A retelling of a Norwegian folktale in the genre of ‘’The devil gives people rides’’.
At least part 1 of 2. Not sure if I am interested enough in the second half of the story to draw it out since this is the interesting bit.
But there are a lot of subtle cultural things going on in this folktale the narrator expects the audience to know about. So let’s start from the beginning:
Maybe sometimes that useless emotional support devil is ok.
(( Part 2 of the Norwegian folktale ‘’Fanden and the boy’’.
Here’s Part 1! ))
(( Based on the Norwegian Folktale ‘’Fanden and the Boy’’
Part 1.
Part 2! ))
In Scandinavian folklore, the devil would every Sunday write the names of those who fell asleep during church services into their book.
Norwegian Folktale retelling of the story ‘’Fanden and Futen’’.
The small historical context behind the Fut was that they would collect taxes and debt for local landlords, but from from the 1600′s they became the Danish-Norwegian’s king’s tax and debt collectors.
They were highly unpopular with the population.
Another fun fact is that in Danmark-Norway, 11. June and 11. December, tax and debt collecting days were in jest called ‘’The Devil’s Birthday’’.
Wistfully longing for the day I get myself working on that comic I’ve wanted to do for these two…

(( I haven’t done much on Tumblr which. Yeah... my fault. But I probably would have roleplayed more on Tumblr if it was a better website and didn’t delete everything I write constantly.
I can write something, go on youtube to switch a song real quick, and then everything’s gone. Gone with the wind. As if it was never written. It doesn’t make for a fun time, I’ll admit.
It’s as if it’s using negative conditioning... how dare I write \ how dare I look away.
Anyways, Tumblr is a functional website. ))
Reading (mainly Scandinavian) folklore and history books and about how the devil is presented in them is so funny to me.
The devil out of pure spite against the church: Gives people an education, food, money, tells people to go against the establishment, says sex is ok actually, magic and curses. And they give people an opportunity to NOT be miserable and a way to climb the social ladder. Also acts as the midwife to women giving birth out of wedlock and an out from unwanted parenthood.
The church: NO!!! THAT’S ILLEGAL!!! STOP THAT!!!! YOU’RE EVIL AND YOU MUST BE STOPPED!!! STOP RUBBING YOUR EVIL LITTLE HANDS ALL OVER WHAT IS NATURAL AND HOLY!!!
The devil: No.

(( Ok, so. Tyken likes birds, they have a lot of pet birds. Magpies mainly that imprinted on them and can’t be in the wild (they’re their favorite). They always got a pet bird flying about. Always.
Though, sadly, a lot of birds typically only live for about a decade. So whenever they die, Tyken decides whether they want to either stuff the animal and display it as a decoration. A cherished, memorial for the animal they've raised and lost. Or if they'll keep the bones by going through the long process of seeing them decompose, macerate them, degrease, and wash them before placing them in the cabinet.
They get to cry, they get to mourn, they get to see them return to nature, and leave behind a small something to remember them by. Something physical to show that they were there and that they're still loved. They really cherish their animals even if they might show it in a bit untraditional way. Their bird skull collection might be their most priced possessions (for sentimental reasons), actually.
They regularly clean and work with the bones. They might sometimes be used for magical purposes. They also give them offerings in death, like worms and good food, for their spirits to take. The birds are a small something worth venerating for them. When they miss them they'll walk over to the bones to hold and talk to. They find it therapeutic.
They collect bones from other animals too, but that's for fun based around their fascinations surrounding death more than anything else. They think it's neat! Same with taxidermy and wet specimen jars. ))

Ah. It didn’t matter how drunk he was, it was easy for him to notice the disdain in other people. He shrank down into himself, wishing that he could sink down into the earth. Maybe if he wasn’t so afraid of the thought of being buried alive… He looked apologetic and shameful, particularly at the notion of getting him off the street. Was he that much of a nuisance? Of course he was.
“ Sorry… Do I have … Number? No… Money, yes? But you can’t trust them, you can’t. They kidnap people… And no one would ever know… They would never look for me. They never do. ” Hypocritic perhaps, but he really didn’t want to be on the receiving end of it. “ It’s okay. I’m on my way… home. Home? Yeah. I know my way home, I won’t be in they way. ” They glanced at the other, thoughtfully… Gauging potential. But no, they looked too scary. Almost familiar… Maybe? He didn’t really think before he spoke, fidgeting with his clothes. “ I’ve seen you… Somewhere? I don’t see a lot of people outside of… Work…? Maybe a doctor… ” The more he mumbled, the more it seemed like he was talking to himself rather than the stranger.
Crossing their arms, Tyken took a drag from their cigar and used it to support their head as they listened to the drunk’s ramblings. ‘’Oh dear...’’ they replied dryly. And here they thought the taxi companies screened their drivers better than that to avoid accidents like he described.
Quirking their head they mulled over his question, drumming their hand against their cheek. ‘’Oh my!’’ they chuckle, covering up their much too big grin. ‘’No, no, I am no doctor, but hospital visits are frequent enough. I am a funeral worker, you see. How... are we acquainted exactly?’’ they trailed off at the end, their face going along with the mental journey and struggle to put a name or a face on the drunk. If they were even acquainted at all.

Was he alone, drunk wandering the streets late at night? Perhaps. Something that normally gave him an anxiety attack ( and he wasn’t exactly comfortable ), but alcohol had a habit to make him braver to a fault. And he was so very lonely now that his latest companion had outstayed his welcome. Maybe a trip to the bar, maybe he could manage to chat someone up. He was free for another day after all. Stumbling on his feet, he knocked into the person in front of him, almost losing his balance completely. ( He hadn’t even noticed, caught up in his own loop of thoughts, plans. ) “ Ah- Sorry! Sorry… ” He tried to shuffle back, swaying dangerously close as he tried to regain his balance. “ I didn’t mean to-”
Staying outside with a cigar in their hand for a smoke break, Tyken breathed in the cool night air, and listened to the buzzing of the night life.
They didn’t move out of the way for the obviously drunken person as they thought themself to be standing at a conveniently and easy to avoid spot closely against the wall of the building they were going to revisit once their cigar was done away with. Alas, they were apparently not as conveniently placed as they wanted to think they were, it seems. As he crashed into them, making them almost lose their cigar out of their hand.
Tyken gave the drunken passerby a cringed look of second hand embarrassment. Wandering the streets like a highly noticeably and half dead drunk had no place in the public sphere to do. Drinking had a time and place but the streets was not that place. Distasteful is what it was.
‘‘Er... yes... very well. Apology accepted,’’ they hesitantly got out. Skeptical. No need to get too upset, yet, they suppose. ‘’But you really aught to get yourself a taxi back home. Do you have the number? The money? Surely there ought to be something that can be done to get you off the streets.’‘

Semi-Selective and private Multimuse RP blog with characters and world building heavily based on Scandinavian folklore and mythology.
I suck at keeping my blog active. Like, I’m always logged on and I check it, but I’m not the best at showing it. Anyways, here’s a small and tentative plot wish list for Tyken.
(( Minorly updated Erik and Tyken’s pages. And updated the Verse description. Nothing overly exciting.
Though I have a feeling I want to update Erik and Tyken’s pages some more later.))
