This is a comment someone appended to a photo of two men apparently having sex in a very fancy room, but it’s also kind of an amazing two-line poem? “His Wife has filled his house with chintz” is a really elegant and beautiful counterbalancing of h, f, and s sounds, and “chintz” is a perfect word choice here—sonically pleasing and good at evoking nouveau riche tackiness. And then “to keep it real I fuck him on the floor” collapses that whole mood with short percussive sounds—but it’s still a perfect iambic pentameter line, robust and a lovely obscene contrast with the chintz in the first line. I went back to dig up this post because I was thinking about poetry.

This is one of those non-poem things that are among my favorite poems.

As the OP stated, the use of alliterative consonants is aesthetically just great, especially the placement of the strongest use at the end: “fuck him on the floor.” The use of “chintz” is indeed great word choice.

Because I’m insane, decided to scan the poem:

Not only is the second sentence, indeed, perfect iambic pentameter, the entire poem is perfectly metered, though the first sentence has four iambs rather than five.

There are further things I love about this poem, though: I like the casual connotations of “keep it real” juxtaposed with “chintz.” It causes me to interpret the “chintz” more strongly as meaning something fake, a facade. There is also of course the coarseness of “fuck,” which is a contrast with “chintz” but a different kind of contrast, gutsy and carnal where “chintz” is flimsy and inanimate.

And then there is the storytelling: there is SO MUCH storytelling in just these two lines. To break it down: The speaker is having sex with a married man, in the house he shares with his wife, which is “filled with chintz”—something that here connotes fakeness, in contrast with “keep it real.”

The illicit encounter in the poem takes place within a house filled with facade, the flimsy construction of the wife’s marriage and domestic sphere, but the encounter itself is a taste of something “real.” That’s a story, and it’s just two lines.

This is EIGHTEEN SYLLABLES, y’all. The amount of meaning condensed into these eighteen syllables is stunning, and it is so elegantly done.

From a technical standpoint (and ive taken 300- and 400-level poetry classes so I can say this) this is damn near flawless as a poem.

Ah dang to go further; the floor is framed as a refuge. As if there is literally no other space in this house that hasn't been populated by his wife with flimsy inanimate fakery. There is no space for this man in this house save for the floor. There is no space for him on the sofa, oon the counter tops, and most notably, no space for him in the marital bed.

I’d also like to point out the use of the word “has.” The wife has filled the house with chintz. She isn’t filling the house with chintz. She doesn’t fill the house with chintz. She has filled the house with chintz. Use of the past-tense makes the wife a subtly removed element in the story, someone whose presence we see in the environment, but who is blissfully distant during the actors throes of passion. There is an element of physical as well as emotional separation from the wife that is catalyzed by being fucked on the floor. Use of the past tense is an end to the wife presence in the actors life, a carnal catharsis amid cold fragility and emotional distance.

How do I know this? I transitioned into girlhood myself. Before I transitioned, I desired girlhood. I desired it a lot. I felt wrong without it. And so on and so forth; you've heard this story before.

The thing is, I am a cis girl who had previously identified as genderfluid.

Not all cis women are born with breasts and/or a vagina. How very perisex of you.

Trans and cis women are the same gender. I should not even have to say this.

Correction: some of us desire breasts and a vagina. For example, I desire bigger breasts in a gender-affirming way. I don't desire a vagina necessarily because I was born with one, but I do desire the idea of a vagina that's been popularized by society ("I just love being penetrated and I can always come from it!!!").

I never said that society's idea of womanhood (which includes that women have vaginas, and that they are "perfect" vaginas) is equivalent to womanhood. That's the thing about gender: it's a social construct.

If womanhood is not a gender, then womanhood does not exist. Womanhood is a set of feelings, behaviors, actions, thoughts. Again, a social construct. Social constructs speak to who we are as people and as a society -- not to our bones.

Mmm. Yeah I think you misunderstand what a social construct is. A social construct isn't something that is decided on an individual basis. A social construct is decided on by society. So under the social construct model, womanhood would be those sterotypes and ideas, and anyone who did not fit into the sterotype, say a woman who was loud or a woman who agressive, would not be a woman.

Except no. It still would, because adult human females would still exist. The term is similar to the term "ewe" or "hen" in that it describes sex, although most of us make exception for intersex people who were assigned a sex different then their opposite sex for the sake of coherent political analysis. The term for the feelings, actions, and thoughts associated with women is "feminity" not womanhood. Which femininity is very much a social construct.

Right, gender is a social construct that is decided on by society and not on an individual basis. That's why I used the examples I did. Society at large generally thinks that women usually have vaginas and that women usually like to be penetrated. Therefore, as a woman, I feel like I need to have a vagina that is a certain way in order to "do" my gender correctly.

But obviously, even woman who do not have vaginas and who do not like to be penetrated are women. Just like loud and aggressive women are women.

Are you like this with other social constructs too? For example, race is a social construct. I'm Native. Using your definition of a social construct, I would be seen by everyone as White since I don't live on a reservation.

But surprise surprise: nobody's come to take away my tribal ID and declare me White now. Because social constructs don't work like that.

Also, intersex people are not an "exception." We should center intersex people in all discussions of gender and sex.

Okay, so since society only views "people with vaginas" as women (which isn't a stereotype) under the social construct model, that means if you have a vagina you are a woman. That is how social constructs work.

And no. While intersex people should be considered in discussion and we should accurately class them according to material reality, we are not going to "center" them when we are not directly or partially dealing with their issues because they make up a massively small number of the population.

Me: intersex women should be included in feminism and treated with thoughtfulness and consideration, but we are not going to center all the discussions about sex and gender (though of course we will center them when discussing their issues) around them because they are a very small portion of the population.
