I found myself wishing I could adequately explain why paying homage to the BLM movement by having a black lesbian brutally murdered seems ridiculous and counterproductive and I think I finally figured it out. It’s because I already know that black people get murdered by the police on a regular basis. I already know that the justice system is not rigged in our favour. I don’t need fiction to tell me what my reality is when the real radical storytelling imo would be having black people living, breathing, telling their stories and providing them with emotional depth and character development.
And THAT is to me how you show that black lives matter. Not by turning our deaths into punchlines or social commentary which is just another way of dehumanising us. I guess that’s the main reason why I think that this is complete bullshit and it makes it worse knowing this was written by white people and mainly white people are endorsing this.
When Beyonce made lemonade to make the same point she gave us black women smiling, happy, united in grief, anger, having lives and stories and not just showing clips of our brutalised bodies. The difference between these things handled by actual minorities and these things handled by the majority who often don’t know what the fuck they’re talking about.
