Happy Anniversary to the English fan translation of Live A Live (SNES) by Aeon Genesis Translations! 🎂🥳🎉

This game was originally released by Squaresoft exclusively in Japan for the Super Famicom. The fan translation finally allowed us to experience this unique classic in English for the very first time.

The game featured an incredible lineup of talent, including the director of Chrono Trigger & Parasite Eve, music by the composer of Kingdom Hearts, and character art by legendary manga artists.

The story follows seven distinct scenarios scattered across different time periods, with two more unlockable scenarios linking the narratives together through the recurring antagonist Odio. The gameplay is split between exploration with story-specific twists, and turn-based combat played out on a grid.

Live-A-Live has a unique battle system you won't find in any other game. Enemies are present on the battlefield like in Chrono Trigger. Touching an enemy enters a battle. Battles are somewhat strategy RPG, similar to the battle system in Final Fantasy Tactics. Characters move around in a grid-like battlefield.

I love Live-A-Live so much. It's one of the handful of SNES RPGs that I keep coming back to. The unique battle system is fun and addicting. I love the manga art style of the character sprites in battle. The soundtrack is fantastic as well.

I'm thankful the English fan translation made Live-A-Live available to us English speakers for many years. In 2022, the game finally received an official worldwide release with the HD-2D remake for Nintendo Switch in 2022. Then in 2023, it was released for PS4, PS5, and PC.

Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon

This is a great remake of the original Genesis strategy RPG, rebuilt for the Game Boy Advance.

It keeps the core gameplay the same, with grid-based tactical battles, a big cast of unique characters, and a simple but charming story about the forces of good standing up to an ancient evil.

This version adds a lot of quality-of-life improvements. The dialogue is expanded, a few new characters are added, and you can replay battles to level up your team. These changes make the game feel more complete without messing with what made the original special.

The graphics are colorful and clean, and the new soundtrack fits the GBA well. It’s not quite as iconic as the Genesis music, but it still sets the right mood.

The difficulty is pretty forgiving, so it’s perfect for newcomers to the genre. Long-time fans might find it a little easy, but it’s still fun and satisfying to play.

Overall, this is one of the better GBA strategy games and a solid remake that respects the original while making smart updates. If you like tactical RPGs, it’s definitely worth your time.
