Céline explains how the silence she created helps the audience to focus on their own breathing and own emotions
(One last time: thank you @bereaving for being the most wonderful collaborator, you’re the best <3)
“From that moment on, after this last outpouring of ocean waves, we enter into an almost total sound destitution. Silence in cinema doesn’t exist, it is filled. Especially since we spatialize the sound, so it is filled in more than one way; it is filled in 5.1 and so you have to think a lot to manage to create silence: what is this silence made of, what note, what wind. Do we want to feel it, do we want to forget it? Here we only remain in the voices and bodies. Silence also means making room for bodies, for the sound of the characters and actors’ bodies, their breathing in the sound.”
“And above all, this silence is the condition for a quality of listening. We always think about the sensations, the sensory experience that the film is for the audience, and this silence makes them hear their own breathing, they share the space with the people around them and the emotions are heard.”
“And this ability, this listening that we create through emptiness is also a focus and attention to our own emotions as viewers.”
