Barzy and this song 😮💨
Me again! I also love the idea that Mat literally changed for you bc he loved you so much. I think he can be a bit of a player especially when it comes to girls.
Like one night after you’ve been dating for a while you’re just hanging out eating dinner or something at home and he is laughing at something you said and just like casually drops “I swear you’re the love of my life” and leaves reader speechless,
I swear you’re the love of my life
Pairing: Mat Barzal x actress!fem!reader

You’re stretched out across the couch, head on his chest, scrolling through your phone while he absentmindedly plays with the ends of your hair. The TV’s on, but neither of you are actually watching. It’s one of those quiet nights where the world feels small in a good way.
Mat’s legs are propped on the coffee table, socks mismatched because of course they are. Every few minutes he laughs at something you show him, usually something stupid.
“Look at this,” you say, shoving your phone up toward his face. “This dog can’t figure out how stairs work.”
He squints. “Honestly? I relate.”
“You relate to a dog panicking over gravity?”
“I panic over gravity daily,” he says, dead serious.
You snort. “That explains a lot.”
He pokes your side. You slap his hand away. The usual.
You toss your phone aside and shift, your chin resting on his chest so you can look up at him. “Your hair is getting long.”
“You say that every week.”
“Yeah, because you ignore me every week.”
He smirks, brushing your hair back behind your ear. “You like it long.”
You pretend to consider. “I like it when you actually use shampoo.”
“Y/N.”
“What? You go through bottles at glacial speed.”
He rolls his eyes, pulling you up a little so your body settles more comfortably against his. One of his hands slides under the hem of your shirt, palm warm on your waist, soft, familiar, nothing suggestive. Just touch because he likes having you close.
For a while, it’s quiet, the kind of silence you only get with someone you trust down to the bone. You close your eyes, listening to his heartbeat under your ear.
Mat breaks the silence first. “You know, the guys keep giving me shit.”
You don’t move. “About what?”
“Being obsessed with you,” he says casually. “They keep saying I’ve gone soft.”
You crack an eye open. “Well… yeah.”
He scoffs. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“You used to flirt with anything that breathed. Now your biggest thrill is holding my hand in public.”
He snorts, brushing his thumb up and down your side. “Okay, first of all, rude. Second of all, holding your hand is thrilling. I get excited.”
“Shut up,” you giggle.
“I do,” he insists, not joking at all. “I get stupidly happy about it. Like an idiot. It’s embarrassing.”
Your smile softens, quieter now. “You’re not embarrassed.”
“No,” he admits. “Not even a little.”
Another quiet stretch. His fingers trace patterns on your back. Somewhere underneath the teasing and the calm, you feel his energy shift, a subtle, warm buzz under your skin. You lift your head, just slightly.
He’s already looking at you.
And he gets that look, the soft one. The one he doesn’t use on anyone else. The one that makes your stomach go hot and fluttery, like you’re eighteen again and falling for someone dangerous.
“What,” you whisper, suddenly shy.
He shrugs a little, but he doesn’t look away. “Nothing.”
“That’s not nothing.”
His hand slides up your spine, slow and steady. “Just thinking.”
“About?”
“You,” he says, as if that’s obvious.
“Me doing what?”
He hesitates, not nervous, just honest, picking his words with care.
“Just… how different my life feels with you. How good it feels.” His voice is soft, almost conversational. “How fucking lucky I got.”
You freeze at the sincerity, not because it’s too much, but because it always sneaks up on you. Mat’s not afraid of being honest with you. It’s one of the million reasons you love him.
He exhales, brushing his nose lightly against your forehead in this unbearably gentle way. “I swear you’re the love of my life.”
It’s not dramatic. Not performed.
Just truth, easy and quiet and devastating.
Your breath catches. “Mat.”
“Hm?”
“You can’t just drop that on me like that.”
He smiles, not smirking, not teasing. Just warm. Full. Real. “Why not? It’s true.”
You swallow, your fingers curling lightly into his shirt. “It’s a lot.”
“It’s the simplest thing I’ve ever said,” he murmurs, leaning up to kiss your cheek, slow and soft. “You know it. I know it.”
Your chest goes warm in that way that makes your eyes feel tight. Not sad, just overwhelmed. Loved in a way that still feels new no matter how many times he does it.
You whisper into his shirt, “You’re the love of my life too.”
His hand tightens around your waist just slightly, not pulling you closer, just holding you like he wants the words to sink into him.
“Good,” he says softly, brushing his lips against your hairline. “I was gonna be really annoyed if I was the only one.”
You laugh, muffled against him. “Shut up.”
He smiles into your hair. “Never.”
You settle back on his chest, legs tangled, his hand steady on your hip. The TV drones on in the background. His thumb strokes lazy circles against your skin.
And you stay like that, no big moment, no dramatic spark, just comfort, just warmth, just love curling up quietly around the both of you.
Exactly the way it feels with him.
Mat x actress reader on family skate day. Everyone is a little star struck but Mat is too smitten to care, he’s just happy she’s there.

You should not be here.
That’s your first coherent thought as you step out onto the ice at UBS Arena, gripping the boards like they personally owe you money.
Family skate day.
You said yes because you love him. Because he asked like it mattered. Because he’d looked at you over breakfast and said, “Come skate with me. Please,” in that soft, hopeful way that makes you stupid.
You forgot one critical detail.
You cannot skate for shit.
“Babe,” you hiss, legs shaking violently beneath you, “why is the ice moving.”
“It’s not moving,” Mat laughs, already perfectly steady beside you like he was born on frozen water. Which, honestly, he kind of was.
“Liar.”
He reaches for your hands. You grab onto him immediately, nearly taking him down with you.
Somewhere behind you, you hear a snort.
You glance over your shoulder and immediately wish you hadn’t.
The rest of the Islanders are scattered across the ice with their families. Anders Lee is effortlessly pushing his daughter in one of those little skate trainers while his wife, Grace, chats with a couple of the other wives. Casy Cazika is doing lazy circles with his kids, looking annoyingly stable. Anthony Duclair is laughing with someone near center ice.
And now they are all looking at you.
You smile like a pageant contestant barely surviving a wardrobe malfunction.
You can feel it , the curiosity. The recognition. The oh my god that’s her.
You lean into Mat. “Why are they staring?”
“They’re not staring.”
“They’re absolutely staring.”
He kisses your temple like that solves it. “You’re fine.”
You are not fine.
You take one tentative step.
Your ankle folds like it’s made of overcooked pasta.
“OH FUCK.”
Mat catches you mid-collapse, arms wrapping around your waist before you can eat ice in front of half the organization.
“You’ve gotta bend your knees,” he says, trying not to laugh.
“I am bending them.”
“You’re locking them.”
“I am emotionally locking them because I’m terrified.”
He actually laughs this time, loud and unfiltered. The sound echoes around the rink and a few heads turn again, but not in a weird way. More in a Barzy’s whipped way.
You narrow your eyes at him. “If I die on this ice, you’re explaining it to my publicist.”
“You’re not going to die.”
“I don’t know that.”
He skates backward slowly, holding both your hands, guiding you forward inch by inch. You wobble violently.
“You’re doing great,” he says.
“I look like a baby deer that just learned about gravity.”
“You look hot.”
You blink at him. “Be serious.”
“I am.”
“You are clinically deranged.”
He grins at you like you’re the only person in the building. Like the NHL does not exist. Like the cameras don’t. Like Anders Lee is not literally ten feet away watching this unfold.
Someone skates by and says, “Careful, Barzy,” under their breath.
You feel your face heat.
“You see?” you whisper. “They think I’m going to break you.”
“You won’t.”
“I almost did just now.”
“You’re tiny.”
“That’s insulting.”
He shrugs. “You’re small and mean.”
“Mean?”
“You called the ice a moving hazard.”
“It is.”
You attempt another glide.
It goes okay for three seconds.
Then your foot shoots sideways and you instinctively cling to him, both arms around his neck. Your bodies collide chest to chest. You are one bad breath away from horizontal.
Mat steadies you easily, hands firm at your hips.
There’s a very distinct moment where you realize how this looks.
Hockey player boyfriend. Ice rink. You practically in his arms.
You lean in, murmur under your breath, “If you drop me, I swear to God I will never do that thing you like again.”
He chokes.
“You’re insane,” he mutters.
“You love it.”
He doesn’t even argue.
A couple of the wives skate closer. Grace smiles warmly. “You’re brave.”
“Brave is not the word I would use,” you say, clinging to Mat like a flotation device.
“You get used to it,” she says kindly.
You nod like that’s encouraging.
Mat looks down at you. “Want me to just push you?”
“That sounds aggressive.”
“I’ll hold you.”
“You are holding me.”
He rolls his eyes but his smile is soft.
Eventually you manage something that resembles forward movement without shrieking. It’s shaky. It’s chaotic. But it’s happening.
Mat skates beside you the entire time, one hand hovering at your lower back, ready. Not embarrassed. Not distracted. Just… proud.
You notice it when Beauvillier skates by and chirps something you can’t hear. Mat barely reacts. Just tightens his grip on your hand and keeps going.
He doesn’t care that you’re wobbly. Doesn’t care that you’re famous. Doesn’t care that half the team is quietly amused.
He’s just happy you’re there.
At one point you do actually fall.
It’s dramatic. A full sit-down on the ice with a sharp yelp and a very loud, “FUCK.”
The entire rink goes quiet for half a second.
Mat is on his knees in front of you immediately, hands on your arms. “You okay?”
“I hate this sport.”
He laughs so hard he has to brace himself on the ice.
You glare at him from your frozen seat. “Help me up, you dick.”
He pulls you up carefully, brushing ice off your leggings, hands lingering maybe a second longer than necessary.
“Worth it?” you ask, breathless.
“Yeah,” he says instantly.
Your heart does something stupid and soft.
You roll your eyes to hide it. “You’re so annoying.”
“Come here.”
He pulls you back against him, skates you slowly in a wide circle, your back against his chest this time. You can’t really move, but you don’t have to. He guides you.
Your head tilts back to look at him. He looks so content it almost makes you emotional.
“You’re really happy I came,” you say quietly.
“Yeah,” he says. No hesitation.
There are kids skating past. Teammates laughing. The rink smells like cold air and rubber and coffee from the stands.
You’re terrible at skating.
You’re holding onto him like your life depends on it.
And he looks like he won something anyway.
“Next time,” you say, “we’re doing something I’m good at.”
“What’s that?”
You smirk. “You know.”
He almost trips over his own skate.
And for the first time all afternoon, you’re the stable one.
