Pop Culture Freaks-Freaks in the Matrix

What I learned in this course of Pop Culture, is that the the Matrix is a metaphor within the mass media, including corporate organization.... where as we the people "created them, gave the life, and then name them persons." In addition, the word "freaks", are flustering by the definition meaning a person appearances or behaviors are unsettling to us and therefore we labeled them as freaks.

one of my favorite phrase written by author.."that we are all freaks within the massive matrix of popular culture", "if we are lucky, we become freaks again when we embrace our inner freak.... reader, let your freak flags fly!" (Dustin Kidd, 2014)

The song Mr. Wendal is from an American hip hop/ rap group called ArrestedDevelopment in in 1992 and was written about the predicament of how we the peoplejudge, stereotype a homeless person on the street; and that he or she (homeless) just anold bum with no knowledge of society. Also, the artist encourages people not to ignorethem just because of their status or how they look, instead to learn from their non-materialistic lifestyles.

“The Message is song released by Grandmaster Flash and the Five Furious. “TheMessage” was the first noticeable hip-hop song to be released thattalks about the lyrical society interpretation. The lyrics of the songportray the detailed description of poverty by presenting the audiencethe living situation of residents in urban city areas. Sugar Hill Recordsreleased it on July 1st 1982. It was also included as a game-in videosuch as Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and also in an animated film HappyFeet. “ The Message was the first hip-hop rap ever included in Rockand Roll Hall of Fame. [4]. The song was the number 5 on greatestsongs of hip-hop musics.

Perspective students

A little word of advice to future students at Temple University who are interesting in Socio Pop Culture, who wants General educational credits, the famous Sociologist majors...I recommend that you have an open mind to the course of Pop Culture and don't have a notion of just getting an 'A' (A grade is good, don't get me wrong) but understand what the professor is expressing in his text/materials.

The concept of lighter skin are being more valued than darker skin across nations and history. according to http://amputd.com, "magazines are coming populated with light-skinned models; when black models or models from other ethnicities are featured, they are overwhelmingly to have skin that’s still relatively light and that conforms to the light-skin societal standard of beauty."  Also, having light brown or a “mid-tone” skin color is also an accepted standard of beauty in America. Allure magazine published a survey in March 2011 that found that 70% of participants (largely women) wanted to make their skin darker and that 64% of participants thought that mixed-race women were the personification of beauty. Presently, there’s a proposition in the American culture of beauty where some women born fair want to look darker while some women born darker crave lighter skin.

In the sitcom "Blackish", it explores what it means to be black in America and the subtle shades on racial issues or whether it does or should mean anything today. I've learn that the sitcom speaks broadly to topic regarding minority communities  and the fear that greater act to embrace a non-ethic mainstream ..and the producer is a woman of color, who took a bold ideas to shapes the writing towards the obvious prediction.

In many parts of the world, people are judged not just by their skin color but also by their skin tone. The devaluing of dark-skinned women, which is discussed in the documentary "Dark Girls," is something that hits close to home for Africa...Skin Tones are Gendered. And Colorism is A Gender Issue ..."We live in a society which is basically saying to us, we've got all these resources and products, and if there is anything about you we don't like, we can find a way of changing it."

My Socio Pop Culture Autobiography

Before taking this course, I had the assumption of pop culture just another course that I would be taking and getting my grade...Wow! How I was wrong. I have come to understand how the media classified, mis-judge, injustice of who "We" the people are or suppose to be. The inequality of the human race, how can we cope of bias against ethnicity, race, skin-tune, etc. This class had taught me to be able to have a voice, seeing beyond gender, race, class....it taught me to be the voice of the people... One of my favorite topic/video in this course is "The revolution will not be televised." shout out to my professor Dustin Kidd....Pop Culture Freaks: Identity, Mass Media, and Society

Now I can say it loud and proud that I am a POP Culture Freaks!!
