitant as they didn’t know the depth of the other’s fears, and haruhi had been a mess from the start, so there was no telling.

“It is alright. And it felt nice, so… you have no need to apologize I guess… really….” Rubbing the back of her neck Wendy looked over at Haruhi, not sure what else to do or to say. This was the first time something like this happened to her, after all, and she had no idea if Haruhi would like to have a similar kiss. Or a hug. Or if Wendy should just say nothing more about it maybe.

“r-really?” haruhi asked, feeling a little sheepish. why were they so surprised to hear that she liked it? “well, i’m....glad you liked it. cause i was worried you might...hit me or something.” they punctuated their sentence with a short, breathy, awkward laugh. god, they were feeling really awkward. even after a year or two of charming girls in the host club, once faced with a real girl, haruhi managed to get all flustered.

zero doesn’t budge, doesn’t even think about leaving the other alone before making sure they were alright. he was fascinated. scared of thunderstorms – that sure made their job back at halloween town easier. he wondered if they were easily frightened by other things. still, he wanted to make haruhi feel better in some way. “ yeah, well … thunderstorms make me feel weird too. ”

“really?” haruhi blurted, surprised to hear the statement coming from the other. they knew fear of thunderstorms was a silly thing that only children really experienced, so hearing that someone could identify with them felt a little strange. maybe he was lying to make her feel better. “you seem okay now,” they murmured, not trying to dismiss his feelings, but feeling skeptical that he felt similarly at all.

“the food here really isn’t that bad, unless you have expensive tastes. but there’s a pretty decent burger place around here, if you’re looking for something edible.”

“of ---- of course you’re allowed to ask!” haruhi breathed, already feeling a little awkward about the whole encounter. nonetheless, they put up their best host attitude as they managed to keep a smiled spread on their lips the entire time ---- no matter how awkward it appeared. “i thought you might...want a kiss on the cheek? i --- i dunno, it was a stupid observation and ---- well, i guess i’m feeling brave today.”

haru – that was all he heard clearly. zero made sure to remember to ask about it once more after this was over. he never knew how scary thunder could be. he was used to the more old-fashioned scares. yelling, blood, gore; yet he couldn’t find it in his heart to think less of them because of this. truth be told, he found their embrace just as comforting. “ i’m zero … sorry you’re scared. ”

a breath of a laugh manages to escape them at the thought that the other actually apologized for them. “you don’t ---- you don’t have to apologize,” they mutter, lifting their head from the boy’s chest just a bit so he could hear them better. “i’ve been scared of thunderstorms since i was little,” they explained, now with their cheek pressed to the other’s chest so they could speak clearly. they still were too afraid to let go, although the hug was definitely helping relax them.
