The lights in the ballroom are dim, the unusual power outage drowning everyone in an amber glow from the thousands of candles placed around the room. The scent of wax is thick in the air, the room growing hotter and hotter from the tiny flames and dancing bodies twirling across the marble floor. Shades of crimson and blush, coal and emerald blur with every movement, every dip, every spin, creating a flurry of colour and determination to outshine every other pair.
He watches on from the side, a beautifully crafted glass in his hand, the scarlet liquid inside leaving a vibrant stain on his lips. Only he knows what it is, the delightful scent bringing a smirk to his lips and the sweet taste coating his tongue.
I watch him from the other side of the room, clutching my glass in my hand, the rich red wine going straight to my head the more I drink. I can feel his eyes on me, those dark orbs watching with intent as he drinks, glancing up at me over the rim of his glass. I have nowhere to hide, not even amongst the throng of dancers gliding across the floor. I canât help but admire their grace, the fluidity in the way they move. Itâs almost inhuman.
I down the rest of my drink, placing my glass down on a nearby table, making no attempt at finding someone to dance with. But, he has other ideas. Heâs no longer standing in his spot when I look across the room, goosebumps forming on my skin as I feel a presence behind me.
âItâs awfully rude to stare, my dear. Didnât anyone ever tell you that?â
His voice is bewitching, like a spell murmured with hushed words, made to entrance and enthrall anyone who hears it. I can feel his lips by my ear, his warm breath fanning across my cheek making me shudder, the commotion in the room fading into nothing as he gently grabs my hand, walking around to face me.
His skin is deathly cold against mine, but I take no notice as he tilts my chin up with his free hand, coaxing me into looking at him. His lips curl into a smirk, one that has my legs trembling and my bottom lip catching between my teeth. I know he notices it, something dark flickering in his crimson eyes as he trails them over my flushed face.
âIâm sorry, I didnât mean to make you flustered, my dear. Iâm sure you noticed that I was staring back.â I simply nod, unable to form any words as I take in his features; raven hair, glowing tanned skin, beautiful crimson eyes, a gorgeous smile â heâs otherworldly. Too perfect to be from this wretched world.
âWhatâs your name?â
I can barely mutter my own name, but he hears it loud and clear, his smirk morphing into a gentle smile as it leaves my lips. God, that smile could kill a man. I swear my heartbeat is loud enough for him to hear, the pounding in my ears growing more powerful as he brings my hand up to his lips.
Theyâre invigoratingly cold against the back of my hand, and I canât help but let my mind travel down the wrong path, the desire to have them everywhere fueling me to finally speak.
âWhatâs yours?â His eyes flicker as he lowers my hand, still keeping a gentle hold on it, and a voice in my head screams at me to not let him go.
âHakyeon, my dear. Cha Hakyeon.â Iâve heard that name before, I know I have. All those books I read when I was younger, all those stories my father used to tell about the ancient creatures who used to roam the earth. Blood thirsty monsters, creatures of the night, the center of a peasant womanâs fantasy. Creatures of hunger and lust, pleasure and pain, blood and death. Just like him.
The words that leave his lips next send a chill down my spine, my blood running cold and my heart threatening to burst out of my chest in an attempt to escape what is to come.
âI knew Iâd find you again, my love.â
