Very random but I think a contributor to the enormity of what mascot horror is as a genre is the fact that it’s one of the only socially acceptable ways to create content with colorful/cute characters that has depth and isn’t expressly for children.

It’s the simplest, most profitable way to create something with cute, comforting characters AND a mature twist, which is a very popular concept with people (ESPECIALLY the neurodiverse) but most are unwilling to write the concept outside of a horror or shock content setting, because sincerity is heavily discouraged nowadays.
