as an actual book reader, i read the adventures of huckleberry finn long before the pitt came out.

obviously, hearing the reference, i was mega excited. so as i started shipping hucklerobby more and more, i kept thinking on any possible links between the book and the ship.

now, huckleberry’s love interest is mary jane wilkins. a red-headed woman, much like amy.

an article from 1948 states the homoerotic nature of huckleberry and jims relationship.

instead of traditional romance or sexual development, the novel explores themes of gender performance, intense homosocial male bonding; seen as homoerotic, such as the ship we all love.

hucklerobby may never become canon, but little references like these can be really important to decipher the relationship between michael robinavitch and dennis whitaker.

hucklerobby near the end of robby’s sabbatical

whitaker had been finding nights alone boring for the last two and a half months. usually he’d spend them with trinity, doing what she wanted. dennis missed his routine of pretending to hate doing face masks and watching the sopranos with her. she must think he’s relieved to get away from it all.

dennis was staring at the ceiling, urging himself to sleep, when his phone began frantically buzzing itself off the dresser. he hesitated to pick it up, but saw robby’s contact douse the screen. whitaker pressed the phone up to his ear and was met with a quiet sob. “den?” he was fully awake now. “yes? what is it? what’s wrong? are you okay?” a humourless laugh left robby. “i uh, i totalled my bike.” “are you okay? where are you?” sweat dripped down whitakers forehead. “that doesn’t matter. i got you souvenirs everywhere i went and now they’re all gone.” robby’s voice broke. “mike, where are you?” dennis pushed. “i’m just outside of pittsburgh, on the west side of it all. the tow truck will-” “i’m coming to get you.” whitaker grabbed his keys and sprinted to his car, throwing a t shirt over his bare chest.

dennis hung up the phone and did the 25 minute drive in 12. he saw robby speaking to the tow operator and parked his car in the middle of the empty road, his legs moving faster than he ever has, reaching robby as the tow operator walked away. he began patting robby’s limbs while repeating, “are you alright?” over and over.

after robby had repeated yes to every single repeat from dennis, he pulled him into a tight hug. over robby’s shoulder, he could see magnets all scattered over the road, most broken.

robby pulled away but held dennis’ hips close. “i missed you.” he said, suddenly close. “i missed you too.”

dennis leaned in for a kiss and their lips met for a brief moment. when they pulled away, whitaker walked behind where robby was stood. “most of these are still salvageable with hot glue.” he said, picking a singular magnet from the floor.

yall plead for complex characters until he’s actually complex.

he projecting his own self hatred and insecurities onto his staff which is obviously not good, but the entire of season 2 was revolved around robby’s last day before his sabbatical, which was mainly planned to kill himself.

robby was clearly unwell throughout the whole show, adamsons death anniversary adding some stress to the pittfest shooting, and completely breaking down in pedes. robby denies the whole incident to whitaker, says it was nothing.

you don’t understand robby until you’re mentally ill. you try to act so strong and when someone calls you out for not doing so you completely lash out at the thought that something might be wrong with you. he eventually admits that he is not okay, but it took him an entire shift to do so, if we don’t count the possible allegations of his mental illness before that shift that we were unable to see.

i think in s3 of the pitt someone will clock robby’s shit and say something like “everyone was so much more relaxed when they realised that’s you weren’t there to walk on eggshells around” and i have a feeling it’s gonna be baran al-hashimi or someone totally unexpected like… oh no… what if it’s whitaker… or WORSE. OR ABBOT??
