These are some lovely sun prints I made last summer! I was able to portray myself by using objects from around my home, I would like to do this with my students! I also used a drawing I did that was printed on a transparent plastic sheet to create a negative of my drawing!

Watercolor and Oil
I don’t have an example I made for this one but I have used this art experience with 1 year olds before! The beautiful combination of water color and oil is another way to teach kids about the difference between oil and water and how they repel one another!
You can use cooking oil but baby oil is better because it doesn’t have that yellow tint!

A wonderful way for helping the little ones associating words with their meanings is by showing both text and image and saying each word verbally as well! This also helps older students remember what they need by reaching all students who process information differently. For instance, I can always pronounce a student’s name better if I can write it down and know how it’s spelled but someone else may remember it much better by just hearing it. Some students will respond better to images, text or verbal instruction!

Gambo represents young people in her work enjoying their youth and focuses on the experiences of women in education which is one of the reasons why I gravitated towards her. The other reason is that she combines her photography with other media, such as collage and illustration. Through my education in photography I have never had a teacher encourage me to use mixed media in my photography, and I really wish I had. This is just another reason why only showing your students work by traditional artists is not fully educating them. If educators do more research into a wide range of artists they will discover more ways to utilize different media and be able to inspire their students. I had not even thought of using collage in my photography or creating illustrations to pair with photographs. I think this would elevate my artwork and also allow me to revisit some old photographs! I will be using all of these artists as examples for my students in the future and I am so happy I discovered this show! I really recommend checking it out!

Fatoumata Diabaté also demonstrates perfect technical skill while simultaneously representing something very special and relatable. In her work she represents young girls who are exploring their developing identities through clothing. I found these photos so heartwarming and even made me feel nostalgic. I think young female students will see themselves in her work and will be able to see that they can be an active part in the art world. I also found Diabaté’s work relevant because she is showing girls as girls, not sexualized, not uncomfortably posed, just being themselves, young and having fun with clothes, not looking like grown women but looking like the adolescents they are. It is very important to me that young girls are allowed to be and regularly shown girls doing just that. The world has been increasingly pressuring girls to look and behave like grown women and if there is anything I can do to help girls be happy with themselves as girls I will do it.

I was first introduced to film photography when I was thirteen. I took classes at the Worcester Art Museum. My teacher taught us the logistics and skills of photography and showed us the work of many famous photographers including people like Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, etc. Never once were we shown work by artists of color. Of course there were some photos that white photographers had taken of BIPOC because there is a history of photographers gaining some sort of clout through photographing “marginalized people.” As I move from my career as an artist and a student into my career as an educator this is something that is on my mind. There is a large possibility that I may have the opportunity to teach film photography to the youth of Worcester, like I was taught. It is my responsibility as a white educator to change the racist patterns which have been perpetuated in the art world, especially teaching in Worcester where there is a very diverse community.
Sanlé Sory’s work can be used to show students how important it is to find the perfect exposure while printing a photo. In Sory’s portraits he has clearly worked very hard on finding the perfect aperture and exposure time to get an even range from white to black with all the gray tones in between. His work also tells a complicated story about himself and his community. I think students will find his work much more interesting and relatable than a picture of a mountain taken by another white guy.
Drawing a face can be super hard! One thing I have found that helps us remembering the proportions of the face! The eyes are half way down the head, there are five eyes across the face, the nose ends half way between the eyes and chin, the the mouth is half way between the nose and chin and the ears go from the eyes to nose!

Things To Make and Do - Child Horizons by Esther M. Bjoland (1961)
This spread from my trusty vintage book unlocked a lovely memory! When I ws in high school I took a fun gym class (I know! A fun gym class??) We were taught how to snowshoe, canoe, make outdoor shelters, etc. Making outdoor shelters was so much fun! I have always naturally loved nature and architecture so this was a wonderful lesson for me! I think making this into an art assignment would be so much fun and could bring up a lot of discussion about how making structures is art! It will also be a good way to cater to students who are spatial learners!
Sketchbooking - David Fullarton
For older students using a sketchbook regularly can be a great way to gain comfort in art-making and also using art to process emotions! David Fullarton uses a combination of illustration and collage in his sketch books to express passing thoughts and opinions which can be a great example for students to see and inspire how they use their sketchbooks!
