Re: your reply to the ask about comparing Israel to the Nazis (not sure how tumblr works, this is the only way of replying I could think of). You said that comparing genocides is lazy, ignorant, and insulting. This is pure ignorance on my part, but I had assumed that comparing genocides is a part of genocide studies, is that not the case?
Tl;dr: genocide studies as its own distinct field was a newborn baby in the 1980s and thus used the Holocaust as a yardstick. But after a while the field matured enough that it no longer needed a yardstick as much. In other words, those comparisons were used to comprehend and understand genocide as a distinct product of modernity; not to self-righteously fuck with Jewish people and exonerate oneself from the burden of understanding the Holocaust.
