❝ “nor will they spare my children.” [queen alicent] declared. “aegon and his brothers are the king's trueborn sons, with a better claim than [rhaenyra's] brood of bastards. daemon will find some pretext to put them all to death. even helaena and her little ones.” ❞

alicent has taken over my brain AND this blog so like
what if….
i moved her to her own blog
Every Kösem Sultan Outfit: 93/∞
alicent and criston’s relationship is intriguing to me as an example of the typical medieval chivalric knight and his lady dynamic but alicent would never give him any reason to believe that it could be anything more than platonic. aside from the whole morality argument, the futures of her children will always be first in her heart and she would never let herself indulge in personal temptation if it meant endangering their birthrights. the slightest whiff of impropriety surrounding her could raise questions about her children’ legitimacy and she’s simply not going to even consider taking that risk
again that same fear was to blame—ignoble & sacrilegious, making it almost impossible for him to even want to believe that this was indeed the only path leading to anything akin to victory. gods knew an even more heinous part of him had wished for it to be untrue, for mother to be proven wrong so that none of this would have to happen ...
he should have known better than that.
he should have stopped doubting mother's foresight after all that happened at driftmark.
who else would have to bleed for aegon to finally dare to believe ? how many more times would his loved ones have to be on the receiving end of pain & humiliation as aegon's head remained in the sand all because he was too afraid to believe they would never be safe whether they decided to unsheathe their own blades or not ?
if ruin awaited them all in any case ... perhaps marching towards it with sword & lance would be more befitting, even if the hands wielding them trembled still.
& so he listened with renewed intent, heart calmed with the knowledge that his mother's love was as insistent as his fear—if not more.
"the council. shall i replace the members, dismiss the ones who served my—my father ?" the word rotted on his tongue like that wretched wraith of a man had, his mouth twitching with unease.
"tell me which ones displease you and we shan't see them again." and he meant it, her kingling. for she would always have a seat in his council, never to be talked over again by rotten men. never to be made to feel helpless & bereft of allies again for speaking the truth.
but then—why was she advising him deceit ?
"but i ... i want them to know when they're vexing me, so that they may remedy it," he mused with a slightly questioning tone, eager to understand even if it was a disgruntling notion. eager to believe even if the fear persisted.
sword & lance, he thought then.
his hands were made for the sword & lance.
"mother, i care little for lies and masks. i won't let them see me weep, but i won't smile for them either. not if they mean to keep me blind and mellow like their former king."
approval brightens the dowager queen's amber gaze as her son seemingly pivots his mind towards the matter of his reign. 'we must needs start as we mean to go on and that means surrounding you with the very best advisors the realm has to offer. your grandsire has a deft touch with such things and he has suggested to me that some upon your father's coucil should remain. your grandsire has already had the foresight to...deal with beesbury who would otherwise be a thorn in your side.' she has no time or patience to spare for the pedantic monologues of the wheedling beesbury.
men like lyman beesbury had spent much of her husband's reign either talking over her or ignoring her entirely. under her son's reign, they would learn to respect her or be forced to step aside. 'we must keep tyland lannister on the small council and your grandsire should, of course, remain hand of the king. the people will be pleased at the prospect of stability and admire your wisdom for understanding that the realm needs a steady and practiced hand guiding it.'
the somber demeanor of practicality is softened by a wry curve of her lips as she considers her son's political naivety. she had been in his place once: bewildered by the schemes and deceitful machinations of men but experience had opened her eyes. her son would not suffer the trial by fire as she had, he would have his mother to prepare and guide him. 'because not even a king can force a person to change their nature.'
it was a lesson she doubted her husband had ever learned, particularly where his brother was concerned, and it had been the cause of much of his grief. 'they will pretend to make themselves bend so as to please you but it is far better to disassemble and avoid letting them know your true mind.' a soft exhale as slender dark brows furrow with sympathy, 'a prince has many friends, but a king often has only sycophants.'
out of her four children, it is her eldest who has always seemed to crave validation in the company of others as if he is but a moth gravitating towards a tempting flame. the entire court will throw itself at his feet and she fears the adulation may make him falter and stray from making difficult decisions as all rulers must.
'no one will treat you as they did your father.' her son will be so much more than a simple shadow upon the iron throne, a man who simply bends whichever way the wind blows.
'you will be a beloved ruler once the people realize their good fortune.' and she will have to ensure that there are no malcontents in the city who clamor for rhaenyra, at least not within aegon's earshot. 'and aside from the counsel of myself, your grandsire, and our allies, you have also the company of helaena.' and now there is a sliver of steel within alicent's voice as she speaks of her daughter, her queen. 'she will rule alongside you and the realm will always look fondly on a king who values his queen. be kind to helaena. be patient. this rise in station is not only a great change for you but also for her as well as your brothers. you will need them by your side.'

HOUSE OF THE DRAGON APPRECIATION WEEK: day 4: favorite relationship ↳ ALICENT, AEGON, HELAENA & AEMOND
not to be dramatic but against my will i was exposed to a quote from the hotd s3 press junket where olivia says alicent’s main focus this season will be to protect helaena from her brothers
…who are also alicent’s children
i want 2 die

it's very....interesting (derogatory) to me that the showrunners have made alicent's hightower kin so negligible in terms of her bonds with them and the loyalty they all feel towards one another. like the hightowers are the nucleus of the greens and their love and loyalty for / towards one another is the very reason they even have a faction in the first place and yet hotd has them interact with one another as if they're all in pursuit of their own individual aims and only lukewarm towards one another
