2/5/16 St. Louis had a Fashion show that was one of its kind. Dangerous Curves Fashion Show was put on by Alisha Phipps. I asked her how she came up with the idea, due to it being needed. She stated, “This was something that I have been wanting to do for a while. I am just a curvy girl who was fed up with fashion. I had shopped the local major stores for plus size women and when I would go to events there would always be someone in my outfit or dress. Because my curves are different, finding a great fit was a miracle. I want to dress that’s nice and looks fabulous, but the stores were having the same items, the material was stiff, the prints were standard and the price was ridiculous.

  I basically wanted to give the local designers and boutiques that cater to the plus sized woman a platform here in St. Louis. the other side of my vision is the size shaming. Assuming plus size women are unhealthy, not beautiful, or worthy to be models are a big driving force. The selection of my models was so different, I recruited these women from the malls, functions, restaurants, and squad cars. Dangerous curves represents the everyday Midwest curvy woman.”

Christian Micheal is a native Kansas City, Missouri Designer that creates men’s custom pieces. His respected designs have been featured in Kansas City Fashion Week and Omaha Fashion Week. When meeting with Christian at the Gent! St. Louis Men’s Designer Showcase, I had to ask a few questions to ask him because I am in love with his work.

What was your inspiration to create your pieces?

“The first few collections I created were very traditional runway to retail, I felt like I almost had to prove my worth as a real designer before I can sell something really artsy and this is extremely artsy and it’s showing something you don’t see very much in menswear. I wanted to show something different and non-traditional and my growth as a designer. “

What is your background in design?

“I’m a self-taught designer, I bought my first sewing machine eight years ago and taught myself how to sew. It took about four years before I started to produce anything and put my name on it, but I’ve been showing my work across the Midwest since. “
