jake hadn't meant to stay out as long as he did. it hadn't been for any particular reason, either. he'd wandered through convenience stores without buying much of anything, sat on a bench overlooking the river until the evening air became cold enough to make him pull the sleeves of his hoodie over his hands, and walked far enough that his legs ached more than his thoughts did. anything to keep from going back to the dorm where everything felt just a little too quiet whenever everyone settled in for the night.

the front door clicked shut behind him as carefully as he could manage. shoes slipped off near the entrance before he padded farther inside, expecting most of the lights to be off by now. his phone disappeared into his pocket, fingers rubbing absentmindedly over the edge of the case while he let out a slow breath.

every bit of him felt off. maybe it was exhaustion. maybe it was the awkward silence that had followed him out of the company building earlier. maybe it was neither. he didn't bother trying to sort through it.

his gaze drifted through the living room before finally settling on the familiar figure still awake. for a brief second, something almost apologetic crossed his face before it disappeared just as quickly beneath the tired expression he'd been wearing for weeks.

"you're still up?" his voice stayed quieter than usual as he leaned against the doorway instead of moving any farther inside. "couldn't sleep?" @farmingaura

Sleep had become inconsistent lately. Some nights it came easily. Others, his mind refused to shut off, circling the same thoughts until dawn threatened the horizon. Tonight had been one of those nights. The television played on low volume more for background noise than entertainment, an untouched mug of tea sitting on the coffee table after it'd long since gone cold. He'd figured Jake just needed time to cool off. After everything that had happened earlier, the argument with Ni-ki, the tension that seemed to cling to every conversation lately, it hadn't felt right chasing after him. Jake wasn't the type to appreciate someone hovering when he was upset. If anything, trying to force a conversation would've only made him shut down more. So Sunghoon stayed behind, hoping a few hours away from everyone would do Jake some good.

Truthfully, he wasn't sure it had done any of them much good. The dorm had felt...off for weeks now. Conversations died quicker than they used to. Laughs didn't linger as long. Even when everyone was together, it felt like they were standing on opposite sides of an invisible line, each carrying frustrations they either couldn't or wouldn't put into words. The soft click of the front door pulled Sunghoon's attention away from the muted screen. His eyes lifted, finding Jake in the doorway. There was a noticeable pause before he reached for the remote, switching the television off entirely.

"Yeah..." His answer came simply. "Something like that." Sunghoon studied him for a moment, taking in the tired look that hadn't really left Jake's face in weeks. It was becoming familiar. Everyone was carrying something these days. Some were just worse at hiding it than others. "You? You doing any better?" he asked carefully "Or is it still bothering you?"

Beep. Wrong. Beep. Wrong again.

Eyes widening as the door answered with another beep in utter disagreement. Instead of admitting defeat, now deciding to lean beside the wall right next to the door. This is no longer a lockout situation. This is security work now. Important. Someone had to guard the practice room. Someone had to stand here with a bag full of convenience store snacks and suspiciously avoid eye contact with the keypad.

Someone, meaning, apparently her.

❝ I'm not locked out. ❞ Announced to absolutely no one. That's just between the hallway, the door and her. ❝ I'm on duty. ❞

Practice had ended nearly three hours ago. Sunghoon had already tackled a couple of hours in the gym to maintain his muscles, showered, and now was walking the halls of HYBE with his duffel bag around his shoulder. Hands in pockets, he was focused on the ground as he walked. Barely paying attention to those around him.

His ears caught a voice that pulled him from zoning out. "Hm? Duty? You have a job as security?" He frowns, stopping just a few steps away from her.
