Quinoa salad
Instead of tossing out base of the romaine lettuce I'd eaten last week, I put the root end into into a mason jar. It's been growing nicely since then.
Ok it's been a long time since my last post, but I'm still in the game! I was hit with a major challenge when I injured my foot during my last hike in the beautiful Las Vegas mountains. At first the pain was horrific- I couldn't lift my foot from the floor. But after 48 hours I could walk almost normally, albeit with pain, so I kept up my gym routine on the elliptical trainer. After about a month the pain transformed into painful arch spasms and stinging nerve pain radiating up the ankle. Simply walking out of the gym became difficult. I finally saw a podiatrist who advised that if I continued with any activity that inclined my foot, I would further injure my tendon. He offered cortisone shots for the pain, nighttime braces for both feet to lengthen the tendons, $500 worth of therapy, orthotics and possible major surgery. I said no to the shots, therapy and surgery. I said yes to orthotics and braces. I'm still waiting for the orthotics, but as of last week I've tentatively returned to the elliptical trainer. My foot hurts bu I am not limping after the workout so I'm definitely improving. Unfortunately, after missing so many aerobic workouts my conditioning suffered, so I'm now working my way back to where I was. I must admit that when I stopped working out, I regained a lot of the weight I'd lost. I should have adjusted my diet, but I was so bad about that! My eating habits have been ridiculous, really. I lost my momentum when I got injured, but I refused to drop out of the Biggest Loser contest at work. That contest and my team members kept me going. So, as of this week I'm recommitting to working out and eating a plant-based diet. My foot still hurts so I don't go walking, but I'll continue to use the elliptical trainer as long as long as I can.
Trying Something New
I used to adhere to a raw foods diet. I stopped because of the effort required to keep fresh, perishable foods in the house, among other significant reasons. But I miss those days and am ready to incorporate more raw foods into my menu. I have juiced one meal for the last three days, and feel good about that. I'm not sure right now if I have the mental strength to have green juice for dinner when my family is eating something tempting and aromatic, but I think I will at least try to adjust my meal times so that I can have a late lunch of juice. My problem is I work a very early shift, and waiting 5 hours after I wake up to eat my first meal is a bit challenging. Unfortunately it's too early in the morning to make a racket with my juicer or blender, so no juice for breakfast. I guess that does make lunch the perfect time for juicing! One more thing: I found chia seeds at the local grocery store and bought some on a whim. I tried a tablespoon in a raw-protein shake with yogurt and fruit, but didn't notice anything. I thought it would be all gelatinous and nasty! I look forward to adding some to my green juice.
FAT FOUGHT FIT!
Aching Feet +Too Much to Eat Does Not Equal Defeat
Can't say I will lose any weight for tomorrow's weigh-in, as I enjoyed an all-you-can-eat sushi goodbye dinner for a friend this afternoon. But...thank goodness it was sushi and not something really unhealthy! Plus, I worked out after dinner- only 35 min on the elliptical trainer but it was a good workout. My feet hurt sooooo much. A doctor visit is likely unavoidable soon. My at-work weight loss team moved up to #4 in our city last week. We've heard the winning team is juicing, which we think they won't be able to keep up for 12 weeks. We are doing it slowly, steadily and healthfully. Not that juicing is bad, but 12 weeks? And their team has much less weight to lose than ours. We'll see! Tonight I made a lentil soup with turkey kielbasa. I'll have that tomorrow for lunch- it smells great! I'm always looking for new, easy to make, tasty recipes. I don't normally eat meat other than fowl and fish, but I shook things up this week.
In a weight loss contest, the scale holds all the power. I hate the scale. I'd much prefer to use clothing size, physical comfort and fitness as my methods of measurement. But I face the scale weekly, as well as every time I visit the doctor. (One time I went to get a sliver removed and when the nurse tried to weigh me I refused. I mean, really?)
We weigh in on Thursdays for our work-sponsored Biggest Loser-type contest. Sometimes I overeat on Saturday, after the anxiety of the weigh-in has passed. I know that's a habit I'll need to give up. I overate this weekend, but you know what? I still worked out. Today I did about 80 minutes on the elliptical trainer- 10 more minutes than last week. I also upped the resistance because as I get more fit, the harder I have to work to keep my heart rate up.
This evening my old room mate stopped by. She hadn't seen me in two weeks. The first thing she said was, "are you losing weight!" Now that is more meaningful to me than the scale right now!!
Tried to take a time lapse of my bread baking. Rather amusing. (Taken with GifBoom)
Yay!!!!
I'm sooo relieved! I lost 5 lbs! People at work are noticing that my face looks thinner. But most importantly, when I walk home from work, which is uphill, I'm not gasping for breath! That, for me, is the best reward for my efforts. My FFF# was 185 in mid January. That means I had 185 lbs to lose when I began. My number is now FFF165.8!
Today I got on the scale at the gym, and although it doesn't match the scale being used for our weight loss contest at work, I can tell that I've finally lost some weight. I have had some challenges this week and succumbed to snack foods a couple of times but I haven't given up on myself.
My routine has been to go to the gym 45 min before my teammate is due to join me and do a solo workout. I do my second session with her. Today I did 30 minutes in the elliptical trainer, keeping my heart rate in the cardiovascular workout zone. Then I did some biceps work with 15 lb handheld weights. I can tell they are too light for me, so I'll go up to 20 lbs next time. After my teammate arrived I did 30 more minutes on the elliptical for a total of one hour. And I could've kept going if it werent for my concern about my foot.
So... although my heel hurts right now, I'm proud of my progress in the gym. My clothes are a bit looser and my stamina is improving.
Now its time for some practical goals. One is to be able to walk home from work without breathing heavily. My next is to feel comfortable in a plane seat, as I may need to take a trip this April. My third is to look good at the office Christmas party!
Gotta Focus, to Lose 180 lbs
It's so easy to want to give up with every little obstacle. My Achilles' tendon hurt horribly on Sunday but was better on Tuesday and bearable most of today. Two of my weight loss contest buddies joined me at the gym just now. I did 20 min on the elliptical trainer, which I logged as 3 WW Points, then 30 minutes on the stationary bike, which I logged as 5 Points. I use the built-in Points calculator in the WW app and estimate my effort on the low side to prevent unwelcome surprises. I set the bike to a resistance of 12-14 for much of the workout and went slowly, working the biggest group of muscles. I am good and tired now, and shall sleep well tonight. My foot is hurting, and now my other foot hurts because I've had to favor my heel, but it's all good- I'll be fine. A friend took me to Costco the other day and I bought lots of frozen vegetables and a rotisserie chicken. If you know Costco, you know how good that chicken tastes! Eventually I will migrate to a plant-based diet but I'm enjoying the heck outta that chicken on my salads. Tomorrow is my weigh-in day. If the scale at the gym is accurate, I gained. That makes no sense to me, but since I know my fitness is improving, I'll take comfort in that.
This photo doesn't even look real. I love that I live here and can see this when I go hiking.
My First Workout Injury
Had another hike in the mountains, but this one did me in. It was a steady rise that was too much for me. I quit after one half mile and went back downhill. It was a good workout, but I felt sad to not have gone as far as my walking partner did. I believe that of my 5-member team, I am the least fit. This afternoon I walked 1.5 miles to make up for this morning, but before I left I already felt pain in my right heel. Now, several hours later, I can barely walk. Just lifting my foot is incredibly painful. I believe I've strained my Achilles' tendon. I pray it is all right by Tuesday when I return to work. For now, I'll just have to keep dragging my foot across the floor to get around the house!
I’m not the only one working out today!
What? A Weight Gain?
Dangnabbit, I was feeling positive about this weigh-in! I lost 11 lbs for the first weigh-in last Thursday. Since then I’ve gone hiking, walking, and twice to the gym, and watched what I ate. I gained a lb this week.
I feel bad for my weight loss group since we’re competing with other teams for money. One woman in my group lost 4 lbs and one of the guys lost 2. They were all very encouraging of me, thank goodness.
What will I do differently this week? Well, I will no longer undereat. I’ve been eating far under my points, and not eating the extra 49 we’re allotted. By eating enough, I should do better on the scale. I’m not going to go crazy exercising but I will continue to work on the cardio because cardiovascular health is important to me. I’m tired of being breathless in this hilly town!
I’ve decided that my twitter hash tag will reflect the number of lbs left to lose. I started with 185 lbs to go. That’s a hell of a lot, but seeing it will help motivate me, plus I can easily look back at where I was at any given point in this journey.
So my beginning FFF number was 185. Now it’s #FFF175, if that scale was right (I have some doubts since that first loss was so huge!
Time for a walk!
It's a beginning! Especially since I hate stationary bikes.
