A friend of mine was helping me get clear on some financial goals in exchange for my providing him development coaching. He was getting frustrated with me because I was inconsistent in executing the financial plan that we agreed upon. He said to me, âI donât understand you! How did you get to be successful thus far with having little discipline.â Â
This question stopped me! After I got over my initial âthe nerve of himâ reaction, I pondered. Good question! I asked myself, how did I accomplish so many goals with my inconsistent - resistant - say I want one thing and do another behavior?Â
Hereâs my answer: I set goals. I write my goals down. I keep at it. When I get sidetracked, I eventually get back on track. Rinse and repeat until I accomplish stated goal. Yea sure it takes a little longer, ok a lot longer, but I stick to it. It took me many years to end a going no-where dead end relationship. It took me 7 years to buy my first home. It took me 6 years to complete my M.A. degree. It took me 5 years to start writing/blogging (this is my 2nd post) and guess what? So what! Progress is progress.Â
Youâd be happy to know that Iâm back on track with my financial goals. And overall it takes me a lot less time to accomplish my goals. Why? (1) Iâm clear about what I want (2) I believe itâs possible (3) Iâm committed (4) I eliminate distractions and (5) I embrace fear. For these reasons, I focus and spend less time in distraction-land.
