Julius with a side of Lucius
The way that Zenon’s betrayal never happened👴 I would’ve been hollering like an ape at such a plot twist bc so many things could’ve justified it. Especially his past.
Not a redemption but just a betrayal to turn the battle on its head in the realest way possible.
Too bad Yuno is not like Asta. Just moinked the skelly man. Like the parallels between Asta and Yuno, and Allen and Zenon are great and all but sighhh backstories are not the only thing that can bring emotional complexity to a story Tabata!! Like I get it ooooh zenon came and killed half of Golden dawn, and he’s the evil version of Yuno ooooo paralleism!! Oooo
But consider this: Dante killed Yuno’s father and prolly his mom too. If Dante and Zenon had switched places when extracting Yami and William, Dante would’ve been the one to kill half of Golden Dawn and Zenon would’ve been the one to face off Yami and Asta.
Yuno found out Dante killed his parents just 5 seconds before Golden Dawn was attacked. In the heat of that information, he comes face to face with his parent’s killer. Dante kills half or however amount of people in Golden Dawn while taunting Yuno. That solidifies his hatred of him and when he comes face to face again in spade castle, boom under the overwhelming pressure of gravity, he gets his second grimoire: star magic. Stars are born under the pressure of gravity. It is so symbolic. He gets revenge on Dante.
Honestly, Magna’s fight with Dante is so random and tabata could’ve saved that up for an arc in the future like there was no build-up or hints that it was to fight Dante. Like zora and magna haven’t even seen Dante and somehow they were just ready to face him like the fight was so epic but it had little to no meaning.
Anyways getting back to the topic at hand:
Zenon would’ve fought Asta and Zenon would’ve seen so much of Allen in him. Asta would talk to him, Zenon would hesitate but he still sticks to the mission at hand. He takes Yami to spade but Asta reminds him so much of Allen. When they meet head to head again in Spade castle, Asta once again pleads to him just as Dante is defeated and the last gate opens and Lucifero comes out. Zenon snaps out of it and sees that this monster is not here to protect the people of spade kingdom. He fucked up and couldnt carry out Allen’s will and hope. In a last ditch effort to hold back the King of Devils, he fights the devil in him once again as he sacrifices himself and allows the Clover Kingdom Magic Knights to retreat.
And that’s how you add emotional complexity to shonen. Not a useless sob story of Allen and Zenon that adds absolutely nothing to the present. Zenon is dead and for what? For nothing. Absolutely nothing.
I think William falls into the same category as Finral and Lolopechka—too kind to be able to learn offensive spells.
William is always called kind by everyone around him. By Julius, by Yuno, even Patri acknowledges that William is different. Zenon calls him a fool for prioritizing others rather than himself
(Ch. 79)
(Ch. 143)
(Ch. 263)
William berates himself for his kindness (indecision between elves and humans), and Zenon calls him out as an idiot for his kindness too. But William then defends this, because Zenon insults the people who showed kindness toward William.
William can take insults. But he won't let Zenon talk down the others.
(Ch. 166)
If you look closer at William's spells, none of them are offensive. He can heal, he can bind, but they aren't full-on offensive.
When he dealt with Broccos (Ch. 77), he just used his magic according to its nature—trees need nutrients to feed on. Being trees made of magic, mana becomes obvious as a source of energy to them.
It wasn't a direct offensive spell, it was literally him growing a tree and using a person as the source. He does this earlier in Kiten too, using people's magic power in his vicinity to fuel his big tree.
Like Lolopechka, he could make things out of his magic that were intended for offense. She could make knight dolls, but could only make them look like they were attacking. William learned to make a sword out of his magic, but never used it himself until Lucius.
And really, is taking a sword and stabbing someone the same as an offensive magic spell in a grimoire? It was a matter of Creation Magic, and even Lolopechka could technically make soldiers, but couldn't be like Princia.
Whenever William uses his magic to beat an opponent, he just immobilizes them. His roots or vines move toward the target, and he technically wins via binding or draining their magic power afterwards.
Like Lolopechka, his spells look like attacks, but aren't actually that. William has incredible magic control, and his stats show it as a 5 (the highest it can go).
In the defending of Kiten, William did a huge spell—and he left no property damage. He didn't destroy any buildings. Look at the difference between how the spell was received, to the Diamond mages and the Clover citizens.
(Ch. 76 - 77)
The only people who were hurt by William's magic were Diamond mages; Clover citizens were completely fine and left alone. For example, Asta, Langris, Yuno, Charmy, and Finral, weren't impeded by the tree at all. It clears out around them.
In the 2 images above, Yuno is left alone despite the tree having grown heavily toward him. The Diamond mages were clearly picked out from where they were mixed with Clover citizens.
The people who destroyed the area were Diamond mages, and people like Yuno and Langris. There's no explicit showing of William himself actually destroying buildings or hurting civilians (I'm going based off the manga, I don't know if this proves the same in the anime).
Since William doesn't have clear offensive spells, and the nature of his magic is more protection (bulky, strong wood), that's probably a reason he put Langris as Vice-Captain (other than him being the vessel for Patri's cousin). Langris has offensive magic. He can deal with what William lacks, which is pure offensive power.
In summary,
William has great magic control, and he uses that to not hurt people or damage things unnecessarily
His magic only looks like attacks, something Lolopechka also does
When on the topic of William, everyone always points out how kind William is
With the earlier points, I think William is too kind to be able to learn offensive magic

"I'll be here for you, always and forever."
Honest to God I think Reinhard could've surpassed Gojo's popularity if the anime team knew how the hell to advertise him and gave him more than one outfit. Like- he's a sweetheart, he's got parental and grandparental issues, he's loved by God but hated by life, he's sworn his undying loyalty to an absolute goblin of a girlie, he's got an edge to him with his "do whatever it takes" tendencies, he wants desperately to protect those around him and has all the power in the world to do so but can't use any of it because he's trapped by various systems of power- doesn't the advertising team know the girlies eat that shit up??? I don't even think they'd have to slut him up to get attention, just put him in a turtleneck occasionally and they'd be good.
