I've been having thoughts about Fíann recovering some kind of artefact to resurrect free Rowen's soul from the underworld or w/e

but since Merrick died as well and I Know I'd like to involve his parents and make the conflict into a familial fight, it's time for his parents to shine

Fíann is a bastard but they're worse bastards and honestly I wish I could just give her a machine gun and let her kill them but that wouldn't be fun

"What do you mean 'what have I done'? She's mine." There was something animalistic on Merric's face when he said the words, squinting, like a predator growling softly to scare others from their prey. "No one else's. Fíann belongs to me, she always has. She's quite useful. I can do whatever I please with her family now that I have access to her. Seduce her mom... Oh wait. I did that one already." He seemed to be checking a box on a paper he's holding.

"And what do you do with things that belong to you? Well, you use them." He said it with ease, as if it was the most logical thing to be asked about. "You use them until they break, then you replace them. See... Fíann already cracked a bit. In terms of affection and activity in bed, for example. She's a great lay. But she's not enough. And what, would you want to be stuck with someone who fulfils none of your needs but could be useful in other ways? Of course not."

"She doesn't know how many girls I'm seeing on the side. She never will. It's best this way. But she still lets me use her. When I've had a bad day, which is the whole time I'm around her... Or when one of the other girls doesn't want to do it... In those cases I reach out to their families and pull some strings. Make their families see me as a saint and a blessing and force the girls to stay with me. When that doesn't work though... She's mine again. Just like in the beginning."

Merrick sighed wistfully, staring into the distance, setting the checklist on his desk and walking away from it to gaze at the big garden which could be seen from the windows. "In the beginning... It used to be wonderful. That's why I'm still keeping Fíann close. Now, she chose that we're enemies, and you know what they say - keep your friends close and your enemies closer. And then, I'm sure a part of her misses how things used to be, too. If she didn't she'd have killed me already. Fíann's a snake. Too bad she's so good at hiding it."

"There's much worse that could be happening to you, Kamael. Or far better, maybe. You're too blind to see it. You, all of your brothers... Your father, too. Til the very end the fool thought this was being done for the good of all of you..." Arnold held his pipe in one hand, the other supporting his head as he leaned back in the armchair, looking at the scenery outside the window. The young Corbeaus would often wonder how on earth he was still in such good shape for an old man, but in moments like these when he stayed alone with his memories, the pain would return and remind him he was far from eternal.

"That man is right to have done what he did. Death is but one way for sinners to atone for their sins. To show our Lord that they are willing to abandon their earthly bodies of sin. None of you were willing to atone. None of you! And yet him... I fail to understand why you two are brought together so close. Though... I do see it, too. I see why."

"You can finally use a figure like this in your life, Kamael. After you rejected me and your uncle and saw the message God sent us. It was delivered to us by an angel like you. His wings were not like yours, dark like a demon's, like a being from hell - but you bear all the sins. All of your brothers' sins are yours also. This is why your wings are black. Your soul is just as dark, my dear. And this man will open your eyes to this truth. There are no villains or heroes in this world."

"Sometimes good people are forced to do bad things to keep living, Kamael. You forget that, don't you? Good and bad mean nothing to you, you poor godless fool. And they're everything!" The old man's voice rose dramatically in a moment of emotion. "I hope you realise this. This, and what I told you about death earlier. Death is atonement. And although your bodies are serving the holiest and the unholiest now, this will not be so forever. You will die someday, too. We all atone for our sins. I did so too. When you became angels."

"Mm, they could... they could break her so well a few years ago. The bitch has already put up defense walls so high you'd have to try thrice as hard." Merric is sipping on a lemonade as he thinks about Fíann yet again. At this point the obsession has grown into a huge festering wound, eating at his very being - he has ruined her life thrice, and those of a few other girls... but Fíann, Fíann remains his to break and his alone. "Oh she could have it so bad. I wish she would."

"I see someone is already taking care of it... let's hope there will be more."

"It was all done in the name of good. But the look on your face tells me you do not understand." The man pauses. "You wouldn't, would you? It is not at all that simple." He took off his glasses and laid them in a case about as elegant as them - about as elegant as his coat and pants. Nearly everything in him was perfect. His clothes, his hair and mustache, the look on his face. Now, the latter would be harder to fit into the definition of perfect... but it was obvious the man had full control of himself.

"I assume my nephews and step-nephews' fame precedes them like it always does. They have a certain power over people. A power that has nothing to do with whether or not they're possessed by demons, or sharing their bodies with angels, as they like to call it. And from the look on your face I can notice it. You're one of the poor souls these bastards have dragged into their crusade against fate itself."

It's no one but Samson Corbeau, the Corbeau siblings' uncle who assisted their grandfather in founding the company and beginning the experiments that would alter their entire lives. "We are all sinful. And we all need to be given an example of what fate awaits us... of what there is in store for us. Destruction. That is all. All that the Lord created once upon a time, humans corrupted. And they must suffer for it. This is why my stepnephews became what they are."

"To serve as an example. Somebody has to do this, as arduous of a task as it is... it's one of the most difficult tasks to perform. Being the bad example. Understanding that evil is rooted within you, and accepting that it will conquer all. All of the young Corbeaus are fated to die. Someday. By each other's hands. And for those who interfere with fate, there will be hardh consequences... no one but God can do this."

it's far more likely for your character(s) to have learned about the Corbeaus' terrible family than about Fíann and Merric and what happened between them. Fíann detests that part of her history to the bone and hates talking about it. Unless she considers you a very close friend or generally someone safe to trust - someone that has no connections to Merric and his family - she will be even more taciturn than she usually is.

In contrast, Merric is willing to brag to pretty much about anybody he runs into that suggests they know Fíann even in the slightest how much he suffered by her hands and what he has done to her.

Elsa took a drag of her cigarette, breathing in the smoke and exhaling away from the other's face as she watched them from the porch where she was sitting. "It is her you ought to have turned to." Nothing in her voice gives away any emotion. No anger, no sadness, no joy; if her voice was a canvas, it would be blank. "Not me."

"Last I heard she was doing what her peers would likely call fine... what I would call a continuous fall into disgrace. I assume you must either be one of those peers, coming to prove to me how wrong I am precisely... or you need me for matters connected to the gallery." That was where she worked. The gallery in town. "Aside from having rejected my daughter's works and the ability to promise you they will never even be found in the gallery..."

"...I have not done anything else. Not in the present. Whatever qualms there have been between me and Rigmor in the past belong to the past. And you would be a fool to think otherwise."

"Let me guess... you believed her side of the story, because she's a fucking woman. Because she's that good at portraying herself as the victim." Merric turned around to face the other, having finished adjusting his dark tie that laid atop a light shirt. It was far from the truth if he claimed he was awaiting visitors, yet sooner or later there would be plenty of them. Fíann was a manipulator as good as he was (who else had taught her? It was him. Of course, it was him). In fact, Merric expected much more than one person to join him.

"Outsiders are so damn good at focusing on the side of the story that suits them. And they never wonder if there's anything more."

He pulled his left shirt sleeve up. Above the elbow, his arm bore an ugly, if thin scar that snaked round his arm. "This is merely a tiny part of the work my dear ex-girlfriend did on me. Without me asking, too! How would you have felt if your girlfriend did that to you? Or your boyfriend? Hmm?" Polite curiosity appeared on his face.

"Mind you, this one happened after nothing but a joke. Fíann knew I was not being serious when I said... whatever it was that pissed her off so much. It really set her knickers on fire! I still don't get why."

"But as the case is with too many of these conversations, your mind cannot be changed. Under no circumstances. No one who enters my home arrives by accident. There are either lovers or haters."

"Which side are you on? The truth, or my ex's manipulations? Hmm?"

He could be wrong - he was praying he was wrong - and this could be simply a misguided soul having entered the house by mistake.

And if it was not, he was well-prepared. There were cameras, guards, weapons stashed all over the place. His parents would return from work soon... not soon enough, surely, yet they would be back.

Even better. He could use a few witnesses if there was murder.

Good thing Merric would never grow exhausted of hearing himself tell it over and over again, much like he had done with himself, the mirror, and no one else prior to the influx of defenders Fíann had gained through time. "Oh, you haven't heard about the coolest bit! I almost drained her blood!" he cackled with glee. "She regained it all, it's what this generation of mermaids does, but... there was so much of it!"

Whatever explosive the other man used to blow up his office only succeeded in throwing him back. Like Fíann, Merric would regenerate with plenty of disgusting, squelching sounds, his blood now spilled all over the floor. "How very fair of you! My dear ex-girlfriend has taught you well, has she not? To never hear out the guy everyone thinks is the baddie. Never! Nobody cares about him! About how this lovely ex-girlfriend made sure he was labelled a monster!"

"...Although, seeing the entrance you just had, you remind me of how I used to be. I might like you after all! And Hoyt, whoever he is."
