This I believe is one of many pinnacle moments within the movie as in the beginning Toothless was unable to get out of the basin for his own survival and would have died due to starvation or the Vikings finding him. Hiccup finds him and befriends him. When Hiccup is being attacked by the Monstrous Nightmare, Toothless hears him and manages to get his way out of the basin unlike he did before. This shows the ultimate friendship and loyalty between Toothless and Hiccup how much he is willing to save his best friend, Hiccup even though he knows that he would be either captured of killed by the vikings after he would defeat the Nightmare, he goes on disregarding his life and willing to make the sacrifice.
