When you're trying to control yourself from picking in front of people
Derma Problems
When you read a label that says ‘do not apply to open wounds’ and you’re just like pshhhgdfsvokay, and it’s just a gamble between it doing nothing and it burning like hell.
if you ever catch me picking:
-don’t just tell me to stop (especially if we’re around other people) -maybe try texting me or getting my attention (i usually do it when i start to lose focus or zone out, so getting my attention usually works, unless i’m majorly dissociating) -if that doesn’t work, gently touch my hand or the area i’m picking to draw my focus to it so i can stop -don’t just grab my hand or arm (i’ll split on you like a motherfucker and you’ll shock me and i’ll get overwhelmed) -please don’t think i’m doing it on purpose, it’s my equivalent of tapping feet or shaking legs -i control it as much as i possibly can -don’t make me feel bad about it -don’t think it’s me self harming, if anything, it’s the opposite (it’s not on purpose whatsoever) -don’t point out if you see scabs or band aids on me unless you’re one of my codependents (literally two people so….lmao just don’t) -just try not to be rude -i know you hate it -i hate it more
When you spend an hour in front of the mirror destroying your face, thanks to stress.
reblog this if you pick your lips, finger or any other skin and/or twirl your hair
What Not To Say to People With Dermatillomania
(Add more if I missed any)
“Just stop.”
“Keep your fingernails short and that will solve everything.” (spoiler warning, it won’t)
“But the scars make your skin so ugly.”
“No one wants to date someone with ugly skin.”
“It’s just a bad habit.”
“But it’s not like it’s self harm.”
“Just avoid mirrors.” (Lots of derma folks pick at arms, legs, scalps, etc. and you don’t need a mirror to pick at those.)
“Sometimes I pop pimples, too.” (This one might seem helpful and like you’re trying to relate, but derma is much more than just sometimes popping pimples. Derma is hours of picking at skin.)
“Stop picking at your skin, or you’ll end up full of scars and holes!”
Wow, thanks, that just did the exact opposite of helping me, good job.
This about sums it up. www.trich.org Thank you to the artist! (We’d love to know who you are)
