Httyd cousins and their shared trauma of having tasted Astrid's Yaknog that nobody else could understand or relate to except the two of them
Inspired by this wonderful post by @stormsthatrage
Came across the above post which had a wonderful essay on the fact that Hiccup became a dragon rider without the slightest intention of becoming one.
His aim and intention had always been to help Toothless fly again, to give him back the freedom he took because a downed dragon is a dead dragon and he did this.
That joy in his smile when Toothless suddenly took off and he opened the tail and it worked, he was so happy.
And then the entire next sequence from Hiccup's side was focused on figuring out a way to help Toothless fly properly.
Which is beautiful in itself but there's another thing the post mentioned; Angst potential with the idea that Hiccup considers himself as part of Toothless prosthetic and how that could change the perspective of their relationship for Hiccup.
And while I have reasons to disagree because Hiccup knows Toothless sees him as best friend and not this, I can sort of imagine Hiccup being in this mindset at times.
And he could be for a while without telling anyone. He loves Toothless but sometimes during bad days used to wonder if he means the same to Toothless.
Until.
Until Gotnf.
This feeling rises, the guilt multiplies, the inner dilemma grows and when Tuffnut points out how Toothless can't go anywhere without him and then just... Hiccup puts aside his own 'selfishness' of wanting to have his first and best friend by side to give him the auto tail.
And Toothless leaves. Takes off suddenly without a goodbye and doesn't come back.
Hiccup is even more broken on the inside now but then he ends up being carried off by Meatlug and learns why the dragons left. He still can't find Toothless though. He brings them all back and he is happy for them all. He is. But it still hurts to lose what he brought back to everyone. Was he really just a means for Toothless to fly and no more? Why didn't he come back?
Only to turn around and see him there and then find out that Toothless had found his helmet. He didn't abandon Hiccup, he was searching for that helmet which Hiccup doesn't even care for (but clearly Toothless knew the helmet was important because he probably heard Stoick mention it and I'm not adding to this by going into another essay on how Toothless is adopted into the fam by Stoick).
Still, still, he learned that Toothless does care for him but maybe the helmet is his way for saying thank you. A part of him still hasn't let go of that belief that he was important to Toothless because he controlled half his tail to help him fly.
And then- when he tries to mount him, trying to tell him he doesn't need a saddle, he has that new tail now- Toothless opens and shows him said auto tail, the freedom, looks into Hiccup's eyes and breaks it.
That's the final nail, that's when Hiccup's belief of just being a prosthetic shatters apart for good. Toothless breaking that tail was such a beautiful, poetic, wonderful sequence. He made a statement to Hiccup in that moment.
I don't care about freedom, I don't care about flight. I care about you.
He shows Hiccup that he loves him, and it's not for helping him fly or 'being a prosthetic' or whatever bad thoughts are plaguing his human friend that Hiccup doesn't share but Toothless knows him well enough and cares about him enough to know just what to do to make him feel better, to tell him he cares.
Brb, crying about the best friends again

A little Toothless on your dash to vanquish the January doldrums
You know I’m fr back in the httyd trenches bc I am at risk of writing a gotnf fanfic for the first time since winter 2011/2012
something I think about this time every year is that the first, seasonally-appropriate exposure to GotNF rewired my brain to such an extent that I always feel that HTTYD fics set in winter are the Most Correct. GotNF is the pinnacle of how HTTYD a thing can be, and that somehow bleeds into me feeling like winter HTTYD fics are the most authentic, lol
Happy Snoggletog!
