Project 7 Synopsis

My final portfolio has come a long way. The typeface used is ITC Avant Garde after considering some including Helvetica and Futura. The main reason I chose Avant Garde is because I like their characteristics that look elegant and somehow make connection with my entire works from project 1 to project 6. For the cover of my book, I did not plan for it but I ended up with that as I trying to work with my project 3 pattern and I can said it really look good. I only using green for my book as I try to limited the color used to make it look more formal.

Statement of Intent (Project 7)

For this project we need to create a portfolio book consisting our all previous project in class  throughout the semester. I plan to create a simple layout but in some way connect the entire book. I want this book to reflect my self as designer as well giving chance to people to look at my works.

Project 6 synopsis

For this project we are asked to use photo as the point of departure to develop a grid based on the composition of that photo. 

As a starter, I begin by analyse some photos that look interesting based on their composition. I select 4 photos for sketches which their composition are totally different from one another. I start to layout and make grid for every photos. Based on the layout and grid I place the title that I think suitable and effective.

The first group critique we begin narrowing ideas and eliminate some ideas that we think will not work so effective then we pin up our best sketch for individual critique.

I choose the Meier’s stair as my photo to work with because I think it’s composition is totally different and unique among the photos given and there's none of classmate use that photo.

In Photoshop, I started  by play around with the tone and gradient and the photo has a great and unique shadow. I also solarize the image but as I print it on paper it look too dark.

Individual critique, suggestions are mainly about the Title and letter sizes. Some mention about the color that it look nice but I feel it is too dark and need to be refined.

The hardest part of this project for me is to make the title. I want the type to look exactly like the curvelinear composition of the mirror in the photo. I did a lot of thing with the title but finally I decide to extend some points of the letter to match the composition. And because of that I change my title as my old title was too long. The typefaces use is Stencil STD as I believe this typeface attract attention very well. Other typeface use is Nueva Std for the infos in the photo. 

Overall, this project really touch about composition,type and delivering message. Its important to create something that attract attention within a few second and I feel that my poster not really apply that principle.

Project Statement 3

After selecting the best among the sketches I begin working in the Photoshop and Illustrator, I intend to make my poster look like illustration based by editing the image in Photoshop but I afraid I go too far so I decide to make just several adjustment. For the individual critique I bring the bottom poster and I got a lot of suggestion to make it better. I really struggling with the title to make it look alike in my sketch.

Statement 2 (Sketches)

I begin by selecting photos that I think interesting, For each photos I analyse their composition based on their shape,lines,tone,contrast and so on then I start to sketch the position of the title. For the sketch I still not decide what my title.

Project 6: Initial Statement

For this project, we required to create a poster for architecture exhibition. This poster need to be function and draw audience attention and encourage them to seek the details.

Project 5 Synopsis

I admit, I am having fun working this project. I did two different animation. Both of my animation I used my type logo and pictograph. For the first one I tried to limit the usage of color which I only play with black and white for the entire animation. 

For this project, I have to admit that the most difficult part is adjust things I had done. For instance I once tried to change the transition of my animation and it destroy everything after the transition. So I had to completely start over on that. Another issue is to matching sound with my animation. I tried very hard to my animation and the sound so that the fit well together. 

For my 1st animation, Its totally different from the one from my critique as change and develop based on the suggestion from the critique. I tried to use everything that offer in Flash in my animation. For example, mask,guide,classic ,shape and motion tween. Everything is in it. For this animation I want it to look a bit formal.

For the second animation, Its quite similar but I did a lot of transition, play around with color to match it with the background sound. 

Overall, I really like this project as it exposed me to a new level of graphic design which is making animation. I admit it a little time consuming as lot works need to be done in order to produce a smooth and good animation.

I intend to make my animation look formal and professional, I am using my type logo and my pictograph and I had several idea of my animation. After some discussion and critiques, I chose my last idea which is the bottom one to work in the Flash because there is more formal and interesting. I admit this part of assignment really help me a lot in generating ideas and develop sequences so that it gonna be easy while working in Flash.

Project 5: Initial Statement

I am really looking forward to work with Flash or motion graphic. I hope this project will develop my skill in creating animation or motion logos as well skills related to time based processes and the development of a time-based visual narrative. This project is totally new and different from previous ones.

Project 4 synopsis

I never thought that this project could be so difficult but I really enjoyed it as I began to develop my skills in analyzing and observing relation, making transition from one images to another and  my presentation skills.

I began this project by selecting photos from several site. To make it safe I took a lot of photos about hundred of them so that I can replace them if there are no rhythmic transition. After selecting images I place all of them on the artboard  in Indesign.Then the hardest part begin, as I need to arrange them. It took me few days to analyze the composition of every images.

I admit that my first sequence was quite failed as I only focused on only certain part to join the two images. Thank for my group as in critique session they gave suggestion to improve my work. It really fall behind as I miss the one-o-one critique session because I didn’t know how to improve my work. On last working day in class I received some comment from Professor Fender on how to improved my sequence. 

Basically, my final work explored  progression and rhythm through the integration of form and texture which is the criteria of this project. There are many ways to design the rhythmic visual progression of the book and I tried to maximized  them during working on this project.

Final sequence.

Toward the end of this project, I tried to make sure that all transition are well arranged and not repeated. During the last work day in class, I received some guides and help from Professor Fender on how to make my sequences better and he suggest me to replace some of the images that seems not related or failed to make connection.

As I continued working on my sequences, I found out that some of the images not works well, so I decided to replace some new images. After the critique session, I realized theres a lot to be improved for my sequences. Instead of focusing on only one part of the image I need to consider the whole image’s composition to make a good transition. The picture above is my refined version after the first critique.

As I completed collecting wide range of black and white photography, I began to make connection from one picture to another by observing their lines, value, tones and many things so that there are smooth flow. The picture above is my preliminary sequences.

Project 4 statement

For this project we are required to make connection between black and white images to make a smooth flow from one page to another.The goal is to ensure the viewer are leaded from one page to the next in a logical visual fashion.
