“I haven’t seen anyone else around here in a long time.”  Her tone was wary, maybe even bordering on suspicious, but it had been – months?  Longer, maybe, since she’d seen anyone else with a pulse in the vicinity.  She didn’t think anybody else could’ve survived this far out on their own.  “What are you doing in the middle of actual nowhere?”

          “It’s not going to let up any time soon.”  She didn’t like being confined in one spot for long, not if it wasn’t her spot, wherever that might be for the week, the month, the year.  She frowned, almost audibly, at the large windowpane of the store front, and more specifically, at the torrential downpour and angry, lashing lightning beyond.   “This is not where I had planned on spending my day.”

“It’s fine – just take it  –”  The backpack was dropped from her shoulder to the crook of her elbow, to her hand, extended out as far as she could reasonably reach while still trying to keep herself clear of the weapon the other held.  “There’s food, water, a couple books, socks –”  It was surprising, just how multi functional socks could be, actually.  “If you need it that bad, just – take it.”  There wasn’t anything in the bag she couldn’t replace, though, she wold have to try and find another copy of the Westing Game – she needed to know how it ended.  “Let’s just both agree not to do anything stupid, okay?”
