Alicia Vikander. I love doing interviews that are about work I do, films that I make. I am not very interested in the rest. I think I have always been quite reserved and a bit frightened of that whole thing.
When Astrid thinks back to her time as a mundane history student in the streets of Toulouse, what she remembers are the pink stones of the city centre and the azure windows peeking from centuries-old buildings. Her brother’s careful steps as he passed her room at night tiptoeing towards his own trying not to wake the rest of the house. Her sister saying that she had fallen in love and was moving to Paris. Her skin soft with the late-spring warmth of the Jardins where she and her group of friends went sprawling on the grass to “study”. The fish market in Place Victor Hugo and the fast food in Rue Pomme.
She also remembers Adrien’s mess of blonde curls and his studio, the white sheets light as a breeze on their naked bodies. Sometimes it feels like a dream, sometimes like the only real thing that has ever happened in her life. Sometimes she wishes she could go back, but she’s still unsure if it was him she was in love with, or the city. And besides, I am different now. I’m here. I’m staying.
«Mais oui que je vais t’appeler, quoi. Eh bien, tu sais que je suis très occupée. Oui. Oui, je vais être sage, t’enquête. Je t’aime aussi, ma sœur. Donne une baiser à Marinette pour moi, oui? À toute.»
Astrid closed the FaceTime call with a smile that tasted of sorrow and her older sister’s beautiful blue eyes glittering with that last ‘I love you’. She could almost picture her, setting aside her computer on the creamy couch they had picked together and leaning in to get a kiss from her wife, Parisian night outside the window. Sometimes Astrid envied Guenièvre’ and Marinette’s easy happiness, the joy of being together simply and without drama, the delicate grasp they both had on a magic that didn’t really count that much to both of them.
And here she was, on the other side of the Ocean, as lost as ever in a storm of power and danger and uncertainty that threatened to carry her away whenever her footing wasn’t more than iron-anchored. Astrid wasn’t sure the tornado would have brought her to a very friendly Oz. More like a Gaiman-esque hell, all things considered. She sighed and scratched Pamplemousse behind her ears. The cat purred, sitting comfortably on the MacBook’s charger to keep warm as she always did, and Astrid couldn’t (wouldn’t) fight the pang of affection that surged in her stomach. I am so desperate for love it’d be funny, if it wasn’t pathetic first. She pushed the chair backward and stood up from her writing desk, stretching her bare legs.
The room they had assigned her at Lake Pacific wasn’t as big as her old quarters at Wardlaw, but Astrid didn’t complain as some of her colleagues were tirelessly busy doing — she and Pamplemousse didn’t need that much space, and in all honesty most of her living space was taken up by her books. After one got used to all the slaloming around, it wasn’t that bad. And what really sold this room to her was the small balcony. Had she been a smoker, Astrid would have spent every second there. But she had quit back when her rebellious teenager phase had ended, and so she stepped out to read a bit, or during evenings to watch the clouds. Which was precisely what she did then.
American autumn skies were much more similar to the French ones than England’s had been. Warmer, clearer, softer. Looking up, Astrid saw dark blue swirls that were just like the ones that used to pass above her house in Toulouse. The ones that she would summon. She remembered how her mother would calmly applaud her abilities behind her icy eyes and despite the strictness of those times, Astrid found herself today wishing that she could go back. At least she had directions, then. A purpose. Now? Now there was nothing. Nothing but a storm in which she had one certainty — she needed to get her powers reined in fast, before it was to late to take care of her girls.
Let no one think of me that I am humble or weak or passive; let them understand I am of a different kind: dangerous to my enemies, loyal to my friends.
I am torn in two but I will conquer myself.
Anne Sexton - from The Civil War (via claireeunderwood)
Real magic can never be made by offering up someone else’s liver. You must tear out your own, and not expect to get it back. The true witches know that.
The Last Unicorn, Peter S. Beagle
We are split people. For myself, half of me wishes to sit quietly with my legs crossed, letting the things that are beyond my control wash over me. But the other half wants to fight the holy war.
Zadie Smith, White Teeth
“I do work very hard. I have been very colored by that education. I spent six days a week, seven hours a day training. That will always be the foundation of my work.”
anything concerning her hometown of Toulouse
but also anything concerning her general life in France and French things and lifestyle
ANYTHING PERIOD DRAMA
and anything victor hugo
anything with the wardlaw girls that explores the relationship that she has with her students
or one of the students asking her something about one of her lessons???
SITUATIONS
i have this idea that she has tea afternoons with the wardlaw girls and talks about queens of the past who were witches and no one knew. is it a stupid idea??? idk.
also, someone catches her training her almost-out-of-control powers and a conversation about the whole deal sparks to life

WHOM
Parents » Emmanuel Nasari Chevalier and Isabeau Elise Barday met during a wild summer rain at Mont St. Michel, where they were both having a family holiday. A couple of years later, Isabeau had told Emmanuel about her magic heritage and they had moved in together in Emmanuel’s city, Toulouse. Emmanuel works as in the local Beaux Arts museum, while Isabeau is heavily entangled with the local magical community. They never married, but they’re fiercely devoted to each other and to the children they have together ― Guenièvre, the oldest, Astrid and then Rostand, the baby of the family. The girls have always had a stormy relationship with their mother, who has been in charge of their magical education since they showed the first signs of power, and Astrid sometimes still clashed with her. On the other hand, she loves her dad with all of her heart. He’s the one who passed onto her the passion for History that has made her pursue the career of a professor. (faceclaims: Jean Dujardin and Sophie Marceau)
Siblings » Lena is the middle child of three siblings. Guenièvre, or Gin, moved to Paris where she lives with her wife and her job at the Hotel de Ville, while Rostand, the youngest, is finishing University in Toulouse. (faceclaims: Lea Séydoux and Pierre Hancisse)
Pets » Astrid shared her apartment at Wardlaw, and now her room in Lake Placid, with her cat. A very common tabby, but nimble and swift like the wind that Astrid conjures up from the window. Her name is Pamplemousse.
WHAT
Movies » Astrid loves cinema, like every good French person, even if she can’t get into the really avant-garde pieces produced by the Nouvelle Vague. She just can’t, and that has led to many an argument with her sister Gin, who loves them to bits. Astrid likes quieter movies, period dramas especially and author films with sweeping soundtracks and good acting. That doesn’t mean that sometimes she doesn’t like to sit and watch some explosion-filled blockbuster, of course.
Music » Astrid was raised on classical music and french songwriters. From there, she evolved by herself into an indie rock princess. She adores Mumford&Sons, Bastille, Imagine Dragons, Of Monsters And Men, Florence + The Machine, Halsey, The Killers, Hozier, and generally everything that’s indie. She also loves powerful instrumental pieces, and has quite the big collection of movie scores. Her favorite composer is hands down Hans Zimmer.
Shows » All the period dramas. All of them. The White Queen, Game Of Thrones, The Musketeers and every mini-series produced by the BBC ever.
Books » Astrid reads a lot, mostly fantasy, historical novels, books about myths and narration theories, biographies, history manuals, and poetry. Her favorite books will always be hands down Les Misérables because she just cannot escape the French cliché.
Quotes » It’s the description that Victor Hugo gives of Cosette, and goes, “D’ailleurs Cosette de sa nature n’était pas très effrayée. Il y avait dans ses veines du sang de bohémienne et d’aventurière qui va pieds nus. On s’en souvient, elle était plutôt alouette que colombe. Elle avait un fond farouche et brave.”
