∘ ˚ Ი𐑼 . ◟ “ you   have   a   real   way   with   words,   you   know   that. ”   the   dryness   of   his   voice   doesn't   quite   bely   the   nerves   stuck   up   under   his   skin.   when   he   flicks   a   gaze   towards   the   door,   the   storm   doesn't   seem   to   be   any   less   horrific   than   it   was   when   he   checked   three   seconds   ago.   he   absentmindedly   adjusts   the   grip   he   has   on   his   bag,   sweaty   palm   slipping   against   the   strap.   another   glance   -   another   lack   of   change.   “ ...   i'm   not   taking   your   bed.   i   can   take   the   couch. ”   even   if   it   does   look   like   shit.   who   is   he   to   judge   when   the   alternative   is   the   fucking   storm.

it's   instinct,   really,   for   neo's   lips   to   twist   into   a   smirk   just   this   side   of   sleazy,   body   pitching   forward   until   he's   effectively   invaded   vernon's   personal   bubble   of   space. “ oh,   i   know.   thought   you'd   like   that, ” he   teases,   fire   licking   up   his   neck   when   he   catches   wind   of   the   nerves   that   dance   across   vernon's   tongue.   smirk   still   in   tact,   he   reaches   out   once   more,   fingertips   brushing   against   the   strap   of   his   backpack   as   he   rolls   his   eyes. “ not   happening, ” neo   declares   with   ease,   touch   trailing   down,   down,   down   until   the   pads   of   his   fingers   make   contact   with   the   fabric   that   falls   over   the   curve   of   vernon's   waist. “ the   couch   serves   as   a   bed   for   drunks   only — sober   pretty   boys   take   the   bed.   ‘s   a   house   rule,   babe,   sorry   to   break   it   to   you.   besides,   you're   not   taking   it   from   me — it's   a   king.   more   than   enough   room   for   two. ”

∘ ˚ Ი𐑼 . ◟ “ yeah,   no,   that's   exactly   how   i   would   describe   you   right   now. ”   the   amusement   is   light   in   his   tone,   but   he's   lacking   both   offense   and   remorse.   he   doesn't   remove   himself,   either   ⎯   better   kyungjun   snap   at   him   than   anyone   else.   “ not   sure   why   you   thought   that'd   do   anything   for   you.   you   know   he's   a   worrywart.   he's   probably   sitting   around   biting   his   nails   about   this   right   now. ”   only   half   -   joking,   mind   you.   he   lets   the   moment   glide,   quiet   and   empty   while   the   next   words   come   to   him.   “ what'd   he   say   to   you   this   time   ? ”

not   for   the   first   time,   guilt   pours   over   kyungjun's   shoulders   like   water,   the   playful   twinkle   in   daeyeon's   eye   more   than   enough   to   wrap   barbed   wire   around   kyungjun's   heart.   it's   out   of   pure   stubbornness   that   his   visage   says   clear — stays   bored,   stays   uninterested,   stays   filled   to   the   very   brim   with   displeasure   for   sangwon's   general   wellbeing   rather   than   regret   for   his   own   temper — and   he   makes   sure   to   take   a   moment   to   sit   with   that   before   he   kicks   his   foot   out   at   his   guest. “ told   him   not   to   do   that   either, ” he   points   out,   arms   crossing   over   his   chest.   it   was   no   use,   he   knows,   not   when   eijirou   takes   such   pride   in   mother   henning   him   with   every   outburst,   but   still — it's   not   as   though   it   would   kill   him   to   take   a   fucking   chill   pill   every   once   in   a   while   instead   of   sending   daeyeon   into   the   lion's   den.   quietly,   he   huffs   out   a   laugh   at   the   question   posed,   head   falling   forward   as   he   rolls   the   tension   out   of   his   shoulders. “ i   had   a   shit   practice, ” he   admits   after   a   moment,   knee   bouncing. “ was   too   slow   and   too   sloppy   with   my   strokes … he   just   wouldn't   fuckin'   leave   it   alone,   like   he   was   trying   to   get   a   rise   out   of   me.   's on me   for taking the bait, i guess. ”

∘ ˚ Ი𐑼 . ◟ he   starts   to   tell   her   that's   not   my   problem,   but   he's   made   it   so.   for   better   or   worse,   he's   here.   he's   been   here,   and   for   a   while   there,   the   only   thing   separating   her   problems   from   his   was   the   illusion   of   personhood   in   a   place   that   stripped   them   of   everything   else.   he   doesn't   drift   closer,   lest   that   thin   veneer   disappears,   too.   instead,   he   leans   back   against   the   wall,   shoving   his   hands   in   his   pockets.   it's   on   his   tongue   to   tell   her   that   they're   out   now   and   this   is   exactly   when   they   should   be   sleeping   of   their   own   volition,   but   he   doubts   yunseo,   of   all   people,   warrants   the   reminder.   studies   her   instead,   the   malice   that   he's   carried   around   since   he   was   a   teen   watered   down   to   something   he   can   carry   at   this   time   of   night.   “ you   got   us   out   of   the   game, ”   he   reminds   her.   not   that   she   needs   that,   either   ⎯   but   maybe   she   does.   it   doesn't   feel   like   they're   out   of   the   game   yet   ;   not   when   they're   still   on   the   weekend   trip,   the   real   one,   huddling   up   together   in   the   rec   center   until   dawn   breaks   and   the   bus   takes   them   the   hell   out   of   here.   “ ...   you   tried   getting   through   to   jeongwon   ? ”   it's   a   long   shot,   even   he   knows   that.   jeongwon   wasn't   real   in   the   first   place,   but   the   absence   of   her   feels   like   a   reality   that   doesn't   fit   quite   right   ⎯   even   to   him.

there's   something   to   be   said,   she's   sure,   about   the   way   her   shoulders   tense   with   the   reminder   of   her   success,   body   still   riddled   with   disbelief   at   her   own   survival. “ doesn't   really   feel   like   it,   though, ” she   admits,   though   just   barely   above   a   whisper.   her   gaze   drops   to   the   floor   with   it,   knees   drawing   idly   up   towards   her   chest.   it's   hard,   she   supposes,   to   believe   such   a   thing   when   they're   still   trapped   in   the   very   same   building   that   put   them   through   hell.   belatedly,   she   wonders   how   he   wound   up   here — it   isn't   as   though   any   of   the   rest   of   them   had   found   the   guts   to   venture   back   into   the   basement — her   cheek   squishing   against   the   chilled   flesh   of   her   knee.   it   takes   a   moment   for   her   brain   to   piece   the   puzzle   together,   flashes   of   junhee's   worried   eyes   and   somi's   hesitant   retreat   playing   out   behind   her   lids.   of   course,   she   thinks — kim   junhee   would   never   let   her   rot   alone.   a   smile   tugs   at   the   corners   of   her   lips   with   the   revelation,   though   her   stomach   turns   regardless,   the   discomfort   only   furthered   by   the   chill   that   threatens   to   run   down   her   spine   at   the   mention   of   jeongwon.   it   takes   a   moment   for   her   head   to   shake,   but   she   gets   there,   eyes   opening   to   latch   onto   him   once   more. “ no   luck   yet, ” she   reports   sadly,   hand   extending   to   brush   shaking   fingers   across   the   keyboard   of   se   eun's   abandoned   laptop. “ se   eun's   codes   are   impossible   to   crack — she   taught   me   everything   she   knew,   and   still,   i   have   no   clue   how   she   created   what   she   did.   who   she   did.   it's … hard,   i   guess,   to   break   through   to   someone   that   you   didn't   know   how   to   code   in   the   first   place.   harder   than   i   expected,   at   least. ”

there's   no   lack   of   fondness   in   the   depths   of   castle's   eyes   when   his   gaze   tilts   towards   the   doorway,   the   gentle   beginnings   of   a   smile   slowly   threatening   to   take   over   from   the   very   sight   of   her. “ stop   looking   so   guilty, ” he   begs,   body   lifting   away   from   the   chair   he's   been   all   but   glued   to   for   the   last   hour. “ when   has   rose   ever   cared   about   me   and   you,   hm ? ‘s   not   like   she’s   going   to   storm   the   palace   over   you   being   here. ” at   least,   she   wouldn't   have   a   week   ago — what's   left   to   be   said   about   her   public   feelings   towards   castle   and   queenie   hiding   away   together   has   been   kept   under   lock   and   key   since   the   day   she   walked   in   on   castle's   lips   hovering   ever   so   close   to   queenie's   own,   though   castle's   been   lucky   enough   to   be   granted   her   approval   behind   closed   doors.   all   that   remains   is   convincing   queenie   of   the   same — needless   to   say,   he's   faced   easier   quests in his lifetime. “ she   loves   you — what   happened   last   week   didn't   change   that.   please   come   inside. ”

∘ ˚ Ი𐑼 . ◟ “ hello,   it   is   i,   kim   daeyeon. ”   he   tops   it   off   with   his   prettiest   smile,   as   if   that   at   all   negates   how   uninvited   he   is.   he   at   least   has   the   decency   to   nudge   the   door   shut   behind   him.   “ ei   asked   me   to   come   and   charm   you   into   a   better   mood   ...   i'm   guessing   you   and   sangwon   fought   again   ? ”

“ it's   always   you. ” there's   no   heat   behind   kyungjun's   tone,   not   this   time,   but   his   eyes   are   dull   when   they   lift   to   rest   on   the   man   lingering   in   his   doorway. “ i   told   him   to   mind   his   business. ” and   it's   no   surprise,   not   really,   that   the   command   wouldn't   stick — their   teammates   never   have   known   how   to   keep   their   mouths   shut,   after   all — but   irritation   creeps   up   his   spine   nonetheless,   shoulders   tensing   with   the   pressure   that   daeyeon   applies. “ ‘s   nothing.   just … sangwon   being   fuckin’   sangwon.   'm   used   to   it — no   charm   required. ”

∘ ˚ Ი𐑼 . ◟ he   isn't   hoping   to   find   her,   but   he's   ultimately   less   than   surprised   to.   junhee   wouldn't   have   kindly   pointed   him   in   this   direction   if   he   wasn't   hoping   for   some   divine   intervention   ⸻   why   the   fuck   he   can't   talk   to   his   own   girlfriend   (   or   whatever   they   are   )   is   far   and   beyond   gyeongjun's   pay   grade.   he   stands   in   the   doorway   of   the   office,   eyes   settled   on   silhouette   he   can   barely   make   out   behind   the   curve   of   the   computer   chair   ⎯   takes   him   a   long   second   to   tear   his   eyes   away.   he   works   his   jaw   a   bit,   caught   stiff   between   walking   right   back   out   and   addressing   the   problem   while   he's   here.   ...   fuck   it.   “ if   you   think   staring   at   those   monitors   is   gonna   change   anything,   you're   delusional.   go   to   bed. ”

for   what   it's   worth,   yunseo   shoulders   don't   jump   with   the   sound   of   him,   her   body   far   too   well   acclimated   to   his   presence   to   cower   with   fear   any   longer. “ you   think   everything   i   do   is   delusional, ” she   calls   back,   soft   despite   the   intrusion,   casual   despite   the   deep-seated   distrust   that   still   clings   to   her   bones — idly,   she   decides   that   she   trusts   him   not   to   care   enough   to   pick   up   on   the   falsity   that   lies   below.   it   takes   her   a   moment   to   gather   the   courage   to   turn   back   to   him,   though   her   eyes   surely   linger   the   very   moment   they   settle   on   his   own   gaze. “ i   couldn't   sleep. ” and   it's   not   an   explanation   that   she   owes   him,   not   by   a   mile — still,   she   flashes   him   a   tired   smile,   head   tipping   towards   the   screens. “ i'm   not   exactly   overflowing   with   other   ways   to   pass   the   time,   gyeongjun-ah. ”

∘ ˚ Ი𐑼 . ◟ his   palm   feels   warmer   with   diego's   hand   in   it.   feels   like   something   has   finally   settled   into   itself   and   he's   finally   home   in   a   way   he   didn't   know   that   he   wasn't   before.   he'd   miss   the   gestalt   of   the   other's   response   if   he   were   capable   of   doing   anything   but   tuning   into   his   every   word   and   movement.   the   pads   of   his   fingers   press   into   the   hollow   spaces   between   diego's   knuckles,   imprinting   himself   there.     “ lucky   us   that   we   get   to   experience   her   cuteness.   imagine   if   we   had   to   suffer   the   afterlife   without   her   ill   -   timed   gossip   and   everlasting   smile. ”     it   deserves   to   be   said   that   there   are   only   so   many   people   who'd   get   this   fond   voice   out   of   him   :   just   esmae   and   the   man   sitting   beside   him.   it's   the   latter   that   has   him   feeling   lighter   than   air   at   the   moment,   his   grin   stretching   irreverently   and   without   reason.     “ don't   worry,   hot   stuff,   i'd   never   let   her   kill   you   a   second   time.   i'd   throw   leo   at   her   first.   he'd   take   much   longer   to   kill   than   you   would.   that   should   buy   us   some   time. ”

there's     desire     on     the     tip     of     his     tongue,     all     but     begging     to     spill     across     the     pretty     upturn     of     hanbin's     lips.     it     takes     a     moment,     diego     notes,     for     him     to     draw     himself     out     of     it,     gaze     lingering     on     the     dull     shine     of     the     pink     skin. “ can't, ” he     murmurs     after     a     moment,     only     mildly     absent.     his     eyes     flutter     closed,     his     own     smile     softening. “ don't     think     we'd     know     what     to     do     with     ourselves     if     we     didn't     have     her.     we'd     all     go     insane,     like     a     shit     ton     more     cleo's. ” and     it's     true,     he     thinks — esmae     is     their     light     in     the     darkest     of     nights,     that's     no     secret,     it     only     stands     to     reason     that     their     peace     of     mind     hinges     on     her     existence,     too.     he     doesn't     linger     on     the     thought     for     long — can't     when     hanbin     throws     out     threat     after     mouthwatering     threat. “ you     know,     you're     kind     of     hot     when     you're     throwing     a     living     under     the     bus     for     me, ” he     muses,     thumb     sweeping     across     the     back     of     hanbin's     hand. “ think     max     might     have     an     issue     or     two     with     it,     though.     he's     still     so     attached. ”

∘ ˚ Ი𐑼 . ◟ he   very   openly   groans   the   second   she   opens   her   mouth   ⎯   sue   him,   he's   past   the   stage   of   being   scared   off   by   her   moods.     “ queenie,   i   swear   if   you   start   talking   about   your   ex   again,   i'm   going   to   kill   myself   a   second   time. ”     a   joke   that   he's   careful   not   to   make   in   esmae's   presence,   mind   you.   he   even   checks   over   his   shoulder   to   make   sure   she's   nowhere   in   the   room   before   redirecting   his   eyes   back   to   the   other.   in   the   blink   of   an   eye,   he's   grinning,   stepping   forward   to   back   her   against   the   wall   and   capturing   her   lips   for   himself.     “ it's   a   huge   mood   killer   when   you   do   that,   you   know   that,   right   ? ”     he   asks   in   between   chaste,   teasing   kisses.

not   for   the   first   time,   cleo   finds   herself   absolutely   melting   into   the   press   of   his   body   against   her   own,   freshly   manicured   fingers   burying   themselves   in   the   depths   of   his   hair   as   she   hums   into   his   mouth. “ like   you've   never   killed   the   mood, ” she   fires   back,   just   a   breath   away.   despite   her   better   judgement,   she   leans   in   for   more,   taking   care   to   sink   her   teeth   into   the   flesh   of   his   bottom   lip   before   she's   pressing   a   hand   to   his   chest   and   shoving. “ you   should   be   happy   i'm   talking   to   you   in   the   first   place,   be   it   about   my   ex   or   not.   it's   hardly   my   fault   he   had   the   guts   to   show   up   here   again. ”

∘ ˚ Ი𐑼 . ◟ he   replaces   the   graze   of   his   lips   with   the   warmth   of   his   palm   cupping   diego's   cheek,   thumb   brushing   against   skin.   it's   always   strange   to   touch   someone   like   himself   ;   someone   who   walks   in   the   past   tense,   their   existence   a   short   chapter   in   a   closed   book.   the   warmth   is   there,   but   half   of   the   time,   hanbin   is   convinced   he's   tricked   himself   into   feeling   it.   “ mm,   she   does.   and   it   never   gets   any   less   cute. ”   he   lingers   for   a   little   longer,   thumb   tasting   flesh   for   another   stolen   moment   before   he   removes   his   hand   and   falls   into   the   seat   beside   him,   arm   sliding   around   his   shoulders.   he   lifts   a   brow   as   diego   recounts   cleo's   latest   entry   in   her   novel   -   length   series   of   upsets.   “   .   .   .   she   does   know   she's   dead,   right   ?   and   well   past   the   stage   of   him   being   her   problem   or   the   other   way   around   ?   has   anyone   told   her   ? ”

it's   the   weight   of   an   arm   around   his   shoulders   that   forces   diego   into   relaxing,   his   body   damn   near   melting   into   the   warmth   of   hanbin's   side   as   a   soft   laugh   tumbles   from   between   his   lips. “ no,   it   doesn't, ” he   murmurs,   hand   lifting   to   meet   the   one   that   dangles   over   his   chest.   it's   second   nature   to   slide   his   fingers   in   between   hanbin's,   their   palms   pressed   together   tightly. “ somebody   had   to   have   cut   some   sort   of   deal   with,   like — every   devil   variant   out   there   about   her   being   the   cutest   thing   in   the   afterlife.   there's   no   way   it's   all   natural. ” except,   he   supposes,   if   there   was   anybody   in   this   world,   alive   or   otherwise,   who   was   built   to   be   angelically   adorable   in   all   walks   of   life,   esmae   bangura   was   certain   to   be   it.   fondness   floods   his   chest   with   the   thought,   and   he   takes   a   moment   to   press   further   into   hanbin   as   the   warmth   of   it   settles.   it's   only   when   hanbin   draws   up   the   question   of   cleo's   existence   that   diego's   head   lifts   once   more,   teeth   sinking   into   his   bottom   lip   as   he   shakes   his   head. “ you   think   i   was   going   to   be   the   one   who   reminded   her   of   that ? ” he   presses,   nudging   his   elbow   into   the   other's   side. “ i'm   not   trying   to   die   a   second   time,   babe,   i   value   my   time   with   you   too   much   to   start   over. ”
