❝ well she is stronger than the rest of us , ❞ humor laces the brunette’s tone as she stands beside sabé , easily falling into rank . she’s always hailed sabé as something of their leader . she was , after all , the one who was with padmé the longest . the one who is still with her . when she’s home , things are always smoother . less tense . they’re at their best . it was something that dormé never fully understood until she joined the handmaidens . devotion , she understood . but it was easy to be devoted to someone like the senator . she was kind , fierce , and she cared genuinely and deeply . but the thing that struck her the most was how quickly the rest of them fell together . they moved like a singular unit , knowing and compensating for one another's’ strengths and weaknesses as if it was easy as breathing . they were a well oiled machine , and when sabé was around , they moved with practiced perfection .
❝ tatooine , ❞ the surprise is laced with pity . she can think of only about a hundred other systems that she would prefer . tatooine is nothing but sand and the very worst that their kind has to offer . ❝ isn’t that where the jedi was from ? ❞ her arrival was after the queen’s quest with the jedi , but the stories lasted far beyond her time on tatooine . ❝ well some things never change . the hutts will probably be in power long after the rest of us are dead . ❞ dormé steps into the suite after sabé , locking the door behind her . ❝ accompanying the senator . we figured it best , given the recent threats . ❞ there’s the slightest bit of hesitation in her tone before she continues , standing a bit taller and giving sabé a more serious look . ❝ they’re getting more frequent . the threats . and she’s growing more reckless . i fear her attachment to us makes her more prone to… involving herself where she shouldn’t . ❞ it’s their job to protect her , not the other way around . but padmé is not the type to be easily persuaded . then again , very few of them would dare going against sabé on such an issue . ❝ i’m hoping you can help her see reason . and to perhaps give cordé a bit of a reprieve . ❞
the jedi. anakin skywalker. the husband. “yes, he was. i doubt he’s been there in some time though, which makes one of us. i don’t think it’s the kind of place you miss,” she shrugs. she sits down to take off her boots, intent on making herself comfortable, since it’s going to be a while until either of them can speak with the senator. she’s been travelling in the dust and heat for several hours and isn’t sure she’ll ever have a long enough shower to feel truly clean. as dormé speaks, she raises an eyebrow. “well, i’m afraid i’m not a miracle worker, dormé,” sabé teases despite the seriousness of the request, as she unclips her blaster and utility belt and sets them down on a side table. the apartment is pristine as ever, hardly appearing lived in, which was mostly because padmé didn’t live in it the way most people did. it was beautiful, yes, but it didn’t hold much by the way of decorations and sentimental collectables, unless one counted the shiraya statues.
it is a house but less of a home, especially considering that most of her time was spent elsewhere. it was nothing like the lake house on naboo or her family home in theed, which was a pity really, because she knew how much padmé liked it there. perhaps one day more would fill the space than sparse interior design. looking back at dormé, sabé’s expression changes into something more somber, the smile fading. “it’s that bad, is it? once upon a time, i didn’t question her either. but someone has to, at some point.” she moves into the kitchen, knowing her voice will carry. she finds something to drink and pours herself a glass, setting another out for dormé. it’s not like padmé will mind if they raid her fridge and she’s rather hungry from her travels. taking a sip, sabé thinks for a moment, before she speaks. “she might have been a child queen and now she’s a senator but she’s human, she makes mistakes. not often, but she does. you don’t need one of those mistakes to cost someone their lives. if you have something you wish to discuss with her, you should know by now that you can. she’s reasonable. she would never ask cordé to do anything she wasn’t willing to do herself. she’s hard headed and stubborn but the last thing she wants is for any of you to be hurt because of her.”
privately, sabé believes it has more to do with the stagnation in the senate, the lack of direct action by those padmé works along side, and the need to do something, anything to make a difference. but that’s sabe’s job, isn’t it? to do the things padmé can’t, to go where she can’t go. perhaps she’s been away for too long. perhaps she needs to consider staying on coruscant for a while longer than just a few days. and if nothing else, she can certainly try and remind padmé that martyrdom isn’t what the galaxy needs. dormé doesn’t need to be reminded of the stresses and dangers of padmé’s job - she’s there with her everyday while sabé is off planet, doing whatever needs to be done. there is always a gnawing pang of guilt that she should be with her, doing more, by her side. but that time is passed and she has cordé and moteé and dormé now, presuming none of them are injured or killed. “if you think it will help,” sabé says warmly. “now...are you hungry? because i am.”
