Gang of Four’s debut album was released on 25 September 1979.

While the album received positive reviews (it was ranked #5 in NME’s “Albums of the Year”) and it sold well in the UK (peaking at #45), it failed to find an audience in the US.

“At Home He’s a Tourist” peaked at #58 in the UK, prompting an invitation to appear on Top of the Pops, however, when the band was asked to change a reference to “rubbers,” (substituting “rubbish”) the band refused and the appearance was cancelled.

Andy Gill and John King designed the album’s artwork.
