Gladio swore mistletoe wasn’t so prominent in previous years. Though, maybe his bar crawling near holidays just wasn’t the place to find the plant. Put mistletoe there and everyone would be kissing all night with enough alcohol in them.

He also didn’t think they’d be spending Christmas so far from home but, that’s just how this journey was going. Endlessly on the road. He’d been walking the Lestaullum market, between the stalls for a small trinket for each of his friends. He had an annoying singing fish for Noctis, some locally sourced more expensive ingredients for Ignis to inspire new recipes and for Prompto… he’d sneakily bought Mistletoe.

When he made it back to the Leville he took it out of the bag and held it up over his head, smirking at Prompto as he excitedly advanced upon him. “Pucker up, Chickadee.”

          christmas was never a big thing, really. prompto had very rarely ever even celebrated, only more so recently since he’d been friends with noctis. noct was always good like that, making him feel included, even with things like that. it made him feel like he really belonged. this was the first christmas the four of them would be spending together, though, and that meant that it had to be special. they were family now.

            sprawled out on the hotel bed, prompto stared blindly up at his phone in anticipation as he awaited a text from his boyfriend. it’s only when he hears the door to their room jiggle that he nearly drops his phone straight on his face, having only just moved out of its way when it lands on the mattress beside him. the blonde pushes himself up and watches as the door opens, small grin on his lips at the sight before him. 

             blue hues flicker upward when his hand raises and he spots the mistletoe between gladio’s fingers. ❛ y’know, i woulda kissed ya anyway, big guy. ❜ prompto chuckles softly as he rises to his feet, leaning on the tips of his toes as he pushes himself up and grabs each side of gladio’s face. he presses their lips together sweetly, allowing himself to melt into the older man. and for once he didn’t quite care about anything else, or if anyone would spot them, or what they would think if they did.

          prompto doesn’t burden the other with all of his questions, though he’s got too many to count. there are so many unknowns about all of this, and while a portal of darkness is fairly new to him -- he’s interest is piqued. he takes one step forward, followed by another, until he’s engulfed in the black and purple swirls of the portal. ❛ i dunno, don’t think i could ever get used to this. you’ve got, like, the entire world in the palm of your hand, man ! -- er ... maybe more at the edge of your fingertips ? ❜ 

              he shoots a cheeky grin over his shoulder at his new friend, hands on his hips as he continues onward. ❛ soo ... these other people that use these things, they’re like you ? long leather coats ? dangly chains ? ❜ prompto shifts to the side to walk next to axel, one hand dropping from his hip to reach out toward the mist of colors. he’s seen a lot of peculiar things in his short life, but this was cooler than all of that. ❛ what kinda purposes are these used for anyway ? ❜

he chuckles softly at his own joke  ,  thinking for a moment before taking a few flowers from their planters carefully.  flower language was one of  subtlety  after all  ,  &  more than anyone  ,  he’s certain aerith would understand that.  he glances over at the blonde a few times with a kind smile  ,  gesturing for him to come over to the planters  ,  where terra hands him a flower. 

‘ zinnia.  they’re used to tell friends you’re thinking of them. ’ 

he easily wraps up a small bouquet  ,  colorful  &  meaningful  ,  but not over the top  ,  &  ties it together with a ribbon  ,  holding it out with a satisfied nod.  he’s certain it’ll go over well  ,  there hasn’t been a single person he’s met that wouldn’t be happy to get some flowers.

          aerith was always kind to him, and for whatever reason had been down in the dumps lately. he knew almost nothing about anything, but he assumed that the gesture would be sweet enough. girls liked flowers, right ? or at least aerith seemed to. surely she would like whatever he’d picked out -- with the help of the cute shopkeeper. especially since he claims to know her. maybe they were friends, though prompto’s not sure why she hadn’t mentioned him before.

             he smiles warmly at the other, his own hand reaching out to take the flowers from him when they’d offered in his direction. ❛ ... you sure know a lot about flowers, huh ? ❜ and then suddenly it does make sense why him and aerith would be friends. ❛ u-uh, i think this is all for now. thanks, man. you’re the best ! ❜ with his free hand, prompto reaches into his pocket for his wallet in search of munny to pay terra. ❛ how much do i owe ya ? ❜

         prompto can’t remember the last time he’d seen zack. somehow it feels like it’s been decades, while it also feels like it’s only been a few months. he deduces it down in his head to about four years. so much has changed in such little time, part of him worries that he won’t remember him. he’d given up on the idea of zack coming home, almost fully having accepted the probability that he was long gone. people came and went, it was a rare occurrence that anyone would stay. for a while, it was just him and aerith; until one day he’d stumbled into sector seven and offered a hand to avalanche.

           he’d only been working with them for about a year or two, making decent money and giving a hand to the bar when needed. he survives better there than he ever has anywhere else, and they feel like home to him. there’s only one thing missing.

           it’s supposed to be a usual mission for them, the plan was to sneak into one of shinra’s mako reactors. their normal crowd could handle this, but for some reason there was talk of a new guy joining them. prompto didn’t think too much of it, he wasn’t as harsh to newcomers as the other guys could be. but he understands why they’d have their guards up; avalanche wasn’t too popular around town. there’s little time for him to dwell as they make their way to the meet up spot, arms crossing over his chest while he paces back and forth in anticipation. no one would blame him for being antsy, surely.

          the gunner looks down at his shoes as he leaves light imprints in the ground beneath him, his head only shooting up when he heard a familiar voice. zack. but it couldn’t be -- surely he was still with soldier, off doing whatever it was that had him too preoccupied for visits home to him and aerith. their eyes lock only for a quick second and prompto’s heart swells in his chest at the recollection of all the unreturned letters written, all of the missed phone calls, of his life before avalanche and how hard he’d worked to scribble zack from his memory. it almost hurts to see him again. he thinks it’d have been easier to believe that he was never coming back. 

              he’s older now, different. his eyes glow the same as they did four years ago, with same boyish smile. they’re both adults now, prompto having grown out of his awkward stage and into his body; with muscles and definition, a new hairstyle. he wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t remember who he was, though part of him hopes he will. now isn’t the time for all of that, though, there were other things to worry about. ❛ we should really get goin’, don’t wanna keep ‘er waiting. ❜
