First day at the new job

The training isn't what I thought it would be. I was told 14 weeks of training. I figured that would include some on-the-job training, but the majority would be class time because it's a crapton to learn. Nope, about 1/3 of that is class time, and the rest is on the phones. So much for taking it a little easy...

The bathroom at my new job is larger than the entire lunch room at my old job. There are about 3 times as many stalls in the bathroom at my new job compared to the bathroom at my old job. I don't think there are 3 times as many employees... The ratio is a lot more comfortable, and there are plenty of windows so the whole place feels quite spacious.

Lunch is 40 minutes instead of the usual 30, and sweet mercy, breaks are paid! I went for 3 years without paid breaks! In fact, I asked my trainer if breaks there were paid, and she said yes and looked at me like she'd never heard of UNpaid breaks. Had to tell her that technically it's legal in this province to not pay for breaks, and that the last job I had took advantage of that law...

I have to say, though, I freaking loathe having to wake up at 5:30 and leave the house at 6, walk to the bus stop in the dark and cold, and then arrive there 25 minutes early. :/ Getting home's easier; I just have to walk for 15 minutes, catch a bus, wait for 15 minutes, then catch another bus.

Easy is clearly relative. But at least it gives me time to read, if I can keep my eyes open by that point.

Starting my next job tomorrow. Air Canada. Half tempted to start a branch-off tumblr to talk about my 14 weeks of training, because inevitably there's funny stuff to talk about in training. Maybe calling it "The AC." because I think I'm funny.

YESTERDAY'S KIN makes you feel a little bit more intelligent

At Bibliotropic, Ria reviews Nancy Kress’ Yesterday’s Kin.

Much of the science discussed in the book is presented in layman’s terms, and with the exception of the definition of a haplogroup, there was nothing that I didn’t understand the concepts behind nor found that they didn’t make sense. However, I admit that I’m an amateur geneticist and anthropologist at best, so people with more experience in these fields may find the presented scientific arguments somewhat lacking. I really can’t say. But for my part, and for what I suspect will be the vast majority of readers, the concepts are sound and present some interesting speculation about early humanity and diverging evolution. You come away from Yesterday’s Kin feeling a little bit more intelligent.

So happy that one of my bookmarks sold today! It's been about 2 years since I really sold something on Etsy, and for a long time I had nothing listed there while I was going through Health Crap from Hell, so selling even one small bookmark is something I feel like I ought to be proud of, given that I've had to start from scratch when it comes to creating and marketing. :3
