I was scrolling through the scgsah tag and noticed that you got into the school for creative writing. I was wondering what the audition process was like?
For residential, our “audition process” is mostly showing that you work hard. Your application should be writing you’ve spent ample time and energy on (probably not going to be a first draft). The most important part of your workshop is just to not stop writing. Don’t waste time trying to “think” of what to write, just chose something and go with it until they call time. The biggest question in your interview is “who do you read?”, so make sure you read a range of mostly contemporary writers, know authors by name, and can talk about specific aspects and pieces they’ve written. There’s a recommended reading list on the scgsah website you can look into. Also, if you find an author you love, read through some interviews with them to see who their influences are too. And make sure you have a reading and writing scheduled you can talk about in your interview. Don’t just say you “write when you feel inspired.” Also, I’m giving tours on the Greenville audition dates so come find me! I’ll be wearing a blue shirt and name tag. <3
