It's often joked that the state of Undertale's code is the product of Toby Fox doing "musician programming", the natural counterpart to the more common indie game phenomenon of "programmer art", but it's worse than that. Undertale is not Toby Fox's first rodeo. Its code is the work of someone whose entire knowledge of the theory and practice of programming came from romhacking Super Nintendo games.
