thoughts on coop/ghoul's actions in s2e5. spoilers.
FALLOUT S2E5 spoilers below. do not click read more if you are not okay with potential spoilers.
i want to preface this that i am not debating if what he did by agreeing to trade lucy for the (possibility) of (maybe) keeping his daughter and wife alive is right or wrong in any modern or real world terms.
i'm discussing this in the context of the show, with fictional characters, in a fictional world. i'm also discussing this in the context of a parent who spent 17 years not knowing where two of her kids were, or if they were even alive after they were taken by their father.
of course it's going to be instinctive for most people to immediately be horrified by ghoul trading lucy. in a modern and not trauma informed mind and morality, that's reprehensible. lucy has trusted him (more than she should) and tried to befriend him and show him mercy and grace and kindness that she feels everyone deserves. whether they do or not, or whether you think cooper/ghoul does or not is irrelevant. they had been building a relationship. they were building rapport. a degree of mutual trust. she was worming her way under his armor of anger and bitterness and depression and grief and fear that he's been living in for two hundred years plus. we are meant to feel betrayed too.
this is especially easy for us because we, as the viewer, know that hank isn't trustworthy and we don't know if barb and janey are actually in those pods, so of course we're going to say don't be stupid, don't trust him, how can you betray lucy for a maybe.
two hundred years. he has spent two hundred years, survived hell on earth, done all manner of things he never thought he'd be capable of, to survive, for one singular purpose. to find his daughter.
now, we don't know what really happened yet with barb and coop. we hear whispers that he's paying alimony, implying divorce, and we don't immediately see a cryotube for coop so maybe they were divorced, maybe it was amicable, maybe it wasn't, we don't know. we know that coop felt betrayed by the revelations of what barb was doing, but i think it's fair to say that he still cared for her when the world ended, and still trusted her enough to keep janey safe, because janey is meant to be with barb wherever they are, together. he's going to want to find her, sure. but obviously, clearly, his one and only strand that keeps him clinging to what little humanity and hope he has left is finding janey.
he has, from what he's said, practically covered every inch of the united states looking for vaults, finding them ruined or abandoned or destroyed, or fucked up experiments running loose, including two vip bunkers, and every time he has to face the fact that he might find proof that his wife and kid are dead. and he keeps going. because he has to know.
of course he knows hank could be lying. of course he knows the cryotubes could be empty, or malfunctioned long ago and killed barb and janey. or maybe they were opened lifetimes ago and they already came and lived and died. of course he knows. i can promise you that he has spent every waking moment of his last two hundred years that he wasn't able to drink or drug his way out of the anxiety spiral spending those years playing out every single possible scenario for a few good endings and a multitude of terrible ones, horrible lives filled with the most traumatic experiences, as all of the might be, maybes, could've, should've, would've, what if, well if this, then that.
he feels guilt for a thousand thousand possible lives lived that probably never even happened. they might still just be asleep. they might've died peacefully in their tubes. but it's going to be worst case scenarios playing in his head constantly until he knows.
two hundred years. he's spent two hundred years wondering. and he knows hank could be lying. but it's the closest he's come in two hundred years and he would sell his soul, his life, he would betray anyone and do anything to just know.
i spent seventeen years searching online and through friends and through strangers, spent thousands of dollars i couldn't afford on trying to track the trail of the man who took off with my two and three year old sons, with over 24 addresses, aliases, and whatever else in the span of ten years, before running out of resources and ability to function even remotely like a human being for myself and the kid i had at home that i needed to be a functioning person with a modicum of sanity for and still spent the next seven years doing what i could that wouldn't ruin me financially or psychologically. when i tell you i would have done anything, betrayed anyone except my other child, to just KNOW THEY WERE OKAY, much less potentially be reunited with them???
and that's a normal fucking lifespan. that's not two hundred years. of hell. emotional and physical and psychological hell. not recognizing yourself, literally or metaphorically, because of what you've become, and realizing that this last thing that you have to do, that you don't want to do, it's going to destroy the last piece of who you were, for just, maybe? sorry, as horrible as it is, as awful a betrayal as it is, was, he was always going to make that choice. always.
