Loki couldn’t have ignored Fee’s gentle words even if he wanted to when they sounded magnified now, gripping on tight to the headboard as he tried to take deep breaths, feeling like all the sounds and smells in the ward were suffocating him when his panic had suddenly left him with so little self control. When he had been calm it had been easy to dismiss his fears and attempt to attach some other reason to them, to ignore what he now had no doubt was true. Now it was impossible not to dwell on every option, every risk- now whenever he looked at her he found himself terrified that she might come to harm, most of all that he might be responsible.
Swallowing thickly as he heard her apologise, Loki still found himself incapable of looking at her properly, only doing so when she followed him across the bed and grasped his hand tight. The warmth of her skin and the firmness of her grip were enough to ground him somewhat, to help him separate the chaos of his senses from reality. He lifted his gaze then, relinquishing his grip on the headboard and trying to relax, only then realising that he was shaking. She was here, she was safe- he hadn’t hurt her. Yet, his mind whispered. How she hadn’t descended into panic herself was beyond him.
“What if I do?” He murmured, Fee’s words still ringing in his ears. You’re not entirely human anymore. How was one supposed to handle something like that? “Fee, what if I hurt someone else? What if I don’t even know that I’m doing it?” When he had witnessed the savage nature of Alana’s hunger, it filled him with dread to so much as consider ever being the same. Her gentle reassurances helped, but only a little. Yes, he was still Loki, but now he was Loki and a vampire. Surely that meant that he couldn’t ever be the same again? There were too many questions for him to ask, and no time at all for him to voice them. When she explained that he couldn’t remain in the hospital when they would notice all the changes, Loki knew that she was right.
“What do we do, then?” He queried, voice quiet and unsure. “Surely they’re not going to let me go yet?”
Fee swallowed hard, the soft flutter of her pulse and the rhythmic beating of her heart loud in her own ears. She didn’t loosen her hold on Loki’s hand until he seemed to relax, sounding scared and unsure but not as frantic as he had been before. She leaned into the palm of his hand, her fingers splayed over his, long and delicate, as she guided him from her neck to instead cup her cheek. There, she nuzzled affectionately, seeking to soothe him with silliness and adoration both. “I won’t let you,” she said simply, holding his gaze. “If you try to hurt me, try to hurt anyone, I’ll stop you and I’ll make you see sense again. If that’s what it comes to, we’ll find a way, I promise.”
She understood more than he knew.
After all, even though her magic was inborn, its growth intrinsically linked with her own, the discovery that she wasn’t entirely human had still shocked her. And she had - much like Loki - questioned what that meant for her, when so many works of fiction painted witches as something dark and twisted and evil. Learning about the occult had been another thing entirely to realising she belonged to it.
“They won’t advise it,” she agreed. “But they can’t stop you from self-discharging, if you insist on it.” It was in Loki’s best interest, and Fee would never have suggested he do if not for the situation he’d found himself in. A small part of her, however, was selfishly glad at the prospect of leaving the hospital behind them. It was hardly her favourite place in the world. There was too much death in them. Too many ghosts roamed the corridors, lost and afraid, and Fee found it difficult to ignore them.
Not to mention, the last time she’d been in a hospital was when Alfie was born. “It’s up to you, Lo. But if you stay, it’s only a matter of time before something comes up or a question’s asked that we can’t answer.”

beautiful-mischief:
Loki wasn’t entirely sure what to make of Fee’s reaction to such a simple observation, blinking in quiet surprise at the dubious look upon her face. But, when she reiterated that it had been that morning, he realised that maybe it wasn’t quite so normal to have picked it up. The smell of cigarette smoke, maybe, but not so much what she had eaten for breakfast hours before. Although some small part of him supposed he knew why she was alarmed, he seemed reluctant to admit it to himself. Not when things had already been strange enough.
Uncertain under Fee’s intent, scrutinising stare, Loki sat up and watched as she combed her fingers through her hair so that it covered her neck. Surely this couldn’t be what he thought it was?
Did she really think he was one of them?
Diverting his gaze as Fee spoke again, trying not to let panic seep in, he only lifted his head to regard her once more when he heard her query. Part of him wanted to scoff, to laugh and insist that of course he couldn’t- but now he realised that he had just been trying to ignore it. Now that she had pointed it out, the fluttering of her heartbeat was more pronounced than ever, a dull thumping that he otherwise might have assumed was music being played in the room next door. Face blanching, he immediately scurried backwards across the bed and away from her, eyes wide. The thought of hurting her without even meaning to filled him with dread, the heart rate monitor beside him spiking as the panic set in. “I’m not…I-I can’t be.” He insisted, no matter how futile his protests seemed. “Fee, you really don’t think that she- that she turned me?”
It was natural that she should feel wary. If Loki had been turned… if he was in the process of transitioning into something nonhuman… that meant he was a danger, not just to her but to all those around them, from the nurses to the patients. But when he scrabbled away from her, looking so frightened of the implications, that he might be a threat to her, Fee’s concern was drowned out by something stronger. The need to protect him, even if it meant she needed to protect him from himself.
“Loki,” she said, and it wasn’t an answer. Because she couldn’t offer him the answer he seemed to want to hear. It made sense, all the loose threads of that night coming together with a sharp realisation. Something had changed in Loki. And while Fee didn’t understand herself exactly what that change was, or what it would mean for him, she knew enough to know one thing: “Whatever it is that you’re becoming, you’re not entirely human anymore. There’s something different now. I’m sorry.”
She didn’t allow him to stray far, following him across the bed, disrupting pillows and even the bear she’d brought along with her. She stole his hand in hers and held it tightly, bringing it to her neck as though in a wordless apology for ever shying away from him. “You won’t hurt me,” she said, voice strong and firm. “Even if you are like them now, you’re still Loki. You’re still far braver and far stronger than they’ve ever been. I trust you. It’s gonna be okay, Lo, but you can’t stay in here now. They’ll start asking too many questions.” If he was changing, it was only a matter of time before something strange showed up on his tests.
beautiful-mischief:
Loki merely chuckled and rolled his eyes at Fee’s remark, continuing to snack on the strawberries as she laughed at his voracious appetite. “Don’t judge me, you’d be this hungry too if you hadn’t eaten proper food for a week.” He observed, a wry smile pulling at the corners of his lips. As she insisted that his apology was needless, he offered a nonchalant shrug in answer. When they had scarcely seen each other he hadn’t wanted to disappoint by drifting off to sleep the minute she arrived, even if resting was the best thing for him to do at the time. “I suppose.” He mused, shooting her a teasing look. “I’m sure you’ll be able to think of something.”
It did not surprise him that Fee sobered some when he asked her how she had been. Although he had no clue as to what had been transpiring in his absence, he imagined it hadn’t been easy to forget that night. “It wasn’t your fault.” Loki insisted. “Please, Fee, don’t blame yourself.” Shifting closer, he exhaled a soft sigh and lay his head on her shoulder, an arm slipping around her waist. “How you feel is important. I might have my injuries to deal with, but you were there too. To be entirely frank I’m not surprised you’re blaming yourself- I knew you would right from the start.” Her reluctance had been completely understandable, and even before they had executed their plan he had sensed her reticence when it came to putting him at risk. All along he had been the one to insist that they had to go through with it. “I’m still here.” He murmured softly, turning his head to press a soft kiss to her neck. “It’s over. We don’t need to be afraid anymore.”
As Fee asked how he was feeling, Loki chewed idly on another strawberry and contemplated his answer quietly for a moment. “I think I’m fine.” He began, hesitant for a moment. “I just think this place is getting to me- the boredom, maybe. It’s probably nothing.” Staring down into the punnet, he tried to think of how best to describe it. “It’s too bright in here, it’s too loud- I don’t know, everything just seems like it’s been dialled up to eleven.” Pausing, he wrinkled his nose. “Have you been eating burnt toast again? I can smell it on you.”
Fee exhaled a tremulous breath, dark lashes dipping as he drew her close, an arm snaking around her waist and his lips pressing a soft kiss to the delicate skin of her neck. It elicited a smile from the witch, a breathless sounding laugh because it tickled. She wanted to believe him when he said it was all over, though there remained a shadow of doubt. Her world was dangerous, more so than he seemed to realise even having faced it head on. While Eden and his sister had been a threat, there were worse threats out there. How was she supposed to keep him safe when there was so much lurking in the shadowy reaches? How was she supposed to keep him safe when he was so vulnerable to her world?
Still, Loki knew how to comfort her with his closeness, even if he couldn’t make her believe his words. He knew how to whisper nothings so sweet Fee couldn’t resist their allure. Even if, deep down, she knew he was wrong, she could allow herself to think otherwise.
At least, for now.
She might’ve dismissed his symptoms had it not been for that final, innocuous statement. Fee drew back, fixing him with a dubious look. “Well, yeah,” she said. “But that was hours ago. And it’s not like I meant to burn it! You know I can’t work that damn toaster. It’s either warm bread or ashes. No in between.” But that wasn’t the point she was making. Loki’s senses were clearly in overdrive.
His sight.
His hearing.
Even his sense of smell was enhanced.
There was something about him that Fee had been ignoring.
Perhaps because she wanted to be mistaken.
Perhaps because she was hoping it was just the lingering effect of his injuries, leaving that… aura of otherness. Or an echo of her own magical influence from where she’d tried to heal him. But it was a week later, and still… something was different about him. The closer she looked, the more difficult it was to deny. It wasn’t just the remnants of her magic. It was something new. Something that was potentially dangerous.
She thought about Eden’s reaction that day, how he’d been so angry with Alana, demanding to know what she’d done…
“Fuck,” Fee said, running a hand through her hair and staring elsewhere for a long moment. She couldn’t quite bring herself to meet Loki’s gaze as she covered her neck with her long hair, almost needing to have a barrier there between them. “What else, Lo?” she asked, her voice hushed and solemn. She looked at him intently, searching his eyes as though to confirm her own suspicions. “Can you hear my heartbeat?” Could he sense the blood rushing through her veins?
beautiful-mischief:
When he had been oblivious to the events of the past week, admittedly Loki rather enjoyed the small talk with the nurses, finding it sweet how they spared no detail in mentioning Fee’s frequent visits. It was good to know that she had been there with him through it all, whether he had been conscious of it or not, even having visited him more than Thor had- though that much was understandable when he had been tasked with letting their parents know that he’d been attacked. It was a wonder Frigga hadn’t come visiting already, although Loki imagined his brother had suggested she not worry so much when she would be free to visit once he was back at the university and the investigation was over. If anything, the only person he truly wanted at his side was Fee- she was the only person who understood.
Although Loki had felt in better spirits compared to the previous day, a little less tired and bleary now that they had eased him off of some of the painkillers, the sheer boredom was infuriating. He felt as if he could hear every single sound on the ward, every rustle of the curtains or cough or sneeze or beep, restless and trying to block out the rest of the world until Fee arrived. When she did, he was fairly sure that he noticed her presence before she’d even walked down the corridor. Part of him imagined it was the fact that he had grown used to the sound of her footsteps in those thick leather boots, the soft jingle of all the jewellery she wore- but when he thought about it he could smell her too. It was curious, though his usually rational mind dismissed it as the sterile environment having left him all the more attuned to anything from outside. That was all it could be, surely?
“Good morning.” Loki hummed, offering Fee a wide grin in return as she emerged. He shifted to make room for her beside him on the bed, eyes gleaming with curiosity as she settled her bag down in front of her. When she revealed the punnet of strawberries his hand immediately darted out to steal one and pop it into his mouth, almost groaning his pleasure at the taste. “I’m certainly not complaining.” Loki reassured. “I’m starving. Not to mention the food here is so bland.” Licking the juice from his fingers, he then reached for another, another grin splitting his features as Fee revealed the stuffed bear. “I adore it.” He reassured, laughing as he did. “Though I think you’re right.” Carefully picking the leaves from the strawberry that he had taken, his expression softened some. “How are you? I’m sorry I dozed off yesterday.”
Fee arched a brow, watching as he devoured one strawberry after another and sparing a thought to whether she should have brought more. It had to be a positive sign, the fact he clearly had his appetite back, and Fee would happily have him eat a thousand strawberries if it meant he was on the road to recovery. “Damn, Lo,” she said with a laugh, her gaze lingering as he licked his fingers clean. “I guess there’s some truth to the saying the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.”
The bear was propped carefully against the pillows, Fee taking the time to make sure it sat upright while considering Loki’s question. It was laced with a needless apology; she hadn’t been surprised at all when he’d fallen asleep. It just meant he was resting, recuperating, and that was more important than having him listen to her blather on. “Don’t be daft,” she said, her smile fond. “The more you rest up, the quicker you can be discharged. And then I’ll have you all to myself, right? You can make it up to me then.”
She worried at her lower lip, idly playing with one of the rings adorning her slender fingers. “Honestly? I dunno. It’s been… kind of a weird week. I keep… thinking about it, y’know? I know you’re gonna say none of it was my fault, that’s just the sorta guy you are, but… I just…” She didn’t finish her sentence, averting her gaze and forcing a smile back on her lips. “It’s not important,” she decided. “I’m more interested in how you are. You’re the patient here, Lo. So how are you feeling?”

beautiful-mischief:
In his current state Loki was more than willing to do as he was told and not dwell on such things, a fleeting smile crossing his lips as she chided him. For the moment it did not occur to him that the investigation might not be over, that there was no doubt more for them to endure, certainly of the opinion that he wasn’t in much of a position to be answering questions about anything when he could scarcely keep his eyes open. All that mattered was that Fee was with him now, even if she didn’t seem completely herself. Tired, no doubt, just as he was. He knew that smile well enough to know that it was forced. It had least worked in her favour that his mind wasn’t quite as sharp as it should have been though, that he wasn’t so quick to ask questions. The important thing had been to know if Eden and Alana had gone, and they had.
Murmuring his thanks as Fee agreed to read to him, he relinquished his grip on her and made himself as comfortable as he could manage, comforted by the warmth of her body beside his. Although he did not sleep right away he let his eyes fall closed, to block out all the light, to block out the bleak hospital room, merely savouring the soothing sound of her voice as he lay his head on her shoulder.
Try as he might, it took barely any time at all for him to drift back off to sleep, lips parted with slow, even breaths and messy curls strewn across the stark white pillows where she had carefully slipped out of his grasp. She might have been there hours, but he couldn’t be sure when it had all passed so fleetingly. His eyelashes fluttered as he felt her warm breath on his face and the gentle brush of her lips across his forehead, lips twitching at the corners into a smile. Even through his grogginess he might have tried to say goodnight, but when his eyes refused to open and he succumbed to slumber once more, she was soon gone.
The next time he awoke it was early the next morning, the ward plunged into an eerie darkness lit only by a single lamp down at the end of the corridor and the all the hundreds of minuscule lights beeping and flashing on all the machines. As far as he could tell he was the only one awake, gaze drifting to his bedside table and a soft chuckle escaping him as he noticed the book sitting there. Not that he’d heard much of it to begin with, but he appreciated the thought. The nighttime gloom was easier on his eyes now, the serene quiet less assaulting to all his senses when daytime had felt like a blur of sounds and colours, just a little too much. Loki would have liked to have thought it was the medicine, hopeful that he might be able to feel like himself again come morning.
Fee was later than usual the next morning, prompting the nurses on the early shift to chat with Loki as they made their rounds. It was small-talk, more than anything, but they seemed sincere in their fondness, smiling as they made reference to his girlfriend, and how she’d practically been living with him at the hospital over the course of the last week. “Trust me. She’s a keeper, that one. And such a bonny lass, too. You keep hold of her, you hear?”
Once they’d done the necessary checks, fluffing up the pillows while maintaining a respectful distance, they soon moved on. The wards were full to the brim, after all, beds crammed in and separated by only flimsy modesty curtains. Now Loki was awake, he wasn’t as much a priority as he had been upon admission.
“Morning, Sue,” Fee greeted on of the nurses she passed, sounding cheerful as she wrestled her way through the doors leading to the ward Loki was on. “And good morning to you too, handsome,” she said with a playfully obvious wink sent in Loki’s direction. It earned them both fond looks, the nurse watching them for a moment before allowing them their privacy.
Fee sat on the edge of the bed, still careful but not nearly as hesitant as she had been the day before. She rummaged through the bag she’d brought with her, producing a punnet of strawberries – “Giving fruit is, like, the standard, right? Anyway, I’d get weird looks if I brought you a freaking pizza, Lo.” – and one of the bears from the hospital’s shop with its paw in a sling. Fee laughed as she brandished it, bright-eyed and playful. “I did look for a bear with a vampire bite, but apparently the hospital really needs to expand their collection, huh?”

“Mm’ not sappy.” Loki mumbled in protest, on the verge of yawning but then wincing in pain when the movement agitated his neck, eyelids still drooping even as he nuzzled into Fee’s shoulder. “Just grateful. It’s not everyday you find yourself survivor to two vampire attacks and live to tell the tale.”
Although he was finding it difficult to stay awake, Loki sobered some as Fee explained what had happened since. Passing off his wounds as an animal attack would at least be a more believable tale, even if he wasn’t entirely sure what sort of animal might have been stalking university grounds- maybe he’d have to feign ignorance at that part, pretend that the memories were too traumatising to know for sure. It wasn’t as if he’d be lying. At least Fee hadn’t been blamed for any of it, not when it was hardly an easy situation for her to be in, found there holding his body and covered in his blood. Even so soon after seeing her again he had a feeling she would blame herself for it all anyway, something which wouldn’t be all that surprising when she had tried to drive him away for far less. It hadn’t been her fault, not one second of it- he had gone into the situation willingly, had practically orchestrated it himself when he had been the one to suggest incriminating Eden first.
Speaking of the vampires, it was at least a relief to hear that they had left Fee alone in wake of Alana’s attack. The last thing he wanted was to have to return to the university and see them both again, and he imagined it had been the wake up call that Eden and their coven had needed. “Good.” He murmured. “Did you get the camera? There’d be mass hysteria if the police got their hands on it.” Somehow he doubted that she’d had the opportunity when the whole area had been cordoned off, left for people to investigate. He wondered faintly if their claims of an animal attack would hold up when there were no paw prints or evidence that any animals had been there at all- just four sets of footprints, if any had even been left at all. Maybe it was better if things were left a mystery
As Fee noticed the look in his eyes at last, his confusion and pain and exhaustion a deadly combination that made him feel like bawling like a child, he leaned gently into her touch and sighed softly, eyes closed if only to stop her from seeing them shine with tears. The lights were still too bright, the harshness of hem painting his skin paler than it had been to start with. He imagined he looked just as terrible as he felt. “Stay. Please.” He implored her, grip tightening on her and a fleeting moment of panic surging through him. “Please don’t go. Just…sit and read to me, even if I fall asleep.”
Fee shook her head. No, she didn’t have the camera. It hadn’t been high up on her list of priorities. It still wasn’t. “Don’t worry about any of that shit right now,” she chided him, though her voice was hushed and soothing all the same. It wasn’t the end of matters, not by a long shot. Now he was awake, the police would no doubt want to question him and tie up the loose ends of their investigation. And while Fee was telling the truth when she said it had been likened to an animal attack, she wasn’t entirely off the hook. After all, it had been her knife Loki had used to cut his wrist that night, and while the rest of his injuries were inconsistent with the small blade, there was a lack of evidence and a lack of witnesses.
If it wasn’t an animal attack, the only one who had been there with him was Fee, covered from head to toe in his blood and trying desperately to staunch the flow of it. Her efforts to heal him using her magic had only served to make the wound seem less fresh, prompting yet more questions about why she’d waited in calling an ambulance. The interrogation had been more traumatic than she led Loki to believe. More so because she hadn’t even known if Loki would live or die…
But she said none of that, reticent as she often was when things were too difficult to discuss. Her smile didn’t quite reach her eyes, even as she endeavoured to act as though everything was fine.
“Sure,” she agreed, sounding calm when faced with his panic, though she was distant too. Sad. Guilty. She couldn’t refuse him when she felt such a huge amount of responsibility. She should never have confided in him about what she was. She should never have involved him. She should have turned him away the moment he showed an interest. Yet, there they were. And she knew in her heart, it couldn’t work. As much as she cared about him, a human had no place in her world; it was too dangerous, and his mortality had never been as apparent to her as it was now.
He could have died.
Twice over in the short time they’d known each other, he could have lost his life because of her.
But how could she express as much to him when he had risked his life as he had? She couldn’t. So she smiled and reached for her book, opening it and reading from where she’d left off last time.
After a while, one of the nurses reminded her of the time, and Fee smiled and asked for just five more minutes. The woman rolled her eyes but allowed them their privacy, Fee carefully moving off the bed and leaving the book she’d brought on the bedside table. Just in case Loki wanted to finish reading it while she wasn’t around.
“Goodnight, Loki,” she said quietly, leaning in as though to kiss him. She paused, though, lips hovering just shy of his before she seemed to reconsider. Instead, she kissed his forehead. “Don’t miss me too much.”
beautiful-mischief:
Even through the drowsy haze that he had been in since waking he was able to assume that Fee was likely to be his guest, exhaling a breathy laugh at how the beeping little monitor seemed to jump as his heart fluttered. Although he still ached, he knew it would be quite the relief to see her again- and that was putting things lightly. When he hadn’t known how things had played out in wake of their plan, he was anxious to know if Eden and Alana had caused any more trouble, even if the very thought of the vampire’s still filled him with dread.
He was itching to move right from when he heard the echo of two voices just down the corridor, a tired but incredibly fond smile unfurling across his lips as Fee emerged. Had he been able to stand up without toppling over he immediately would have sought out an embrace, a kiss even, but unfortunately he had a feeling that his exhausted body wouldn’t allow it. It was a relief to see that she was okay all the same, and his fingers twitched to intertwine themselves with hers as she perched on the edge of the bed. “Only barely.” He teased softly. “I’m still so tired, even if I’ve probably been like this for…days? I don’t know.” Loki certainly hoped it wasn’t much more than that. “I’m sorry.” He added, inching along to make more room for her, patting the spot right beside him. “Even if I don’t…entirely remember what happened, I never meant to make you worry.” Smile fading slightly, he tugged on her until she was close enough for him to slide an arm around her in a careful embrace, wondering why he suddenly felt choked up. Probably the medication again. At least he knew that he could still have her close without being afraid of her touch, particularly when it seemed to be the only thing capable of consoling him. “Fill me in, then.” He mused quietly. “I suppose everyone know that I’ve been holed up in here? How did you even explain all of this?”
Seven days. Twelve hours. Forty-five minutes.
But who was keeping track?
Fee’s smile never faltered, and though she could count the time that had passed since she’d called the ambulance, she chose to keep that knowledge to herself. “Medication’s making you all sappy,” she accused instead, though she indulged him all the same. She wanted the closeness just as much, even if she was determined to be mindful of his injuries lest the nurses chase her out. “That must mean they’ve given you the good stuff, hm?” She settled next to him, smile broadening as he carefully drew her closer still, a much needed embrace. Fee exhaled slowly, lashes fluttering as she turned into the hold, even if she was wary of leaning heavily into his side. Instead, she simply savoured where their bodies rested comfortably together, Loki a warm weight at her side on the cramped hospital bed.
“I didn’t really explain it,” Fee said after a moment, her voice distant as she thought back to that night. “I was shook up, covered in blood and… just… I couldn’t answer any of the questions. The whole area was cordoned off but when they looked at your injuries, they had to put it down to an animal attack. I mean, what else could do that, right?” She offered a wry smile, the two of them knowing full well. “Anyway, I haven’t seen Eden since then. Or his sister. So I dunno what’s happening with them, but they’ve certainly not been bothering me. And you’re the talk of the campus right now, obviously. I’m pretty sure your brother’s spreading rumours that you had a fist fight with a bear.” She laughed a little, though her expression soon softened when she saw just how choked up he was.
“Hey,” she said, whisper-soft. Her fingertips grazed his cheek and drew his gaze to hers very gently. “It’s okay. You’re okay. I mean, you lost a fuck ton of blood. I should know. I had to throw out everything I was wearing that night. I couldn’t… I couldn’t get it out.” There was a hitch in her throat, her gaze averting quickly. It still hurt to think back to the raw emotions of that night. She was grateful that he was alive, but so angry with herself for ever risking it. Ever since, she’d found herself wondering if it was selfish of her to be with Loki, drawing him into her world with all its threats. He couldn’t protect himself. She couldn’t protect him. Even though she wanted nothing more than to keep him safe. “Don’t feel bad if you need to kick me out, ‘kay? You need to rest, no matter how much you miss me.” Her lips curled at the corners, teasing. “Besides, I just got to this really good part in my book.” She gestured to the one she’d brought with her, sitting innocently at the foot of the bed. “And, actually, the whole regaining consciousness thing is kinda inconvenient for me right now~”
